Jobs in Amsterdam

I'm a student and not exactly rolling cash but would rather explore the world on a budget than spend my summer in a similar job in the shitty UK. My plan is to get a bus to Amsterdam and stay in a cheap hostel/ campsite and look for work.

Basically just wondered if anyone here has gone out to a European city before and just asked around in bars/shops for casual work or do you try and sort something out beforehand?

In general, if you can't speak the local language fluently, you will have a hard time finding work (though there are exceptions).

Your best bet is to develop some marketable "internet related" skills and leverage that to working on a laptop anywhere in the world.

Amsterdam and Berlin are the best cities to get a job in outside of the Anglosphere, if you don't wish to learn Dutch or German. You get the continental European honeys, the millions of tourists, and pretty damn good infrastructure. Most locals in these two cities are open to foreigners and aren't as closed-off as they would be in a smaller town in the same country.

Everyone is fluent in English in Amsterdam. And you get alot of English tourists there (since it is 40 minutes by plane from London).

So - I think that would be a good place to start with. Really interesting place.

I have to agree. Not speaking Dutch in Amsterdam, will set you back a little but not much. The place is packed with tourists, and the Dutch in Amsterdam speak excellent English. The question is what kind of job are you looking for? When you know this, you know where to start looking.

But guys, the fight itself isn't the focus here. How the whole thing was instigated by 1 girl is the big deal.

Something else to consider.

Do you really want to travel the world?

I once thought I did because literally all my friends were doing it. And it seemed like the done thing to do. Take a gap year - go travelling.

Like a right of passage.

But then one day (during a conversation with a friend) it suddenly struck me that the travelling the world was the last thing on earth I wanted to do. And for some reason I had blindly gone along with such thinking without ever questioning it.

This probably won't apply to you. But it is interesting how we can find ourselve unthinkingly following certain paths without ever really analysing why you want to do it.
