How to be a professional gambler

I would love to be a professional gambler. Work a few hours a day playing cards or craps. Make a quick and easy $1000 a day everyday and live it up. Has anyone here had any success doing this and quitting their day job? Any advice?

I don't have much experience on the subject, but just remember that casinos are set up for the house to win. Though it's possible to make money gambling, you have to be ready to lose money as well.

There's an illustrious history of playboys also being serious gamblers. Casanova springs to mind.

If you're serious about this online poker is probably your best bet.

A friend of mine made close to a million dollars in a couple of years of playing, with no previous experience. However, it's far from glamourous and will take thousands of hours grinding at your computer to get there. Plus a level head and serious appetite for risk.

This article about how the poker game is changing is very entertaining: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/27/magazi...gewanted=1

"Work a few hours...Make a quick and easy $1000 a day everyday and live it up"

Wouldn't we all.

I know a few cats that are "professional" gamblers. Most have heavy swings and are in huge debt at times.

My good friends father is in the Poker Hall of Fame. He doesn't play anymore and I don't know the whole story, but I believe it had a negative impact on his life.

Even world class poker players (guys who won the world series) are in massive debt at times.

As they say, "Gambling is a hard way to make an easy living".

Not saying it can't be done, hope you get some good cards.

I don't know guys. I like to frequent Atlantic City. When I go I usually only play with $200-300. Most of the time I leave on the positive. Up about $500 to $1000. I'd love to move down there and do that everyday for a living but haven't had the balls to take the leap. I like all the clubs, bars and nightlife down there. Plus right on the beach. I've seen decent apartments listed for $500 a month for a 1 bedroom.

one of the truest things you'll ever hear in gambling circles.

Money management is all the name of the game, you need a major bankroll to survive the swings of luck, you'll need incredible discipline to not go on tilt when that luck rolls against you and even more discipline to not become one of those that begins to crave action of any sort, you'll see that many of the top poker players are some of the worst sports gamblers you'll ever see, the skill doesn't translate from one form of gambling to another so you'll see Ivey win a mill in poker, lose 2 mill in bball, you also reach a point where making 4-500 a day feels like nothing and you'll be betting way over that which feels great when you're winning but when you're losing the money goes quick. If you can keep it all in check there's a life there but it's a lot to keep in control and takes a hell of a strong person with serious discipline.

Well let's put it in perspective gentlemen. $1000 a day X 5 days a week X 52 weeks a year comes out to $260,000/year. I don't think it's unattainable.

Did you do any real accounting? "Most of the time" is a classic example of wishful thinking. You may leave with extra $10 (which is positive) 9 out of 10 times, and lose $200 the next time. Try to honestly account your gambling expenses and income, and you'll see that in a long term you're losing money.

You're either a troll or you really are this naive. As G mentioned earlier, the best poker players in the world live a roller coaster life. They swing into periods of massive debt and are sometimes fronted $500K+ by other players that they have to pay back with interest.

Unless you have Rain Man IQ and super memory, it is extremely difficult to count cards (blackjack) in casinos nowadays. They pretty much all use 6 decks now and are always shuffling new decks in.

I tried my hand at serious sports gambling a few years back. I was making profit and it was extremely fun, but it was stressful and an overall roller coaster. Being a youngin, I wasn't disciplined enough and I took too much risk and blew my bankroll. Great memories, but shit got crazy.

Online sports books and casinos are a shady bunch and will fuck you over if you consistently win big by not honoring your winnings.

It's obvious you don't know that much about serious gambling, so stop wasting your time. Put your time and energy into something useful that are more knowledgeable about.

G nailed this one. And, @MacNCheez, if your $260,000 "formula" doesn't work out, you can start a thread on how to be a bounty hunter or a high-seas pirate next. [Image: thumb.gif]

I make a living from ONLINE gambling. You'll never make $1000 a day though especially not playing craps and never in real life casinos. I don't make money from poker either, I play that for fun.

You get lucky, that's all it is. The house edge is in the casinos favour so in the long run you will become a loser. There is no way to beat the casinos long term. Card counting is extremely difficult or impossible these days because of random shuffles and multiple decks so unless you're cheating you can't guarantee a profit.

Impossible. If it was so easy to make $1000 a day we'd all be doing it.

I'll tell you what you CAN do though, go find a website called 'beating bonuses' and another called 'online blackjack guide' they'll show you how to make profit from online casino bonuses. Then google 'matched betting' and 'arbing' and then read, read and read some more and when you understand the concepts join a website called 'the gambling times' and start making money from sportbooks bonuses.

