But as far as I can tell breaking your fast on fruit like in his video is pure BroScience (which cast into doubt if he was really medically supervised during the process). Actual experts on the subject like Dr. Fung and Dr. Berg seem to limit breaking fasts to greens and sometimes eggs, cheese and certain nuts.

Either vegetable broth or vegetable juice with a little fruit juice. Actually, watermelon is not a bad choice, as it is mostly water. I have read a dozen books on fasting and I have never seen eggs, cheese, or nuts mentioned as a way to break a fast. Cheese is notoriously difficult to digest.

Well this is in terms of electrolyte issues and refeeding syndrome, not upset stomachs. To me I think the nut thing is weird and even cheeses are high in saturated fats. Even on short fasts I only break on vegetables.

A steak is unlikely to kill you, it is just that most people do long-term fasts for health reasons and breaking a fast by immediately eating hard-to-digest foods is not healthy -- and can actually set you back. Your body's digestive fire needs some time to re-boot after a long-term fast. Slow and steady wins the race.

I did a 72 hour water fast a couple times to help cleanse my system, back when I ate like shit.

I'm in day 2. Already broke down and ate some yogurt and watery chichen soup. I've convinced myself that going all out water fast is undoable for me and I'm a guy not even working right now. I've decided to cheat by drinking yogurt and soup to kill hunger pangs. I doubt these calories will make a difference in my weight loss regimen. I used to do a low calorie diet for weight loss and as a unexpected consequence I cured my psoriasis.

Day two is often the worst day. By eating, you have guaranteed that your hunger will remain like a sharp pang instead of dissipating to a dull manageable ache. Whenever your hunger returns, simply go for a long walk, clean the house, or perform some other low energy activity to occupy your mind.

Yes, day 2 has three issues.

First is you are breaking your usual habits, like morning breakfast, which is distressing This issue is purely mental and should only affect you the very first time you fast.

Second, boredom because you are no longer getting the pleasure hit from eating. Dopamine withdrawal or whatever is a physiological reality, but it's no different from withdrawal from any other pleasurable activity, such as withdrawn from internet surfing. Just hang in there. Like others on this thread, I find boredom the most challenging aspect of fasting.

Three, for those people who eat a high carb diet and eat frequently, your body has to undergo a switchover from burning carbs to burning fat and this adaptation takes a while. I eat high carb but I only eat once a day, so my body is used to switching over daily and thus I have no problems with this switchover when fasting beyond my usual 23 hours. Until the adaptation occurs, you might have flu like feeling of headaches, weakness, nausea. The pain is physiological, not mental, but it will pass by day 4 at the latest. The worse the symptoms. the more your body needs to fast, because you are addicted to carbs.

I actually found out my symptoms went away after consuming 4,200mg of Potassium. I was using a dietary salt (50% potassium 50% sodium) because I couldn't find the no salt brands that Americans seem to have (like Morten's and NoSalt).

I was worried "what if I kill myself taking that much?" and the snake juice recipe taste like complete dogshit. It taste like going out to the actual ocean and drinking straight from there.

Turns out that much Potassium is fine and removes most of the negative symptoms of water fasting (headaches and the stomach pangs).

Thing is I still broke mine after 48 hours because I got bored (but not hungry). I'm a person who stress eats and eats out of boredom.

I'm planning to do the 3-day water fast. This is my first time doing it. I understand that you must start with 1-day water fast. Is there anything I need to expect during fasting? Like, will I feel dizzy or the like?

Typical rookie question. Read the entire thread first. Then ask questions (if they have not already been answered).

I'm doing a 3 day fast starting today. Goal is to shed a bit of fat, so, to cannibalize myself just a little bit.

I'm halfway through the first day. I've done one day fasts before, they're no biggie, but I've never done a three day fast.

This is a water only fast.

Oh, and weighed myself at 176.8 pounds yesterday morning, nude, on an empty stomach. Then ate normally yesterday, but a bit cleaner than usual due to having a cough (meat and bone marrow, plus mangoes and walnuts). Let's see what weight I can hit on the third morning from now.

Will report back.

How much actual weight did you lose during those 3 days? Were you able to keep it off?

Typically, you can lose 1-2 pounds a day. My average has been about 1-1/2 pounds. During my 14-day water-only fast, I went from 173 pounds to a temporary low on the last day of 153 pounds (my lowest weight since high school).

Keeping weight off depends entirely on your self-control and your ability to eat healthy. If you eat garbage (or even an abundance of healthy high-calorie foods, such as nuts), then the weight will obviously come back very quick.

A typical male stores about 500g glycogen in the muscles and liver, and there are 3g water for every gram of stored glycogen. So that's 2kg (4.4 lb) that gets burned off initially during a fast and then immediately returns as soon as you resume eating.

Variations in glycogen and associated water are why your weight can vary so much over the course of the day, and why it drops so rapidly at the beginning of a fast.

I'm on day 7 of yoghurt + watery chicken soup diet. Not sure I would make it this far just with water. Noticeable loss in weight I'm happy with.

That does not make any sense on two fronts. First, the longer that you fast, the more weight that you will lose. There is no 4.4 pound cap. After you burn all your available carbs, you will convert to burning stored fat (although this does not happen until approximately day three for men).

