As the title so readily states this thread is about cropping images without being a dick about it.
Windows
Using the Snipping Tool you can capture the exact region of the window you wish to capture. Cropping is done real-time as you're specifying the exact area that you want to save.
On Windows 7 the path is Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Snipping Tool

If you're more of a Photoshop guy, though, you can use the Crop Tool.
Select the Crop Tool.

Click and hold the left mouse button while dragging your desired size.

Hit the ENTER key on your keyboard to apply the cropped dimensions.

Save your newly-cropped image and you're all set!
Macintosh
I'll do a tutorial for cropping images on a Mac when I get to work tomorrow since the only place I have access to an iMac is my office.
