[Tech Series] How to Crop Images

Per Cobra's suggestion here.

As the title so readily states this thread is about cropping images without being a dick about it.

Windows

Using the Snipping Tool you can capture the exact region of the window you wish to capture. Cropping is done real-time as you're specifying the exact area that you want to save.

On Windows 7 the path is Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Snipping Tool

If you're more of a Photoshop guy, though, you can use the Crop Tool.

Select the Crop Tool.

Click and hold the left mouse button while dragging your desired size.

Hit the ENTER key on your keyboard to apply the cropped dimensions.

Save your newly-cropped image and you're all set!

Macintosh

I'll do a tutorial for cropping images on a Mac when I get to work tomorrow since the only place I have access to an iMac is my office.

What does is it mean to "be a dick" about cropping images?

I would think being a dick would be posting a 1200x1200 pix or more image on a thread. Slow to load and you have to scroll to see the whole image.

For a web-based solution on either PC or Mac, you can also use the free image editor at pixlr:

Pixlr Link

Same idea, but you can open an image from URL or your computer, scale it down [Image - Image Size - (make sure "constrain proportions" is checked) - decrease either pixel value], or crop it [drag the box over the area - image - crop -click "yes"]. Save your image and you're good to go.

A lifesaver if you've ever blogged full-time, accessible on any kind of machine, and pretty easy and intuitive, too.

Hope this helps, gents...

THERE IS NO IMAGE; THERE IS ONLY ZUUL.

Your avatar is so obviously from Ghostbusters I had to throw this up. Props, man!

Macintosh

OS/X comes with a Preview application that can be used for simple cropping.

1. Open up Preview (it should be there by default on the Dock; it looks like two postcards)

2. Open the image you wish to edit (File > Open)

3. Go to Tools > Select Tool (or just hit Command-3 as a keyboard shortcut)

4. Select the region you want to use

5. Go to Tools > Crop (or just hit Command-K as a keyboard shortcut)

6. Save the image with File > Save a Version

You're all set!

Thanks Hawk, though I have to say I came a LOT closer to world domination than Zuul and Gozer ever did. Stay Puft Marshmallow Man? Get the fuck outta here with that shit! I had fuckin' MOOD-ALTERING SLIME, son...if it wasn't for that fuckin' Statue of Liberty and Jackie Wilson, the streets of New York would look like 15th-century Carpathia by now...which I think anyone can admit would be an improvement...
