Adverse reactions from vitamins and supplements
03-18-2016, 10:47 AM
I noticed a few months back that if I took up to 5 vitamins in the morning at 1 time, I would either sneeze or worse, throw up. This was reproducible and was put over the top by a large calcium pill. Currently, I take herbals and vitamins in powder form. Last night after I had taken AAKG and creatine before my workout (with tongkat) I was fine. Came home, ate then took Mg, Zinc & grapefruit seed extract --- all in powder form. Maybe an Arginine capsule too.
I fall asleep, wake up in 20 minutes and my intestines are feeling crampy with some nausea but not stomach symptoms. I know because ironically, I'm a physician. I dry heave and then induce vomiting, something comes up, but no real relief. 30 more minutes and it starts to go away. I'm thinking ileus (blockage) or stunned small bowel for whatever reason but it's totally odd.
Ever heard of this? Sorry for the long message.

Never heard of this before.
Quit all supplements and start using just one for a week. Every passing week add another and monitor what happens. When it starts again you should be able to pinpoint the supplement causing you to throw up.
Mind you it might be a combination of certain supps but you can test just that by doing the same weekly regimen starting with only the supplement that causes you to vomit. If you don't feel sick, it's a combination.
Also, it might be a reaction to something in your daily diet.

The only time I've ever had any issues is on an empty stomach. Some vitamins and supplements make me nauseous if I haven't eaten before taking them. I normally don't eat breakfast so now I only take vitamins and supplements in the evening after dinner. I've had no problems since switching to evening intake.

I had problems with nausea for a while after taking a multivitamin and it turned out to be the large amount of B vitamins in the cheap multi I was getting from Walmart. A switch to a higher quality version solved the problem.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm pretty sure it had more to do with the chard and kale I ate raw those 2 days... gut flora was challenged. Interesting learning experience.

I feel your pain, I've never been able to take Zinc supplements of any kind without getting very nauseous.
Finally gave up and decided that because I eat so many Oysters, Pumpkin Seeds & Red Meat - my body was trying to tell me it didn't need anymore Zinc.

My first time taking zinc made me hurl because it was on an empty stomach and I took too many. Plus it was generic cheap zinc instead of Optizinc which does seem to help a bunch with nausea. Spacing your vitamins out helps too, zinc and magnesium both help you sleep so I take them before bed.

@DJ-Matt,
Yes, Zinc should always be taken with a meal. Still, Optizinc is certainly a superior formula than generic cheap zincs which can cause stomach problems, headaches, etc. especially when taken in large dosages.
