What do you guys think of Windows 8?

It is shite for desktop users. Why would Microsoft think that desktop users would want an OS designed for tablets/phones.
I think Windows 8 was released way to quickly, 7 was ,and still is an amazing OS. Only time will tell what windows 9 is going to be like. Rumors are saying it will launch next year, stating it will be a combination of 7/8 and better suited for desktops.

I bought a new desktop computer for my mom for Christmas a couple years ago and had to show her how to use Windows 8. I hated it with a passion from day one. I'm still using Windows 7 and have no intention to upgrade it anytime soon.
Windows 8 felt like it was designed for complete idiots who don't know how to use computers and need to be grabbed by hand and lead around. You now have all these "apps" for shopping sites and weather and games. If I need any of that shit, I know how to find it myself. I don't need MS to shove it down my face.
As long as I've been running Windows I would always customize the looks and setting so that it was minimalist. In my opinion the best OS is one you don't really notice. Just a small bar at the bottom of the screen and a way to quickly get to what you need to get to. And THAT'S IT. Here is my desktop:

I use Windows 8.1 on a (non-touch screen) laptop. I think it's great. Prefer it to all previous Windows versions.

I don't even use the stupid tiles to be honest. I pin all my common programs to the task bar.
When I go to different customer locations around NYC and try to get online sometimes it's a hassle.
Some of the network admins say they're network policies don't support Windows 8.
For the most part anything I plug into it works driver-wise. They do ok with installing generic drivers
when you first install Windows 8. Just do a Windows update after you're good to go.

I agree with Barksdale, it was designed for touchscreen and is very annoying for desktop users. I don't like it but I am using it right now as I type this.

The most telling thing about Windows 8 is that when you install it for a user, the wise move is to install the "Classic Shell" program that makes it look like Windows 7. It's a wack operating system.
I'm not a proper tech person, but it seems like Windows just tried to do some sort of half-assed version of Apple.

I'm thinking about getting the Surface Pro 3. I will probably switch to the classic shell. I want to be able to do digital sketching and sculpting on the go and its one of the best available now. Who know when 9 will be released. By then they might have the kinks taken out of the Wacom Companion.

As others pointed out they messed up by forcing desktop users to use their computers like tablets. I have a Windows 8 laptop but with enough customizations it runs like Windows 7 and I can still access the apps and stuff (but I rarely do). Who needs apps on a laptop?

Since everyone here seems to be anti-Windows 8, I'll list some things that I like about it:
* I've had every version of Windows(well, not every version, but XP, Vista, and Windows 7) and the start up time for Windows 8 beats them all.
* The multitasking feature comes in handy(at least for me) when you have to switch back and forth between documents or programs.
* Everyone seems to hate the live tiles screen but I like it. Just remove all the useless shit you don't need and add the things that you do need.
* I don't have to open up Google Chrome or some other web browser just to search for something on the internet—I can do it right from the start screen.
I also have Windows 8.1 but that doesn't make much of a difference.

I just got a new computer. Now maybe I'll post more. I hate writing on my phone. I haven't gotten used to windows 8 yet. I think I like the older versions better.

I agree with all. I downloaded a program yesterday and could not figure out how to see all of my programs, which is ridiculous.
Anyway, if people are trying to get the start button back you can just search how to get your start button back, download the Classic Shell and boom you will have a working start button back which is great

I've been using it on a non-touch screen laptop for the better part of a year now. There are some things that I like and others I don't.

I quit using Windows in 2008. Since then I use Ubuntu and I don't regret my choice.

Im been using it for couple of years. To be honest I really didnt like it in the start, for example the default PDF reader is real shit since it opens in full screen. Now when I have customized it its useable but I havent found anything good about it.

It sucks. It just makes everything more difficult and memory consuming than it has to be.
I remember the first month I had it I kept opening random apps because I was lightly dragging my finger across the mousepad.
Anyone tried using the built-in Skype app? It's laggy to the point of being unusable, not to mention obtrusive as hell.
Another thing that annoys me is when you go the app screen, it shows all these randomly selected pictures from your folders and Skype contacts. I'm doing something on my computer with a chick in the room and BAM -- there's all those naked girl pics I hid in some obscure folder where I thought no one would ever see them. Oh, and there's a massive picture of one of my female Skype contacts, too. Great.
There are a few features that might be handy if I cared to learn the OS, but that's the whole point -- you shouldn't have to LEARN your OS. It should just work.

Everytime i talk to someone who has Windows 8 preinstalled on a machine, i point them to classic shell.
No need to change the UI.
