I'm a a very happy and optimistic person in my head, but it doesn't translate to my face well. People say that they have trouble reading me or that I look pissed off when I'd say my face is neutral.
Do you guys make a conscious effort to look upbeat, smile, whatever?
Or do you just not worry about what your face is doing and let expressions come naturally?

I have a good friend who's an intense but very nice young man. He looks like a Navy Seal recruiting poster, chiseled jaw, crew cut and all. He always looks like he's about to fast rope into Afghanistan. Some guys are just intense, perhaps you're that guy.
Find guys on the internet that chicks like. Then practice your facial expressions in the mirror. Know what each face looks like and feels like. Take pictures of yourself when you're not really doing anything to see what your face/body language looks like. Make adjustments accordingly.
I'm a big fan of Tony Dungy. Now that he's out of coaching and on TV he always looks weird on camera. It's because he doesn't have a fake bone in his body, but much of TV etiquette requires fake poses, stances and facial expressions. You have to learn how to do what Tony has failed to: how to fake looking real.
If you have trusted friends, practice on them.
