Arnold Palmer, 1929-2016

Arnold Palmer was a great golfer and an even better man. He won and lost with pride and class. He was perfect for the sport, just as television arrived on the scene. And he was still much loved in Western Pennsylvania.

Here's a tribute from Pittsburgh station, WTAE:

I met him at a sports event in NYC about 10 years ago. There were many athletes there -- everyone was so excited to meet him. He was so friendly and polite to everybody even the event staff. RIP

I was born in Pittsburgh. It is amazing how many greats from the world of sports that have come from that slice of SW PA. Not only that but Arnie was a real man from another space and time. Guys like him are irreplaceable, but if we look to them and learn we are all the better for it.

Arnold also graduated from Latrobe High School one year after Fred Rogers.

Arnold made a lot of money with endorsements that had nothing to do with golf, too. Here is one of many Pennzoil commercials:

RIP.

Love the game and he was one of the greatest ambassadors.

While Tiger was a golf cyborg at his peak and admired for his skills, his personality less so.

Can't fake Arnold's sincerity. Wish I had the chance to shake his hand.

RIP the King. Could go on, but nothing more to say about this great man.

I've always made a total effort, even when the odds seemed entirely against me. I never quit trying; I never felt that I didn't have a chance to win.-AP

Sad to see Arnie go. He was one of the true legends of his sport, and a class act.

A few years back there was a very short documentary that captured his life and career really well --
