No love for baseball on RvF? Not alpha enough?

My 2nd favorite team sport after Soccer. Very interesting season as all teams seem to be pretty evenly matched.

I believe a Cardinals-Tigers world series will occur.

Are you going to any of the games at Yankee stadium this weekend? I want to attend the follow-up subway series in September. I'm a Yankees fan, but I'm curious to check out Citi Field. Shea was quite a dump.

I'm a Giants fan and as much as this hurts me to say I think if anything they have regressed from last year and have already caught the injury bug. It's an " odd" numbered year so I may as well write them off this year.
The NL West should be fun to watch with the Padres improving, the Giants coming off a 3rd World Series Championship in 5 years, the Dodgers being the Dodgers, and the Rockies solid start. We will have to wait and see come October.

It seems like MLB players get married younger and start families earlier compared to NBA and NFL players, maybe due to more "whitebread" types. It would be interesting to see which major American sport pulls the most women.

Baseball is a pretty American sport, and this forum, while having American roots, also has a lot of members from Canada and Europe.

On a more personal note, I'm loving the Mets right now. I know it's early in the season, but after 6 years of looking absolutely awful all season long, this is promising.

No athlete was running fame game like Jeter in the US in the last 20 years.

Now he's 40 and getting married to a 24 year old (Hannah davis) after smashing all sorts of lizards and never being stupid and marrying any of them when he was playing.

A lot of the reasons Rock states are why I like baseball.

Rock also doesn't tell the whole truth of why blacks don't play baseball anymore. Baseball in the US, more than any other sport, is transmitted from father to son.

Fatherlessness in the black community is a lot higher than it was in the 50's and 60's.

I do think you'll see more blacks coming back into the game as their parents stop them from playing football due to injury risk.

Nah not this weekend. But maybe in the future I'd go to CitiField.

I'm a Yankees fan but I have no problem watching the Mets. Never saw a reason for the hate. But of course in the Subway Series I'm pulling for the Yanks.

I do, however, HATE the Red Sox as any NY fan should.

I started being a baseball fan about 5 years ago. My interest has not been as high the last few years as that first year, but this year, I've been looking forward to the season for months. I've watched a few games already, and really got into it.

I watched The Natural the other day for the first time, and I noticed how it creates a nostalgic idealism about the game, even thought there is corrupt management in the storyline. I think that one of the reasons I like baseball is that is somehow still remains pure, and harkens back to the good old days.

I'm extremely disappointed in the way America has changed from the time I was growing up. I feel like the country I was raised in and the values I absorbed are gone. Maybe baseball is a little sliver of Americana that still lives on.

Roastbeef - check out 'Bull Durham', it's a fucking great movie about the minor leagues.

Chris Rock was talking about how theres so few black baseball fans anymore because baseball is too boring and doesn't 'adapt' to modern times.
But that's what makes it great it's more like chess instead of instant gratification.

The NBA fucking plays music DURING the game, it's like the audience is so stupid they need constant noise and gratification to stay focused. NFL players celebrate like retards over routine tackles like it's a big deal. They didnt do that in the old days.

I hope baseball stays true, it doesn't need to 'adapt' to the millennial crowd. I was against baseball adopting instant replay as well.

I've seen a number of baseball movies over the years, but I had never seen the Natural, and I still haven't seen Bull Durham. I'll check it out for sure.

One of the things I like about baseball is its relaxed pace. It's a mellow summer game. Even when the competition is fierce, the players often look relaxed, and that's just how I like it. Somehow it's soothing, but it can be exciting too, like when a big play happens, or when the lead is trading back and forth between teams.

I think a lot of baseball's general appeal is its nostalgia. Many ballparks now have a retro style, which I love. Even though the look has changed a little from the old days, I find that the game still is pretty pure as far as remaining nearly unchanged from decades ago. The changes are subtle, but the essence of the game is the same.

I'm a massive baseball fan that resists change to the game, but not can't agree with you there. Instant replay is amazing, so is all the f/x data, statcast, trackman, etc.

If I were commissioner, I would push for automating the strike zone.

I went to CitiField the other day because my father got two tickets and wanted to see it. That was the Mets' 11th win in a row before losing to the Yankees yesterday. I actually think the layout is friendlier to the fans seating wise, but Yankee Stadium has more to do. It's still early on so we'll see what happens down the line, but both teams look good this year. If the Mets can have another streak they should already be guaranteed a shot at the playoffs.

Sounds stupid this early? A few years ago the Rays lost 10 games in a row in April but were a good team afterwards. Nevertheless, those 10 losses came back to haunt them and killed their chances to get into the playoffs that year. The level of competition these days is so great that streaks like that, even so early on, are very important.

