Florianopolis datasheet

Trip Length: 3 months
About me: I'm six foot one, weigh about 165 now (was around 170-175 then went catabolic), lean muscle build, dark short hair, brown eyes, tan, latino, 21. Just started to run game regularly about a year ago but still suffer from oneitis occasionally; i stray from alpha mentality every now and then. My rotation tends to max out at 3 or 4, by this i mean girls that i text regularly and we have a mutual interest in each other. I usually am able to hold 2 girls that are very interested in me and have them come over to my place during the week (or am able to go over their place). I feel more comfortable with day gaming, but still do decent at clubs.

The island: A beautiful and scenic place, the natural beauty on that island is breath taking. Beaches are nice. Joaquina is by far my favorite the waves are decent for surfing and not too overwhelming that you cant go out to the water for a nice time. The infrastructure in the island is by far one of the worst things about it. The bus system also sucks. I would recommend renting a car, they are very cheap to do so and did it a couple of times during the weekends to travel around the island and some places off it. The restaurant service varies but is usually subpar. Good places to eat are the very north at praia dos inglesses and at the south in ribereao da ilha. The best thing to look forward to when eating out is the sea food (best and biggest oysters I’ve ever had). The cost of living is quite high compared to the rest of the country and taxi costs add up quick. For a short stay I would recommend somewhere north of the island if you have the money to party with their wealthy in Jurere. If not Lagoa and Centro are nice places. Needless to say (atleast I hope) you should probably focus on logistics when picking a place to stay. By that I mean if you got serious game and want to get with a dime that thinks shes at the same level as Alessandra then you should probably stay near Jurere or in a nice place at Centro. Most people you see out will come from money. Not a big shock because the island is the playground for rich people that live in sao paolo, rio, Brasilia, and the occasional European guys. To get a more authentic Brazil experience I would not go to this island. The island has a lot of decent hikes that are short and lead to secluded beaches. If you truly love to travel and stare at nature for long periods of times I would definitely recommend. All the decent ones are on tripadvisor (the islands population goes from 400k to 1.2 million during their summer about December- march/april) which makes the whole thing immobile. The roads are not build for those kind of numbers.

The nightlife and night game: Fun with friends or someone who you have been spitting game to throughout the week. I experienced the Island during low season so I think I got the best experience in terms of getting to know how these people really are. There are a lot good places to party on the island surprisingly is pretty diverse in terms of music taste. Good places to go to in Lagoa for Brazilian music is Casa de Noca the music will vary throughout the weekend but overall a nice venue (small) but the people that go are the friendliest I’ve seen. Mustafa Lounge is kind of nice too if you like reggae. The big clubs in Centro are pretty much overrun by house music. Finding a party is not hard at all. *Kind of relevant side note. Before I forget, if you go on a Tuesday and can dance or atleast are willing to try Forro do Joaquina is also really good, easy to meet regular girls and have fun. What worked for me in heavy oriented places to dance was talking to the once that were on the periphery of the club and then when the conversation slowed down or I started to lose interest I would simply grab the girls hand (I’d make sure it seems natural-ish haha) and say “teach me” even if she said she wasn’t good or she couldn’t I’d say have fun or “let’s just have fun”.* The problem with the nightlife in Floripa is that finding a girl that has interest in you is fucking hard. I would flat out say it, there is no point in sugar coating it, these girls are cliquish and nothing about being foreign except for, say, being blonde and blue eyed will wow them. They are brain washed to love that. I don’t expect them to be wowed at me being foreign but if throw a question like “where are you from?” and the girl answers but doesn’t give a fuck why my Portuguese has an accent and doesn’t ask where I’m from I find that beyond me. That being said if it felt like I was pulling teeth and couldn’t get this girl interested in me I moved on. Most of them have been to America and Europe. The good thing is that they are quick to tell you not to waste your time, close to the last week of my stay I got blown off so fast I was both amazed and dumbfounded. Which reminds me, don’t go to the Black Swan. The girls are hot but its mainly packed with uptight bishes, got terrible vibes from these girls. Tried it twice both times didn’t like it. Music both times was soft rock with a live band. The cover fee also sucks. I would also recommend practicing Portuguese before going they actually liked when I spoke it. Many times I got positive reactions from girls that were amazed by mine.

