Could I get by with something like ZipCar, Uber, etc in places like Phoenix that don't have good public transportation/are spread out - without taking a huge financial hit?

Phoenix metro is probably in the top 10 worst places in the United States to live in if you don't have a car.

I learned that very quickly. Thankfully I had some family in town and I was able to borrow a car from my uncle for a few days to get furniture. I would have been screwed without that. Or at least I would have ended up paying a shitload more for furniture.

After that - I lived here for a month - all of January and some of February - without a car. It wasn't as bad as you might think. I was actually able to get by - Uber is $5 to waterfront from where I'm at with all the bars. Having a bike was crucial too. I put groceries in a backpack - 5 minute ride to Sprouts and back, and Bashas is across the street from me. So I was okay on a day to day basis.

The problem is I wasn't able to get out and really explore until I had a car. I'm trying to do all the outdoor stuff - I could get to Camelback which is great, but nothing else. So yeah, trying to go long term without a car wasn't happening.

The nice thing about the whole experience, is that if shit every happens and my car is in the shop for a while or I have to do without one, for whatever reason - I know that I can get by fine.