It's all good. The run was going to come to an end anyway. Time to start another streak today.

Harvey is filthy.

Best 5 pitchers in baseball IMO based on stuff: Kershaw, Harvey, Fernandez, Sale, Felix with Darvish & Kluber as honorable mentions.

This isn't a measure of effectiveness though, which is a completely different argument.

Floor - instant replay is mostly ineffective bullshit which slows the game down.

Look what it's done to the NFL - routine catches are overturned all the time. It's become a sideshow. Now a receiver has to catch a pass, fall out of bounds then fucking worry if they roll 2 or 3 times if the ball nudges the ground a little bit they say it's 'incomplete' its completely stupid.
There are many types of plays which can't even be reviewed, which defeats the purpose of having replay in the first place.

The human element is what makes sports fun. If you had robot umpires there would never be a coach arguing a call again, thatd remove the character of the game. Theres enough electronic shit in daily life, the great thing about sports is it brings us back to feats of human capability. If you start installing electronic shit everywhere on the field that just ruins it IMO.

Otherwise you might as well make robots to play the game. NFL has become dumbed to the common entertainment donominator. Katie Perry riding an animatronic tiger at halftime? give me a break. I hope MLB doesn't push technology and mindless entertainment the way NFL has.

MLB's instant replay has been very effective and major league games are going faster this year despite the implementation, and it feels like I'm watching the same amount of baseball but with less commercial time and stalling due to the new rules in place this year. It's decidedly a very different presentation than the NFL, so I'm not worried at this time that MLB will go down that route.

The Mets doing so well is a bit of a shock but they've been building up to this team for awhile. While I'm surprised it's coming together this year, it was inevitable to happen within this decade. I'm hoping the Nationals can turn themselves around by the time they play another series with the Mets. I love pitching duels, and while no one is listing the Nats' pitchers in the top 5 rankings, I think they have the best starting rotation once they get settled into the season.

Before the Expos turned into the Nationals and gave me a team I could easily see live, I was a Braves fan and it's nice seeing them rebuild too. I figure they'll be a top contender again by 2020.

I hate the new home plate rules more than I hate instant replay. It doesn't slow the game down that much. I watch the Mets everyday, and most of the games are done before 10PM (under 3 hours). Even last year the games weren't ending until 10:15-10:30. I'd rather they get it right than have a game blown because of a bad call.

Instant replay has been mostly a success. At the game I was at the other day there was a close call at the plate that lasted for four minutes, but the other replays were pretty fast. I think it could be sped up if you allow the umpires to view the replay themselves instead of having to call into MLB headquarters but for the most part it's handled well.

The NFL is pretty much designed around commercials and designed to be slow. That's one of the reasons why I detest it. Out of 3+ hours you get maybe 8 minutes where the ball is in play. The rest of the time is spent on replays, walking around the field/waiting for the next play, and of course the commercials.

MLB handles their spectators very well all things considered since the game by nature is going to be a bit slow.

16 year old French girl eligible to be signed by MLB teams

http://m.mlb.com/news/article/132044338/...e-sign-mlb

It would he a non story except for the way other media sources aside from MLB.com have blown it out of proproportion.

Jezebel headline- Melissa Mayaux badass French teen can be first woman signed by MLB team

NY Daily News Headline- Could a female make it in MLB? French teen Melissa Mayeux lands on international registration list

Frankly she's remarkably adequate and replaceable by American standards.. You go to any high school or legion field in the US and 75% of players will be better than her. More than anything it's a testament to how insignificant and pathetic the state of baseball is in France and Europe that she is considered a "top prospect". This'll go right down with midget Eddie Gaedel soon enough hopefully.

Watch out for those Oakland A's, climbing out of the cellar, 9/11, Sonny Gray is raw.

The A's are just grooming him for a fire sale... They need prospects after last years all or nothing implosion.

Honestly I want Baltimore to trade for him.... I'd give up Kevin Gausman and Dylan Bundy for it

Time to revitalize this thread.

So the trade deadline has come and gone, and contenders are looking a lot different now.

Blue Jays add Tulowitzki and Price (throwing away their future in the process).

Royals add Cueto and Zobrist.

Astros add Gomez, Kazmir, and Fiers.

Mets add Cespedes, Cards add Moss, Pirates add Ramirez, Happ, Morse (lose Tabata).

Lots of retooling going around. The Blue Jays probably improved the most, but (I think) still won't be enough to get them over the hump with their dreadful bullpen and mediocre 2-5 starters.

Should be a good last two months of the season. Thoughts?