Day gaming: Easily what worked best for me. I talked to some guys and they say is not common to randomly walk up to a girl and start talking to her. I took this as a huge green light. I come off casually and if I notice a pretty girl walking I catch up and simply say hi and smile and begin from there. Note I’m a student and only went after girls in the very early 20 range haha. So I’m not sure about older chicks. But I’m sure at worst they will be flattered (one girl could not stop smiling at me). Each approach I do is sort of a mini interview. I have a very good success rate with this. Something like 2/3 girls or 3/5, I define success as having a girl noticeably interested and me getting her number. I make the conversations last about 8-12 minutes which gives me enough time to get their number. I usually end up with I gotta go to blah blah blah now, can I have your number. This way I would get good potential girls throughout the week so I could chill with them on the weekends. I usually approach soft 7s to 7.5 but mostly 7’s. I think I have decent looks and I try to dress non bummy throughout the week (I think taking advice from gq for like a year now has helped me a lot with this). Girls to meet seem easier to meet in the Centro during the day. Seems to me like they have time to waste if they are there browsing.

Overall experience: Unless you are in the neighborhood and have money to spend go, otherwise there are far easier places to get laid.

I would also add: if you are a surfer, you're in for some great days concerning weather, the beach and quality of girls. If you're not, then you'll se way-above-average talent, but chances are you won't bang anyone.

What company do you recommend for rental cars? I was there Dec 2011 right before peak season as only manual shifts were offered not to mention the rentals were $70.00 USD per day (per my pousada em Barra da Lagoa). I kid you not. Specific rental info would be great.

I would only recommend spending the $$ for Jurerê lodging if it's peak season or if there is some sort of special event going on there. For special events, look at the Pacha, P12, or Café de La Musique websites to see if there is anything good. Otherwise..you'll be paying extra to hear the sound of only the beach....while not being able to see hotties or even a damn person in sight.

Appreciate the insight on Centro though. Any good nightlife venues you would recommend specifically for Centro?

This night club shut down stuff is even prevalent in cities with friendlier women & ppl like Belo Horizonte or Porto Alegre...even if one speaks Portuguese & games well though daygame much easier there! I wouldn't even say being a blonde hair/blue eyed gringo would do the trick as well.

One thing you gotta realize is that Floripa has 400K people & it's scattered as hell esp without a car. The metro has 700K people whereas the 2nd tier cities with better infrastructure like POA/CWB/BH have 3+ million. Many people know each other so rumors spread fast. Because of tourism, gringos without Portuguese are not going to be considered special. Definitely more tourist female targets at peak season I imagine though.

For a tourist that might be stuck in Lagoa da Conceição, Black Swan is maybe the only redeeming quality of the area. Everything else is an overpriced tourist trap seafood restaurant, Confraria (House music) which is only open at the most sporadic times, and other overpriced ethnic restaurants such as Thai/Mexican. I remember paying 45 bucks for a Pad Thai, cocktail, and a water though the milfy English owner is cool personality wise.

As for Black Swan again, its reasonably priced & I didn't pay cover at least back in December 2011. Food & beer selection is solid as I loved the Samba cover bands that got chicks dancing. I agree chicks can be a bit cliquish...but the key is they will move in front of the band & typically show off their moves. I did the same thing too until this chick started laughing at my moves & checked me out. Opened in Portuguese & then we clicked.

We even got into a bit of a kissing session as her friends wanted to take pictures with me. Next thing you know, her group was getting curious about what type of East Asian I was. Another friend even asked if she could spend the night at my place lol...but it was Barra da Lagoa instead of the immediate neighborhood...makes me wonder if I stayed in Lagoa.