The glory days are LONG over though, people have been doing this for around 10 years, the casinos and bookies caught on a long time ago and it is far from easy. You'll have to spend hours every day sat in front of a PC, grinding out bonuses, playing hand after hand, analysing sports odds and generally being bored out your mind and anti social. It's not glamarous and the money isn't anywhere near the levels you aspire to have, you can maybe make a little over $1000 a month these days if you are lucky. You've missed the boat and I probably wouldn't bother starting out now, more hassle than it's worth with casinos restricting all the profitable games, not paying out, making the terms so difficult to follow you're guaranteed to break them etc.

Poker is still possible to make a living from if you have a brain like a calculator, patience of a saint, killer instinct, good at reading situations etc but most people can't make a profit long term from this either.

Feel free to ask me any questions or send me a PM.

OK let me lay out my theory on this subject.

If you sit down at a $10/hand blackjack table with $200 and play for a little while, how hard would it to be to be up $40? That's 20% profit.

I've had it happen plenty of times.

Now let's scale it up 10 times.

You sit at a $100/hand table with $2000 and play for a while. How hard would it be to be up $400? Also 20% profit.

The game is the same at any betting level.

You just have to play it properly and know when to walk away.

Why can't you play for an hour a day everyday, make 20% profit and walk away?

Thoughts?

I´m a professional gambler, mostly focusing on poker, both online and live, ask me anything you want though I may opt to not answer some questions. To give you an idea, I make a lot more than 1000 a month, I´ve never been close to being in debt, and I´ve been doing this as a primary income stream for years.

Mathematically, this won´t work out that way in the long run. To put it simply, you´re looking at it from a common but wrong perspective. Let´s say the house has an edge in the game, say 51-49 in blackjack if you know the odds but don´t have an outside edge. The way it really works is that every time you play a hand(you put in 50 dollars), you are getting 49 back. That is after thousands of hands, it will work out that way and you will eventually go broke. Even a slight disadvantage like this is huge since you are eating it every hand. You can survive for a short term by doing stuff like limiting your wins but the longer you play, the more likely you will be to eventually lose it all. This is one of the fundamentals of gambling.

So it seems like Poker is your game of choice. What's so special about Poker relative to blackjack or craps?

How much do I need to start with in order to make $1000 a day profit?

With blackjack or craps, you need a "special" advantage to be profitable. Where as with poker, the element of skill is already a huge built in factor. You can play straight.

You can make 1000 in a day with 10 dollars. The right question to ask is how big of a bankroll do I need to be extremely unlikely to go broke. That will depend on the stakes you are playing for, how skillful you area, and how wild the game is.

That´s a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer playing live because they like the atmosphere, and being able to see players. For no limit games, tells are more important. Other people like play online because it´s faster and they can multitask (I´m playing 2 tables while typing this). Generally, the skill level is higher online but you have more freedom to pick where you want to play, you play more hands, and

Tournaments vs. Cash games. This depends what you like. Personally I don´t even play tournaments because I don´t like being forced to play so long despite my mood and focus. Some people are better at one or the other too.

Are you kidding? There is no real fool proof way to make that kinda jack daily gambling! My advice is the double + 1 method and back with the sports book. If you know sports and are near a casino that could work. Its very boring but you can make 150 to 300 a day. Start slow and learn! The other people in the casino are usually the worst people to take advice from so keep to yourself. The casino hates that method but its legal and they will hate you so its not a real fun way to make a living!..Good luck and if you need advice thats specific let me know..

Las Vegas wasn't built on winners. One of my roommates won the world series of poker once and spends a great deal of time online playing now. He's not balling anymore and has another job as well. You'll never have any real money IMHO doing that for a living, or if you do, it won't last.

Are you talking about doubling up bets if your bet loses i.e.l the martingale system? If you are that's a sure fire way to go broke quickly and a mugs game. Apologies if you are not.

Your friend won the main event at the WSOP? What's his name? If he did then he'd surely be a sponsored pro making a ton of money from endorsement and avertising and getting paid to travel round and play in all the major tournaments by one of the big poker sites.

You CAN make BIG money from poker, there's many poker pros making an absolute fortune. People are playing million dollar pots online, up to about $4million changing hands in single sessions. Even those who are playing full time and not near that level can grind out a much better income than most people working 9-5. You have to be good at it though, not everyone can play poker for a living.

MacNcheez there's no set way for you to make a $1000 profit a day playing poker. I'll bet my life on it that you don't. If you were any good at poker you'd be playing it now and making a fortune from it instead of asking questions on here about what's better live or online and where to start. Join FullTilt (via pokerstrategy.com to get a free $50) and see how you play, you're not going to get rich any time soon from it, it's a hard slog. You probablt won't ever get rich from it but you might enjoy it and can at least have some fun or make a few bucks.

And your idea about making 20% profit on BJ, do you not understand the edge is in the CASINOS favour that's how they make a profit. You can know the game inside out when to hit, stick, double, split and still the edge is in their favour, there is no long term way to beat the casino.

Find another way to make money, gambling is not the answer.
