The political manoeuvring is so transparent it beggars belief

I can't speak for the American side of the equation, but here in the UK our Parliament was certainly deceived by false claims in 2003 to garter support for the invasion of Iraq.
The phrase '45 minutes' was relentlessly shoehorned into every discussion so as to give the appearance of warranted self-defense. But we all know how the WMD argument panned out.
And now that private communications between the former PM and President are under scrutiny, delay after delay has presented itself.
The fact that this issue is being kicked into the long grass until after the next general election just reeks on so many levels.
The sad part is that nothing's going to be done about it. Everybody's too busy checking their facebook pages.

The long-awaited Chilcot inquiry into the Iraq war will not be published until after the general election in May, it has emerged.
The inquiry chairman, Sir John Chilcot, will set out his reasons for the further delay in an exchange of letters with Prime Minister David Cameron, according to Government sources.
It is understood that Mr Cameron has written to Sir John saying that while he would have liked to have seen the report released before the election in May, he accepted that publication was a matter for the inquiry.
Bernard Jenkin, chair of the Public Administration Select Committee, told The Telegraph that the news was a "disappointment" and he urged the Cabinet Secretary to give an explanation for the delay.
The Chilcot inquiry, which was originally set up by the then prime minister Gordon Brown in 2009, took public evidence from its last witness in 2011.
However publication of the report has been held back by negotiations over the publication of private communications between Tony Blair, prime minister at the time of the 2003 conflict, and then US president George Bush.
