Best Smartphone?

My phone fucking died tonight. It's a touchscreen whose touch capability has stopped working. I can see the booty call text message. I just can't click on it, respond to it, or press the buttons I need to call her back. FUUUUuuuuuu...
So I need a new phone.
The good news is I might be able to get a smartphone. My previous phone was a dumbphone - no apps, no internet. Just calls and texts. But I'd like to make a decision soon, because not having a phone is seriously cockblocking me right now.
My one drawback for getting a smartphone is privacy/security. I realize post Snowden revelations, there may not be a phone that doesn't log everywhere you go all the time, but if there was or there was a phone that *could* be hacked for privacy I'd pay extra for it. I like the iPhone's design, but it's basically a government issued tracking device.
This experience is making me realize how integral phones have become to dating. What does everyone do after connecting with a girl, if they're not going for a same night lay? "Put your number in my phone."
I ask this forum, because you guys are a very knowledgable bunch, and will think about what impact phone choice has on game.
If I was to get a new smartphone in the next couple days, what phone would you recommend?

Main decision: android or not? If Android then I'd get: Samsung S4, HTC One, or Nexus 5. You can play with first two at BestBuy. Forget about this NSA crap, iphone or not, you're being cataloged by them.

Android is definitely the way to go, with the right know-how you can get under the hood and make any privacy or performance tweaks you want.
I use a galaxy s2, which is fairly old at this point, but serves my needs just fine. I've heard the newer galaxies kick ass.

Samsung Note 2
Get the older model and move up from there. No need to keep up with them. You can never keep up. I got the Note one and it's thin and BADASS.
Can't wait until the note 3 (or 4 idk) comes out so I can get the note 2

I'm seeing a lot of recommendations, but I'm not seeing the reason why anyone is suggesting one phone over another.

If you're on a budget, Moto G. I've been looking, but there just isn't a better phone under $300, and in fact it's only $200.

Why not just repair your phone yourself?

Samsung Note
Pros:
-Big screen, use the Note and any other phone will look like a toy
-Extremely thin so it slides in and out of our pockets easily
-Has removable SD slot (music, movies, infield videos, porn, games, pictures)
-It's not an iphone
Cons:
-Battery but that's ALL smartphones. Just buy a better replacement battery on amazon
-Need phone cover and screen protector. Spending more money but it's worth it.
-May be a little to big for some. I'm 5'3, small Asian hands and ****, still love this phone.

Cheap Place to Buy:

This is just based on my own experience on the Note One (UNLOCKED international Version)
If I were you and I have some money to spend but still want to spend wisely: Samsung Note 2
If I have some money to spend: Samsung Note 3 (checked it out, just got released a few months ago)
Bottom Line: no iphone!
Good Luck!!!

hands down the nexus 5 is the best phone for the money with no contract.
5 inch screen.one of the largest on the market.
twice the processing power of Damn near ever phone on the market.
runs on magic.
read the comparison I posted.
it shows the full specs.
If you can find a phone with better options at 350 show me.
it has a chip for every cell band on the planet.
all you have to ever do is swap SIM cards.

Just got the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and it's freaking amazing.
I like the big screen and the thing is stupendously fast.
OK so it's got a load of stupid features (do I really need a camera mode for checking my golf swing?) and I've no idea what I need the pen for. But overall I'll give it 5 stars.
BTW, my niece also gives it a 5 star rating, because the Sims Freeplay looks awesome on it!
If you're in the UK you can get it for around £450 on Scan.co.uk and they do free next day delivery. That's cheaper than my local second hand store.

I'll drop a little advice on smartphone shopping. Ask yourself some basic questions.
1. How much do you rely on it? This will help answer how fast a processor you need or screen size.
2. Are you a videophile? This will determine how important screen resolution is.
3. Are you alpha or beta? Asking this will determine the need for a more durable phone or not.
4. Are you gay? Extremely important in deciding whether or not to buy an iphone.
When reading reviews remember that professional sites like Cnet are real hard with the critiques. I think sometimes they get a little overboard over speed, screens, ect. Real nit picky shit. Compare reviews from several websites as well as customer ones.
The short answer there is no 'best phone' on the market across the board. Be a smart shopper though, as due to the vast array comm devices out there, you will find something in your needs and budget range.
Personally I like Motorola and Nokia hardware for survivability, Samsung for function, 4" screen, and the Otterbox Commuter case. Never had any luck with an LG anything lasting very long.

Do you travel so often that a non-contract phone is your best option? I have the Xperia z which has a thoroughly decent camera and stats, but additionally comes with unlimited calls and texts plus a gig of data for roughly £12 a month. Rather than going all out for the best phone why not pick the best value phone? Check your usage from your old contract phone bills and select the best phone you can get for free on either a short or long term contract. personally I always use a cash back site when I sign up to New contracts to further reduce costs.

I am happily surprised that most of the ifanboys have given up on pushing a far less superior product.
In all honestly if you are looking for fast, reliable and secure phone the blackberry z10 is the best out there. I have had several androids over the past several years and although they were great, the blackberry is better. Blackberry to blackberry messaging is completely encrypted and so far from all the documents ever released we can see that the NSA can't hack those communications. ALso blackberry can literally flip a switch and provide encrypted communication for all data that is being sent from the phone to non blackberry users. I would look for them to make that switch sometime in the near future as all businesses and governments are now concerned over spying.
Also with about 5 minutes worth of work you can now have total access to the google play market with a blackberry if you need a lot of apps.

LG Nexus 4 has treated me very well. Haven't managed to fuck it up or lose it in 6 or 7 months which is pretty good for me.

My vote goes to the Motorola Photon Q, which is rated the best full qwerty smart phone. Having a physical keyboard is so much better for texting. You will inevitably sacrifice speed, camera quality, and some features as with any full qwerty phone, but overall this is the best I've had.

Nexus 5 is the best currently. The Galaxy S5 (out likely March or April) will be soon take over as the best.
However, the price of the Nexus 5 will always be much lower than the S5.
