I agree with her in principle about doing things outside your job, which is why I'm self employed. However, I'm saving up money and structuring my law practice so that I can take a year off. This lady expects her job to hand her paid time off to eat pray fuck.

What this writer doesn't realize is they used to have that. It was called being a housewife.

If a company provides 6 months of paid maternity leave to a new mother, it should also provide the same benefit to me so that I can fly to Poland or just sit on my ass and drink beer.

This may come as a shock to you (believe me, it did to me too) but the USA is one of only 2 countries on the entire planet that does not offer some form of paid maternity leave. Yes, even those seemingly dirt poor third world countries - their governments offer paid benefits to their citizens who have newborn children.

I fully endorse maternity benefits - it's unrealistic to think a new mother can go back to work full time the day after giving birth to a newborn baby. Caring for a newborn is a 24-hour job for the first several weeks the baby enters the world. It wakes up every hour needing food, changing, comfort, etc. They also have very vulnerable immune systems after birth and require constant monitoring.

That said, this is yet another reason for the "wage gap" - women have babies and take time off costing themselves opportunity for career advancement and costing their employer money.

Goddamn. Women make babies and care for them, and men go off gather resources and provide for the family. Why is this shit so backwards and difficult?

Yup. I figure the maternity benefit is an instinctive recognition that children are the future, and so that the population can grow, and replace valuable members so that they can resist foreign invasion rather than import gazillions of immigrants to keep things afloat (whoops). Even in ancient times the tribe would rally round mothers of newborns to provide support in a primitive form of maternity benefit. If you haven't had kids yet you won't fully appreciate the care that's required. It's like subsidised healthcare, really: some use it a lot, some don't. Can't really micromanage that sort of thing so everyone contributes.

But yeah, 'meternity'...more solipsism from worthless idiots. "Reflect on their lives" (caption underneath cat lady) = check social media 24/7 for validation that their lives aren't wasted by not fulfilling their biological imperative.

Childless women who are 6/10 and above should be allowed 'meternity' leave - to get knocked up. Six months to get preggers or you're back in that cubicle until you die. 5's and under can go to the newbie forum for practice or something. Either that or Soylent Green.
