"German national defense" doesn't really exist. That country has been completely emasculated militarily since WWII. The US aka NATO provides for its defense.

It's like Leon Pinetta being head of CIA. A figure head who is mostly signing off on other people's decisions.

She banned Rammstein's last album? Those guys are a cultural treasure. What an asshole they've allowed into their ministry of defense.

One should add that Frau von der Leyen is one of the most popular politicians in Germany. I'm no fan of her positions but she is without a doubt one of the more skilled and intelligent people in the governmental elite and therefore Merkel's main competitor in the internal hierarchy of the conservative party. The ministry of defense, on the other hand, has recently been a graveyard for career-oriented politicians and officials who all had to resign because of several scandals regarding the purchase of new military equipment and the Afghanistan mission. This could be dangerous for her career as well, especially because military missions abroad are highly unpopular in public opinion.

In sum, von der Leyen becomes minister of defense because Merkel may want her to fail.

Personally, I don't really care if she gets the position or not. Being a minister of defense (or in any other department) does not mean that you have to be a decorated veteran nor do you need an economics degree to become minister of finance. The ministers are supposed to present and explain policy decisions to the public and lead or restructure the ministries' bureaucracy. It is more crucial to have skilled and competent second-tier officials who do the main work behind the scenes, write good laws and formulate long-term strategies.

I'm not gonna defend our ridiculous youth protection laws but this is not completely true. The record was put on the national index of media that may not be sold or advertised to minors. As an adult you can legally go to a store and buy the album in the 18+ section.

The treaty of Versailles said they couldn't have shit either...

Seriously, their MBT is just as good if not better than an Abrams M3. And that is saying something. Unfortunately they do not have the Prussian officer corp any longer.

Saying that, I want the Krauts on our side if shit hits that fan. If they are anything like the WWII era, they have the best soldiers ever.

*Yes, I am an American, but I have seen the numbers. What Germany did with what they had was pretty amazing.

even in 1943 stalingrad?

They underestimated the cold, tried to fight on 2 fronts, and ultimately lost. But yeah, when china invades, hopefully we can get some help from Germany.

I bet her biggest concern will be sensetivity courses for soldiers, where they will be trained to develop their Nazi-descandant guilt and check their aryan privilege on a hourly basis or something like that.

They were vastly outnumbered the entire war, even when they were on the offensive.

No idea how they may perform now, but the German soldier in WWII was the baddest man on the field.

Just saying.

As an American.

They don't have the Prussians leading them any longer, obviously, but what you say is just sad as the Germans were once able to lead the most formidable fighting force onto the field.

We shouldn't assume fighting ability is any less for reasons of being strategically top heavy.

And? I'm talking about the fact that since WWII there are US military bases in Germany, big ones like Camp K, which ensures Germany will stay emasculated.

I'm going against the manosphere grain here, I think that Germany losing her armed forces after WW2 was appropriate punishment for what the country had done since its formation (instigation of 3 massive and costly continental wars).

The Allies could have been even more vindictive and broken the nation into smaller states, instead they let Germany flourish and concentrate on growing her economy under the watchful eyes of the western forces. If shit hit the fan against the soviets I bet Germany would have been allowed to re-arm anyhow.

Even though Germany doesn't have an offensive force, their Armed forces are on par with the British and French in terms of active personnel.

Europe doesn't need a large standing army. Nobody will trying to invade them.

^Djemba,

Germany did deserve to have sanctions put on its military post-WWII, but lets be real, they are not the evil instigators that Zionists would have you believe.

In the century before WWI, Germany was involved in 3 wars. Britain? 10. Russia? 7. France? 5. Of the three wars Germany was involved in, 2 were instigated by other parties (Denmark and France, respectively).

Furthermore, Germany hadn't been to war in 43 years leading up to 1914. Wilheim II had never been in war, for the entirety of his reign. In fact, hours before the conflict began, Wilheim sent telegraphs to his cousins, the Tzar and the King, pleading with them to stop their acts of aggression. Churchill himself said that Wilheim II shouldn't be held responsible for the conflict.

After WWI was over, the Germans were subject of a food blockade at the hands of the Allies. Many Germans starved to death as a result. That set the stage for WWII.

Also, Europe may not need a standing military, but they should have one. The US has been placed into the role of world police in the past 60 years (although, I admit, the US happily obliged). Europe loves to play in real life social justice activist, but when they need someone to back up their threats, they turn to the US.

I've heard from a US military officer who worked with foreign soldiers that the German soldiers were very competent. Scandinavian and British soldiers were good too. Meanwhile, the Italian, Spanish and Greek soldiers were worthless lazy fucks. I think part of the reason was for the latter nationalities' laziness was that it was an international cooperative effort at hand, and the Meditteranean countries are like that lab partner who won't do shit if he knows you will step in and do all the work if he does nothing.

If German forces aren't held back by feminist policies like inclusion of women then they will be a fearsome force, pound for pound, if they can gather the will to fight.
