So I started playing guitar back in the days of grunge, circa 1993 or so. I practiced several hours a day every day for years, and got pretty good, but after college life got more hectic, I suffered from a chronic illness for several years, and it slipped by the wayside.
I also picked up a little piano; I took some music theory classes in college and it was a requirement, but I'm not particularly good.
In the past year I've picked up playing again and even after years of disuse the muscle memory is still there. I'm probably back to about 70% of the skill I had when I stopped practicing seriously in the early 2000s.
I own a few synthesizers and some recording equipment (compressors, audio interfaces, a nice mic preamp, hard disk recorder) that I muck with occasionally, but it's often hard to find the time to do anything serious with it.
I'm looking to hear experiences from anyone with similar skill, whether they were able to leverage their talent to help their game in their mid 30s. What did you do? Form a local band and play out? Busk near colleges/universities? Open a small-time recording studio? Post cover songs or original material on YT/FB and try to acquire a cult following? Release a self-produced electrofunk album?
All ideas are welcome
