This, my friends, is what happens when you push for law after law. You or your allies eventually wind up ensnared by those very laws.
One of the most progressive (and wealthiest) counties in the country, Howard County, Maryland, has a very active Human Rights group and, as such, has bunch of laws on the books about sexual harassment.
Back in June, a female board of education member, Cindy Vaillancourt, was addressing a group of parents and students and casually asked "Did you know that you have to be 18 to buy condoms?"
Sound harmless? It wasn't. The very mention of mere condoms connoted sex -- sex!!!!! -- and it sent one of the students present and his parents into a frenzy so they filed a sexual harassment complaint just discovered by the Baltimore Sun via a public information request.
I don't know whether they were really offended or trying to prove a point, but they're really fucking with this woman. They're asking for a public apology and assurances that "another student will not have to experience the discomfort that our son had to undergo."
It gets better: after an investigation through the Office of Equity Assurance (whatever the hell that is), they found that Vaillancourt had, in fact, violated the board's sexual harassment policy because she made "a sexually offensive comment to a male student that was unwelcomed and inappropriate."
If this sounds familiar, it's because this is the type of bullshit men have to deal with -- a complete encroachment on basic freedom of speech that redefines that speech as somehow "offensive."
But it was women who wanted invasive rules like this. Now they have them. I hope they're happy.
Special note to feminists who are reading this: I hope all of you who are looking to get fraternities banned from campuses and writers fired from their jobs think twice because one day you might also find yourselves a victim of the unfree society your are helping to create.
Here is a picture of the sexual harasser in question and a link to the full story. If anyone knows that old Elvis Costello song "Shot With His Own Gun," now is the time to play it.