Second, if you eight well after a fast (e.g., a diet of 70% to 80% raw organic fruits and vegetables) the weight will stay off. If you are on a long fast, about 1/4 to 1/2 of the weight will come back very quick, but the remainder will say off (if you eat healthy).

@TailGunner: We're not in conflict, you are mis-reading my initial post. Of course there is no cap on weight loss. And lost fat remains lost if you don't overeat after the fast. But glycogen reserves and associated water (about 4-5 lbs for a typical man) bounces back immediately.

I was at 171.4 this morning, nude, same time I usually weigh myself.

So about 5 pounds lost. I didn't do the 3 day fast, I got a virus and decided to eat for health reasons, but ate light. Then I've been eating either normal or fast/semi fast in the days after.

This is great. Doesn't even feel like dieting and I'm not hungry. What happens is if I'm on a day when my goal is fasting, even if I fail, I end up eating smaller and healthier meals than usual, so it still moves me towards the goal.

Goal's still 168.

Highly recommend.

There is a free fasting educational summit from January 14th-20th. All you need to do is provide an email address and then every day you will receive free educational videos on the topic of fasting. Typically, you must watch the free videos within 24 hours. When you sign up, you will receive three early bonus videos that you can immediately watch. I am not affiliated in any way.

Guys I am on my 8th day of a water fast. The first three days were a dry one. I am taking it one day at a time and am allowing myself to stop anytime I want.

My plan was to do ten days but lets see I may go longer this time.

I don't like to post anything until after I finish bc it puts pressure on you. And putting pressure on yourself is a sure way to quit early.

But I feel good --- no hunger at all. Instead it feels like my stomach is full of old food.

I am trying to do two ten day fasts in a year as a nice way to cleanse out.

Lets see how it goes.

Wishing you guys all the best and good health.

And will definitely check out your vids TG.

After my above post my fast went into a rough period. I knew it was a mistake writing about my fast before actually completing.

Until the 8th day it was going quite well and easy. So perhaps I got over confident. Only two days left - how hard can that be? After all the hardest part of the fast has been done.

Then started the terrible insomnia. No sleep at all. Just watching the clock tick and hunger pains starting.

On the 9th day I decided to quit.

But later I convinced myself to keep going.

Just dam well stick it out.

Day ten finally arrived and it seemed like 5 days of waiting. Then again insomnia -- watching the clock.

Finally at 3 am in the morning I got up and broke the fast. So officially for me it was 10 full days of water only fasting.

I was hoping to go more - up to 14 days. But not this time. Maybe the next one in hopefully September.

But 10 days is still quite good.

This is my third time now doing a 10 day water only fast -- and overall it does get more easy to do. This time only the last two day were hard but the first eight days were fairly easy.

I am going to Rio de Janiero for all of April. Will continue my Monday fasts of course and get in some amazing shape by going daily to the beaches and to the gym.

A fasting life style once it becomes a habit is brings one a lot of happiness. It is hard to put in words. It is difficult in the beginning though. After easy.

I may try a 14 day water only fast in the summer. That is the plan.

Also TG, the free fasting educational summit you posted was quite good. I learned a good amount. Many thanks. Make sure you post more information like that.

I just completed a 14 day water fast and it was life-changing for me. I had only done a few 3 day ones before, but the benefits cannot match what I experienced on this 14 day one. (Extended) Fasting has great physical benefits like fixing hyperinsulemia, autophagy, lowering body fat, regenerating the immune system, boosting stem cell production, but the spiritual benefits are where it's at for me. I will go back to fasting 24 hours every day, working out in a fasted state, and eating all of my calories in a 2 hour window and attempt a 3 week one in 3 months. I lost 15 kg on this fast, which at least half was water, but I will never stop fasting. It is a purifying experience. Feast and fast -- just like our ancestors had been doing for thousands of years.

Interesting thread, I am only at page 3.

Simple questions:
1. just water for 21 days?? Or is it like muslims do and you eat after the sunset. That’s a serious question, I can hardly imagine how you can stay healthy with 0 food for more than 3-4 days.

2. How do you deal with hunger?
3. Does « water only fasting » have only benefits on internal health ? Can it have a positive impact on cartilage and ligaments injuries? My guess is no.

This thread has already answered your questions and more questions which you will likely ask. So just do a bit of reading.

Just quickly, water only means water only. Extended fasting gets a lot more easy after the third day especially. Your cravings and hunger starts to shut down.

The biggest challenge with extended fasting believe it or not is the boredom you experience -- just watching the clock tick away. You best deal with this by having a good routine and plan on what to do with your time.

Also I find fasting does initially help injuries. I had a back injury which compelled me to do my first ten day water only fast -- after the fast my back was back to normal. Without that injury I may never have attempted my ten day fast.

Cartilage and ligaments injuries will also benefit as fasting reduces inflammation. It may not heal but it will help -- a lot likely.

The only thing I would add it not to over do fasting -- bc you cannot beat a good food intake and exercise program.

We did not even yet discuss the mental and spiritual benefits of extended fasting.