Wholeheartedly agree. Best to explore the natural wonders of the island off peak season, but for partying...best to spend it in Jurerê peak season with a group that can split costs & get access to other traveling tourists during the time!

@Brosemite I used Avis, picked it up at the airport, rented a small VW golf or fox I dont remember but it had four doors and was similar to what the other brazilians were driving. had it for 5 days with insurance for 235 US dollars at todays rate 589 brl to be exact. Also Black swan must have changed because now there is a cover price past 10 or 11 (cant remember) and the beers are a bit more expensive than the other clubs like Casa de Noca or Malam (which I recommend). In centro I went to Majestic once it was quite nice but expensive surprisingly this crowd was friendly I was rolling with two brazilian friends so that might be a reason. 1007 and Sete are decent and not too far from some bars in beira mar.

I'm moving to Floripa soon and need to get a one month Airbnb before I arrive.

My main issue is not knowing which neighborhoods are good to live based on what I need in a city. Additionally my girlfriend is not from Floripa so she doesn't have any data on the area.

I've scanned the internet for information but usually find the best information on anything to be right here in this forum. I've also scanned the various threads but they seem to mostly gear towards the nightlife and girls rather than living as an expat on the island.

These are the things I need, more or less, in a zone or neighborhood:

1) Walkable to cafes, restaurants, gym, commercial area.
2) Coworking/offices nearby
3) Area where there is a sizable amount of ubers (meaning they don't have to drive 15-20+ minutes to get to me). This won't be as necessary if walkability is good.

These are necessary until I at least get some sort of residency and can buy a car. I'll also be on my girl's home turf so that will be a new test for our relationship and I will see how it goes once we arrive.

Our plans are to stay in Brazil for several years and possibly get married at some point which is why I chose Floripa. It seems like a good city for its lower than average crime and good IT infrastructure (very necessary for work). It is definitely more expensive than what I have been paying for in Mexico, Asia which sucks but I still think it beats most places in the US in terms of cost, especially for a big, popular city.

If any expats or Brazilians on the forum know of any neighborhood that has the things I mentioned above, recommendations would be appreciated.

It depends, how much are you willing to spend and does being near a beach matter?

If you don't mind being a little bit far away from a beach, you can try some of the surrounding neighborhoods near UFSC (Trindade, Carvoeira, Pantanal etc..). You should be able to snag an apartment for a relatively decent price in this area. Plenty of cafes, restaurants and a mall within a short walk.

I'm not sure about the Uber and office space part, but if that's a concern Centro or Lagoa would be two other good options. Centro is guaranteed to have office space and nearby Ubers. Lagoa will have Uber, but I don't know about offices.

Keep in mind that peak season is on its way, so apartment rental prices are going to skyrocket and traffic is going to get ridiculous. Don't underestimate this part.

I lived in Lagoa da conceição - good cafes, gym, working spaces (a few coworking in lagoa, but cafe cultura is a good spot to chill out at, also the hostel across the way has solid wifi. will be expensive to get a month airbnb, end of the year is prime pricing for rental spots.

I worked in Acate, which is a commercial center geared to start ups. this is closer to centro and the north of the island, which is likely where you're best off finding a place to live.

Hey @Bill Brasky,

I'm moving back to town in February. Probably Joao Paulo or Santa Monica. Central location on the island, easy access to office on the sc 401.

Whats the vibe like down there these days? Of course this month is exceptional with the holiday madness.. What's your take on it? Any others in Floripa who have been there for a while can shed some light? Last time I was there from Mid 2014-Late 2015.

Honestly. It's chill here and there doesn't seem to be many people. I haven't encountered any bad vibes from people. I thought I'd be able to get by with Spanish but I've been struggling in the communications area but my work is all online and I just talk to my girlfriend.

In general I like Brazilians a lot. Much friendlier than Mexicans. The girls are also much hotter. I haven't gotten the bitch vibe from any although I haven't been trying to game as I have a girlfriend.
