So I watched the 1st episode of season 2. Almost didn't make it through the first 1/2 hour. Will still give it a couple of more episodes to see. I'm trying to not compare it to the first season, but so far I'm not impressed. Thoughts?

Didn't see it but DVR'd it. It would be hard for ANYTHING to live up to Season 1. I'll give it 2-3 episodes. Did catch Ballers after - that was some funny shit. Just having Larry Csonka and Don Shula do a cameo was priceless!

Saw the first episode of season 2 and here is my thoughts: Dogshit.

There is the stereotypical "tough girl" cop. The shitty location (LA County). Slow pacing. Lame plot line (corruption). Vaughn and Ferrell are weak. I even hate the music.

Overall, the second season seems like a cheap ripoff of the first.

^ The music is terrible. The theme totally doesn't work. Season 1 had a perfect intro song, which makes this season's misstep all the more glaring.

Rachel McAdams has a nice butt though.

Also they left out the best scene in episode one! The alleged violation that gets the one guy in trouble. Don't wanna say too much.

Ferrell seems good. Vaughn looked quite awkward in a few scenes, McAdams ass is great.

I'll watch the season since there isn't anything to watch currently, but I don't have huge hopes.

Dude, he didn't fuck the actress.

Didn't you see that little blue pill he took?

It probably isn't as good as season one. I'll reserve judgement.

But it's almost comical how much texans are jealous of California. It's like some dude from a third world shithole talking crap about the US.

It is a shitty location for a cop/detective drama. It has been done to death.

Part of what made True Detective season 1 so great was that it was set in the backwoods of Louisiana, which is a much more exotic location than boring LA county.

Yeah I really liked the setting. It's really just nice to have shows getting out of LA/NYC.

I'm surprised by how poorly this is being reviewed. I didn't think it was awful. It also didn't help that they had to introduce 4 characters who all required separate scenes. Compared to season 1 where the two characters spent most of their time together. I'd imagine the cops will be working together now.

I thought Farrell was good, although the alcoholic cop has been done to death. I was hoping Vaughn would be good but I'm not so sure. I just can't take him seriously. The line about "never eat when you're hungry" awful. The show tries too hard.

I'm not sure where the show will go but I think it could be discussing masculinity in a big way.

You have Vaughn who is infertile, Kitsch who is impotent, Farrell who was cuckolded (knowingly) and unable to protect his wife, and McAdams who grew up with no real dad and now tries to be a hard-ass to compensate. She even tries to be her sisters dad.

Also I've only seen Kitsch in Lone Survivor (which was good) and Savages (which was horrendous), but is he a good actor? He didn't really do much. That motorcycle scene was kinda ridiculous too.

Wait! Why would they move the setting. This show is unique and they could ran with the occult/secert society for a while.

I liked it. Gritty as hell. Was hoping Farrell would deliver and he did. As for now he's the standout.

Vaughn seems a bit awkward its true but I hope he will find his stride.

Music and landscape were good and fitting. Thought the intro was weird but played it a couple times and it caught on. Bar scene with the woman singing "this is my least favorite life" with farrell and vaughn both looking haggard reminded me of the eery feeling of the first season.

The mood of the first seasons is going to be very difficult to capture. It was almost magical how they did it. The relative unknown of rural Louisiana contributed to this.

LA is a known quantity. Anyway, it may not be fair to judge this season based on the first one. I thought the episode 1 was decent, but not awesome. Hopefully improves over time. Have to let it stand or fall on its own merits.

I live in LA and I agree with the criticism of the locations. The dark brooding soundtrack doesn't match sunny Southern California. LA is a dull concrete jungle compared to the Lousiana backwoods. If the action takes place outside of LA, as in Ventura County at the end of the episode, then things could get interesting.

The fact that the Casino is located in an industrial shithole area takes away from the glamour of Vince Vaughn being a rich businessman.

I loved the first season. Unless Vince Vaughn commits a miracle, I think he was miscast in this...Matthew McConaughey was incredible in season one. He's great in the film Killer Joe too.

I was expecting a similar set up with 2 cops together all the time, but Vince Vaughn isn't even a cop!

First episode of season 2 held my interest, but can't hold a candle to season 1. I was interested to see Vince Vaughn in a non-comedic role, dude even looks like he dropped a few pounds to get into character. But he was speaking too softly and his lines fell flat.

Rachel McAdam's character seems to have been created in response to last season's critics decrying the lack of complex female character's in season 1. Typical emotionally damaged woman who is closed off in her intimate relationships. One semi-interesting aspect of her character is her relationship with her father. Her dad is some kind of new age hippie guru who thinks life runs on good vibes, and said something to the effect of "Your whole personality is constructed in reaction to me." She became a hard-nosed cop who has to look out for her sister because her dad is a cuckoo. A reversal of the trope of the straight-and-narrow father with a daughter who joins a commune to get gangbanged by cult leaders.

Colin Farrell's scenes with his fat son and later beating the shit out of the bully kid's dad were terrific. Finally something that gave this show a jolt which to me resembled season one Marty beating the shit out of the older guy who banged his daughter.

I saw no issue with Farrell or Vaugns acting. I think the biggest thing holding Vaugn back is we've seen him in so many comedys its hard to adjust and see the character he's portraying in this show. I don't think him having a deeper voice or forcing his voice to be deeper would add anything to his character other than make him more cliche. I thought the female lead over-acted a bit though in the camgirl bust though. Regardless, the first episode introduced us to the characters and what they are about. Wasn't as epic as season ones opener, but I'm definately staying tuned.

spoilers below:

I watched season 2 episode 1. I tried to separate my opinions on this show from the first season which I really liked and just judge it objectively on its own merits. The only character I found objectionable was the female cop played by Rachel McAdams. It's was over the top making her think, act and drink like a macho man that just annoys me because its not realistic. One scene it was like they switched the role of man and woman in a normal exchange the morning after a hookup where she is kicking out a guy she just fucked and he is trying to talk about their relationship and how he feels about her. Fuck, in the next episode she will probably be beating up guys 100lbs and a foot taller than her. However, other than that character and the lame theme song this show is more entertaining to me than most cop/detective shows. I doubt it will be a great season but for its genre of television its still probably one of the best shows you can watch.

@ Bacon

I'm not annoyed with her charactor because she's not doing those things in a positive "just like the guys" type way, but rather a damaged girl with daddy issuss type way. Now if she starts beating up guys twice her size, then I'll have an issue with it.

Also, I the scene of her kicking the beta guy out gave me flashbacks of the Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia episode where Mac bangs Dennis' Mom.

I had a similar experience. I started to get antsy about 10 minutes in. Found myself pausing the episode and reading RVF every 10 minutes or so. I couldn't finish watching - got only so far up until 45 minutes or so. I most likely won't be watching the following episodes unless the hype is high and I need to see for myself.

I was concerned it would stink after reading some posts here.

I thought the first episode was exceptional.

I have no problems with McAdams actions. Honestly the situation with her kicking the guy out while he wants to blab about his feelings is far from unusual. In fact that probably is unfortunately rather common in our society.

Farrell plays an excellent cop.

The one surprise to me was how could of well Taylor Kirsch played.

I will be tuning in anxiously every week.

I always find it odd that a negative critique is book-ended with an inference that full attention was not given prior to arriving at that assessment.

Shows of this nature are nuanced, draw on motifs/symbolism, with adrenaline inducing sequences meted out to serve the plot - not the audience members too impatient to let the story percolate and unfold tastefully.

We're one episode in. Hindsight is 20/20, so no-one had a clue about the greatness that was season one at the same stage. Give it time, or come back at the end of the season, should the reviews be hyped to your standards.
