Adverse reactions from vitamins and supplements

I noticed a few months back that if I took up to 5 vitamins in the morning at 1 time, I would either sneeze or worse, throw up. This was reproducible and was put over the top by a large calcium pill. Currently, I take herbals and vitamins in powder form. Last night after I had taken AAKG and creatine before my workout (with tongkat) I was fine. Came home, ate then took Mg, Zinc & grapefruit seed extract --- all in powder form. Maybe an Arginine capsule too.

I fall asleep, wake up in 20 minutes and my intestines are feeling crampy with some nausea but not stomach symptoms. I know because ironically, I'm a physician. I dry heave and then induce vomiting, something comes up, but no real relief. 30 more minutes and it starts to go away. I'm thinking ileus (blockage) or stunned small bowel for whatever reason but it's totally odd.

Ever heard of this? Sorry for the long message.

Never heard of this before.

Quit all supplements and start using just one for a week. Every passing week add another and monitor what happens. When it starts again you should be able to pinpoint the supplement causing you to throw up.

Mind you it might be a combination of certain supps but you can test just that by doing the same weekly regimen starting with only the supplement that causes you to vomit. If you don't feel sick, it's a combination.

Also, it might be a reaction to something in your daily diet.

Adverse reactions from vitamins and supplements

The only time I've ever had any issues is on an empty stomach. Some vitamins and supplements make me nauseous if I haven't eaten before taking them. I normally don't eat breakfast so now I only take vitamins and supplements in the evening after dinner. I've had no problems since switching to evening intake.

I had problems with nausea for a while after taking a multivitamin and it turned out to be the large amount of B vitamins in the cheap multi I was getting from Walmart. A switch to a higher quality version solved the problem.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm pretty sure it had more to do with the chard and kale I ate raw those 2 days... gut flora was challenged. Interesting learning experience.

Yes!

I have seen many people getting victim of an adverse effects of different supplements. There are many dietary supplements available in the market but most of them contain harmful chemicals which are not at all good for our body. One of my friend had suffered a lot because of this. Later she came to know that there are no nuez de india side effects and she stared taking this. She was trying to lose her weight and it got possible by using the same.

Re calcium: my endo / antiaging doc says men should never take calcium supplements because it has a demonstrated calcifying effect on the arteries and studies have shown it markedly decreases male life span.

Also, the vitamins we take should be tailored to our specific needs, and that can only be determined after blood work. This actually saved me money because now have cut my intake dramatically and only take 3 different supplements vs over ten in the past.

Also, one of the things the antiaging community is getting excited about are "ionic sea minerals" or ionic trace minerals. I apparently had some trade deficiency and when I started taking it my grey hairs disappeared. See http://www.max-well.us/Ionic%20Sea%20M.asp for my favorite brand.

I feel your pain, I've never been able to take Zinc supplements of any kind without getting very nauseous.

Finally gave up and decided that because I eat so many Oysters, Pumpkin Seeds & Red Meat - my body was trying to tell me it didn't need anymore Zinc.

I have two to report:

Zinc Oxide (Some crappy pharmacy house brand gave me awful headaches. Now I only use Optizinc, no problems.)
Grapefruit Juice Extract:

It can interact in nasty ways with certain meds, so make sure you aren't taking anything else that could cause problems with it.

My first time taking zinc made me hurl because it was on an empty stomach and I took too many. Plus it was generic cheap zinc instead of Optizinc which does seem to help a bunch with nausea. Spacing your vitamins out helps too, zinc and magnesium both help you sleep so I take them before bed.

@DJ-Matt,

Yes, Zinc should always be taken with a meal. Still, Optizinc is certainly a superior formula than generic cheap zincs which can cause stomach problems, headaches, etc. especially when taken in large dosages.

Amazing, dude

I actually took zinc (citrate, powder form) and grapefruit seed extract that night ... it definitely was the zinc, not helped by the grapefruit ... it was NOT the greens
