Learning Salsa

I've started learning salsa, and up until now it was just to have fun and meet some girls. However, the more I get into the more I realize this is something with a ton of potential. It teaches you a great deal of skills that help with the ladies both on the floor and off. Like seductive eye contact, mastering nonverbal cues and body motion, and most importantly LEADING WITH STRENGTH AND CONFIDENCE.

There's no reason that confidence leading women on the dance floor can't improve confidence leading in general, IMO.

Anybody here learned salsa, if so was it worth it? Did it also help off the dance floor?

A subject after my own heart. I learned salsa after living in Colombia for a few years. Took some lessons, but like with Spanish, the real knowledge only came from practice with actual people outside the classroom. Showing that I can actually dance has definitely helped me close a few times. It makes intuitive sense: compare the wallflower who says “dancing is gay” with the guy who can rip it up on the dance floor with any girl in the room. Who do you think has more confidence and creates more attraction? This is besides the fact that dancing is pretty much pure kino. If kino intimidates you, dancing is a very easy way to create it. It is also a good way to measure a girl’s attraction. Whether she’s really getting into dancing with you, or just kind of going through the motions, you have a pretty obvious way to see which way the interaction is going.

Putting girls aside for a moment, salsa music itself is just fantastic. The lyrics can be poetic and a great way to learn the language, and the songs have a lot in common with old-school soul music. It is a blast watching salsa musicians onstage, and they are often quite talented, needing to improvise like jazz musicians do.

As far as helping me off the dance floor, I find that practicing almost any skill until you can do it well increases your confidence and improves your quality of life. The fact that salsa dancing is explicitly designed for practice with women who are in good shape and wearing tight clothing makes it even more of a confidence booster. And it’s good exercise, which also helps for overall well-being.

In sum, I highly recommend learning how to dance salsa.

Yep. The Salsa Swoop Move:

http://www.thegmanifesto.com/2010/03/the...-move.html

I can honestly say it is the one thing that has helped my Game the most in the last year. I can't think of a girl I have swooped since I learned that it didn't play a role.

And I can honestly say that if you don't learn to dance, you are absolutely handicapping yourself on swooping girls.

You might as well not speak other languages, don't smoke cigarettes, stop smiling, stop telling jokes and don't wear Custom Suits as far as I am concerned.

I've been dancing salsa for many years and was, at a point, quite good and quite hardcore into the scene. I even taught it for a short period. It definitely works on many levels, though I think that a lot of guys think it's a silver bullet for meeting chicks. (Unfortunately, many of these guys now crowd some of the cooler spots in the big cities.) You need solid game behind your dancing. I've known plenty of great dancers (in salsa and other genres) that get zero tail.

Dancing basically replaces your standard opener; it's another weapon in your arsenal. You still need to build comfort, establish rapport, and close the deal beyond that. Dancing alone won't get you to the sack--no matter how good you are. Having said that, you can't half-ass your dancing. You can't know a few basic moves (or do a few fancy moves sloppily) and expect to impress anyone. Also, on any given night, there's a boat-load of sausage using the same approach trying to meet chicks. Salsa spots aren't softer targets like they used to be. Bitch shields are definitely up and the cockblock- and fatty-factors are in full effect.

The value of dancing goes beyond a simple A-to-B relationship of introducing you to girls. Like gringoed points out, it teaches you--if you learn it correctly, study it, and internalize it--things like poise, body control, and body language. This, in my opinion, is the bigger value. You learn to use those little improvements in your everyday life.

In the end, Salsa (and all dancing) is a valuable tool in the right hands but, like a lot of the things we do, requires time and dedication.

A+ agree 100%. I am also a salsa aficionado, I taught on 2 mambo many years ago.

I get more tail with Salsa in foreign countries (and small mostly white, college towns in USA) than I do with latinas in Miami. Dancing Salsa with a Russian, Jewish, Slovenian, Japanese or African-American chics (especially the sistas, they fucking love salsa) gets you laid---very fast!

I don't bother with salsa clubs in America - they are full of sausage, and the latinas have bitch shields that need to be almost insulted to bring down to a realistic level.

Yes Salsa is great and like Mixx and G said it is DEADLY in swooping women anywhere and especially in Europe or around the world.

I have been dancing Salsa all my life in a club freestyle type form. I was always against learning what I termed ballroom Salsa. However, when I commited to learning it formally (in my case LA Style On1) my skill took off. Women really notice your skill, and they stare in your eyes like they are trying to look though your soul! It is very sensual and women love to be lead properly. If you have been in the Salsa dance community in any given city you will find out how many people have left someone or are sleeping around because of this maldito baile.

It's hit or miss in RIC. Some nights there are girls to dance with. Some times there are nothing but guys. I enjoy it but have been staying away until I can get my own dance partner. If I go to a class or a lesson and it's nothing but guys I just walk away. Some guys will dance with each other, not me.

My grandparents used to dance salsa when they were younger. I've seen old videos and they used to go hard. Like in the middle of the dance floor and people just watching lol. I think I might ask them if they can teach me, I've never thought about learning until this thread

I do west coast swing. That's some lethal, potent dancing. Don't get me started.

I was in Costa Rica last week and I noticed that they do a form of swing dancing there.

For those in the NYC area, this is a hot spot on Wednesdays for salsa and Rosa and her girls should provide some extra incentive tonight as well

I've heard Salsa and Swing touted as the top 2 main styles of dancing to learn because of the heavy partner dance move element. If you had to choose one, which one would be best to learn? I'm looking for applicability in your average club with a dance floor. I'm not looking to start hitting the salsa/swing club circuit. Thanks.

I'd probably learn salsa first, tbh. They're both fun, though.
