I've find myself more attracted to traditional print media these days since it isn't as heavily afflicted with clickbait.

Google News can be personalized to prioritize sci/tech, finance, whatever and keep out bullshit like "entertainment" news.

BBC is as good as it gets for an overall picture of the world. You miss certain stories but everyone does.
I know that it isn't perfect and that there are stories that they should cover, but as far as understanding the world generally, they are less biased than others, and fairly comprehensive.
Besides that, I don't really read or pay attention to the news, and my life is all the better for it. Maybe before I would have felt somewhat guilty about living mostly news-free, but that was when I still felt connected to society at large. These days I recognize that I am an outlier - and my habits should reflect that, for example, what I pay attention to in the world at large. I'm more interested in girls and my career/finances than world news.
Actually, I get some local news that I find interesting, for example new bike lanes or what's going on down the street.
But the other day when there was some talk about Eric Garner over lunch? I was lost, and used the time that I would have to discuss what a chokehold is, to instead discuss finance and stocks with an equities trader. As a result, my life personally is better and I will probably make more money, plus I gained a contact.

Also, reading the news becomes less important as you come to know about the world generally.
There's very little in the news anymore that genuinely surprises me, as with life generally. People very rarely ever surprise me anymore, and the same goes for the news.
I'd say that if you don't quite understand the world yet, read a bunch of news sources generally until you have a fairly good grasp of the modern world. Then read up on your history books and you'll see that the same things are happening today.
Then, you don't even really have to read the news anymore, because the same things keep happening. If it's really important, you'll hear about it in person.
It depends though. It can be important to keep up with world events for financial reasons, if you're in the stock market. Or for use as social lubricant with acquaintances and colleagues.
I most certainly don't get any news from Facebook friends - all of my friends I have unfollowed, meaning their news feeds don't appear in mine. This saves me time reading up on useless shit that has no effect on my life.

Due to the nature of my education and profession, I'm required to keep abreast of current political and economic news, nationally and internationally. In addition, for pure interest, I do read literary and film reviews as well as keep up to date to with tech news and developments.

Al Jazeera English, their international service, is very good. I prefer it to Al Jazeera America.
