I went to a concert for my favorite band tonight* and it was a great show. The crowd is always better in this city than the other city I go to see them, and this was my 8th show. (Sidenote: some girl kept whacking me with her bag or side/elbow, when there was more than enough space not to do that. I did consider saying something, but wasnt really in the mood to do anything. I was just there for music.) At the end, like most bands, the guitarists tossed out their picks. One was heading for me, and I thought it was gonna go over my head, so I didnt reach out, and it plopped down in front of me, but on the other side of the fence they have to keep the crowd back a few feet. I tried to reach over and grab it, but no luck. Then, a giant bouncer lumbered over, picked it up, and handed it to some girl. So cruel.
After that, they decided to give the setlists away. One of the bandmembers reached down with the setlist to a girl next to me, and held it there for a second. I reached out, but hesitated and blinked. She got it. I had the chance and I should know better: we get no free passes and have to work for things, while women just get handed stuff. It wouldve been funny to have grabbed it from the girl and she would say "Hey! WTF!" and I just laugh and walk away, or use it to open, since that might make her a bit attracted. Oh well, next time Ill have to be more selfish and aggressive in getting the "loot".
Anyway, to make this more positive, has anyone ever gotten the picks or drumsticks or anything that bands toss out at the crowd? Or have you been to an afterparty for a somewhat known band or musician (ie not your friends brothers garage band)? I am definitely gonna try harder next time because after all these shows Ive been to, I want to get something cool to show for it. You can only waste money on so many shirts before it gets to be ridiculous.
*I prefer not to say what band publicly to maintain some anonymity from those who know me elsewhere because the band is somewhat obscure and I am known by my friends for liking them.
