Eastern Europe Jan. to March. Terrible Idea?
12-04-2017, 02:13 AM
Hi everyone,
I'm thinking of eastern europe in January but I'm concerned about the coldness of the weather. I'm from a country that is warm all year round pretty much and I've never experienced less than 10oC for more than probably 10 minutes in my whole life.
Is this a terrible idea? Will it be miserably cold? Will the girls all be at home, sheltering from the cold, and not out?

I love cold weather - so EE in the Winter for me is perfect.
If you're not used to it, maybe avoid it.

The polish flag next to my username is an error. I’m in the island sized castration camp: the land with nothing down under. And even though the weather here is perfect atm, it’s so awful in other ways, that I’m seriously thinking of skipping summer and spending a few months in colder weather than I’ve ever experienced.

Nightlife is actually vibrant in January, and the malls aren't empty during the day. So if you feel clubbing and malls can make for a great stay, then you'll enjoy it. The forecast (for what it's worth) shows mostly above zero for January so it's that cold anyway.

Really the only negative I've experienced in Russia as an Australian in the Winter is that you can't just "do things outside". For me the hardest part is the exercise and not being able to run, cycle or just go to a park and do a bodyweight session. You've got to get to a gym or indoor centre to do anything basically.
That and learning to walk on snow and ice covered ground is a fucking ordeal but you get there eventually.
Honestly I don't actually find it terribly cold either but I've never been one to feel the cold.

Did you have to change your whole wardrobe? I'm worried basically everything I own will be inadequate.
I'm going to get the following:
- Woolen long johns
- Battery heated jacket
- Woolen beenie hat
- Leather boots
- Lined leather gloves
Will that be enough?

Bring what you already have with you and then buy more clothes when you get there... you are likely to find more variety and more appropriate clothes in your destination. Probably will be cheaper as well.

Théo juste focus on layering. Thermal underpants should be enough with any normal jeans or pants. On top make sure you have a suitable coat then you can wear your normal Blazer and shirt under it. I wouldn't wear a thermal undershirt when going to the club as it tends to be normal hot inside and that can bother you.
The most important piece is the coat.

Thanks for the replies.
I am missing a good coat. These are very hard to find in Castralia. Should I leave off buying this until reaching eastern europe? I can get one online here potentially.

It's a completely different place from winter to summer.
I'm here now and I prefer it 10x to being at home, but yeah the cold sucks. It's cold where I'm from too, so fuck it.
I got a really dope jacket here for $100 that would have cost twice that at home, btw.

It's really not that bad once you get used to it. And if you can afford places in the city centers... you never really have to go that far for nightlife or shopping, etc. The eastern europeans are used to it so they stay out all weather drinking. Not unheard of to see them out in a park drinking in 0 or below weather as long as it's not too windy. Biggest thing you need are some sturdy boots and a good coat. Hope that helps.

What do you mean by Eastern Europe? Do you mean Slovakia, Hungary or something or little up like Lithuania, Estonia?
Because if you go to Estonia or something, it will be usually -5 or 0.
If you go to Hungary or something, it's gonna be maximum +5

Good point, technically Odessa is Eastern Europe and the temp there is very different.
I’m thinking about Warsaw here primarily.

Expect some weather that goes below 0 c, my man.
I've seen -22 on Christmas eve last year there. I was shocked when I looked at my iPhone, weather app.

-20oC? Crikey. Maybe they’ll find me in a thousand years burried in ice.

Coldest I have been was -22 (celsius) in Warsaw in January 2014, and -24 in Kiev in February 2015. Cold as fuck, but clubs packed...life goes on in EE.
Warsaw was worse, very windy. Though just a matter of putting clothes on, and dont stay too long in the street.

Yes but it was at night, around like 1 am. My friend told me to check my iPhone to see the weather outside, it was -22 c.
I never ever seen that shit before.

Yes, he's over-reacting. It's basically same weather with Boston or New York City.

haha mate it isn't Antarctica. If you want a nice jacket just get a North Face down jacket, or something like the Eddie Bauer Stormdown that's what I got.
Americans are always easy to spot here in Eastern Europe, always dressed like hikers with North Face jackets even when they're just doing a little mincing around a market square. Also they wear scruffy jeans(chiefly Levis) that not even a Gopnik would be seen dead in.

Coldest I have been in Ukraine was -29 back in 2013, when you got below -20 or so you walk outside and the cold instantly makes the hairs in your nose stand on end.

As soon as you arrive in country, buy a heavy coat and some boots. Also a scarf and wool hat and some gloves. As you say yourself OP, there's more to life than "nice" weather.
