A few more JAPAN-specific Questions

1.) In what countries are the most pussingnest-getting dudes not the traditional image of the alpha male? This relates to my recent Japan posts. It seems that the gayer the clothes, the more likely the dudes are to have nice looking broads with them. The few muscle-bound and fit dudes out here are not getting girls at the same rate as these "beauty" men it seems. Are these "beauty men still going to lose out to a Yakuza-esque-dressed clean cut guy with game?

2.) Those guys that stand on a corner in Namba and Shibuya and run up on any decent-looking girls are doing "what" exactly? That's not really pick-up/nampa is it? I'm not talking about the Host-boys either. I figured they were trying to talk girls into going to some club that would eventually turn into something sexual, right? Or is this pick-up?

I noticed no one ever answered these questions. Here is my take:

1. Women in Japan often choose the style of guy that they like, then chase those guys, especially if that style is considered to be currently cool and trendy. Right now in Japan, skinny guys wearing trendy fashions are popular with a large group of women. There are, however, still many women who are attracted to more muscular, rakish men. Some women will be attracted to both, but may not admit it, even to themselves.

2. I think the guys you are talking about are trying to recruit pretty girls to work as hostesses in a bar or club.

I'll give you that you see some gay-looking guys with cute girls in Japan. Thing is, half the time they aren't even banging those hot girls. They are just tagging along as the harmless AFC friend. Bear that in mind.

Overall though, this is a massive society-wide shit test in Japan. The message from media is to seemingly be as gay-looking and skinny as possible, act like the girl's walking purse, don't learn to fight etc. What you are looking at is a very feminized society compared to a few generations back. This is Japan - the country which brought us the samurai, karate, judo, kamikaze pilots...their ancestors would be ashamed.

The same girls who say they don't like muscles are also complaining about the herbivore men everywhere. Their hamsters are out of control. The funniest thing is that guys actually still listen to girls.

The muscle-bound dudes who dress nice are getting ridiculous pussy because it's becoming such a rarity. I've seen it time and time again in clubs, bars and on the beach. The big "ora ora kei" Japanese guys that actually exist are fucking cleaning up. The foreign boys I know who are big are also cleaning up.

It's worth noting that "big" is a relative term. You DO NOT need to be huge. The "cut look" works better here than the "fat but strong look". While I was bulking up, I got a load of shit about my belly which is non-existent by western standards. Bottom line: Fat guys do badly in Japan. Thin guys do better. Built guys do best.

I'm sure people are getting sick of me repeating this but sometimes the truth is worth repeating.

Some are scouts for hostess clubs. Some for brothels. Some for porn. Some do all of the above and run nampa on top as an added bonus.

Those guys you see walking up to girls in Shibuya are either:
  1. Nanpa
  2. Scouts
  3. Delivery health scouts / combo of all 3
Nanpa guys are out to get laid, scouts are looking for hostesses, and delivery health guys are looking for fuuzoku (sex workers).
My friends love to interrupt and try to steal their girls just for practice. Funny as hell.

Some girls think having that "collar bone" sticking out below your neck is hott.
The Japanese word is さこつ and some ladies even have their ideal さこつ man.

I've only spent 2 years in Japan so some of the RVF members with more time may have a better answer, but here's my thoughts.

I can count the number of buff dudes I've seen in Japan on one hand. Just because muscular men rarely exist in Japan doesn't necessarily mean that Japanese girls aren't attracted to them, there hasn't been an adequate sample size to even test the theory. It's kind of like saying because most guys with cute girls have black hair in Japan must mean blonde hair is not desired. Also from observing all of the western guys I've winged with in Japan, the muscular guys still generally pulled more girls than the skinny guys. I think this is kind of universal, the goalposts just shift a bit from country to country. Japan is more lenient on skinny guys and more strict on the huge roided guys, but regardless a little muscle will always trump having no muscle.

Dreambig makes a good point that Japanese girls on average want a toned body, not a huge bulked body. Skip to 6:30 and you'll see what I'm talking about (enable captions).

Here's the TL;DW:

Interviewer: Do you find muscular men unattractive? For example, in Japanese and Korean dramas, the main hero is a little...weak-looking? Do you not like the macho image?

Girls: No, that's not it.
Girls: Who likes macho people?
[one hand raised]
Girl1: Not so much macho, but strong?
Girl2: Yeah, toned looking.
[All hands raised]

That's pretty sad, are these japanese girls even sexually attracted to these skinny metro dudes? Or do they just not have a choice? Places like Hong Kong at least have a fair portion of "tough guys", having a tough personality balances things out as theyll typically be able to handle high-end chicks with ease. But you guys make Japan look like all males are submissive pussies..

No, there's lots of Japanese dudes who think they're tough. I've nearly gotten in fights with several guys (do NOT fight a Japanese person...) who just wouldn't back down despite me being a foot taller and much stronger.

Japanese guys in general don't seem to be aware of the level of violence that can take place in a real fight. I have witnessed several fights between Japanese and foreigners and in every case the Japanese guys were swiftly pounded into the pavement. One thing that stuck with me from each incident was the look of utter astonishment on the Japanese guys' faces as they went down for the count.

Yeah, that's because they love to talk shit. 99% of the time, getting up in a guy's face doesn't lead to a fight. When it does, it's a surprise for them.

Wow... I've never heard of such a thing happening in Japan before.

It's funny, when I was in Japan, it felt extremely safe and like that there was absolutely no way that any fight would ever break out - even on a Saturday night at 3am in Shibuya.

I wouldn't say getting into a fight with a Japanese guy would be the smartest thing to do if you're a foreigner. I can just imagine that if a fight were to break out, like 20 Japanese guys who happen to be close by would jump in and gang up on the foreigner.

Maybe in Thailand that happens. Not here. Seriously, there are very few Japanese guys who will actually fight.

In a situation like this, they would just call the police from the nearest koban. Usually (I guess 98% of the time) it will be the foreigner who gets the blame in such a situation, regardless of the circumstances. So you're right - definitely not a good idea to fight here.

Then again, it's pretty tough to get arrested in Japan. Arresting someone almost always means that the police have to press charges (which they HATE having to do!). I have several friends who have thrown punches and even knocked people out without any legal consequences.

With this in mind, always keep your cool with the Japanese police. They might come to have a chat but they don't want to arrest you so grit your teeth and act reasonably. I have seen multiple scenes in Roppongi where the police are trying not to arrest some drunk asshole. It's quite funny to watch but there's the difference in the legal system to consider.

One friend who did actually get arrested told them at the scene that he "wanted to speak to a lawyer" before answering any questions. This really pissed them off and apparently led to his arrest.

I witnessed a fight between a brazilian and a japanese guy in a club in nagoya. The bouncers kicked the brazilian out before it really went anywhere.

Ive also seen two drunk japanese guys fighting but they were really just rolling around on the ground rather than throwing punches.

I've seen a few fights go down, usually nothing too serious though I have seen a guy get pummelled by about 3 others, all Japanese. Dreambig is right about the police, you really want to keep them out of your life in Japan. Maybe in Roppongi they are used to foreigners getting drunk and don't come down too hard, but there are racist assholes in a lot of places and you can get really fucked. There is still a steady stream of "evil foreigner caught with marijuana" stories in the right-wing tabloids and you don't want to be that guy.

One that happened went like this: I was walking with an American casual acquaintance near a local train station on an almost empty street about 3:30 a.m. It was summertime so it was already starting to get light. A fairly husky Japanese guy was walking towards us and walked right into my friend (Japanese people, for some reason, often don't try to stay out of each others' way. They just bump into each other and rebound like bumper cars. It's really annoying.)

They started to exchange angry words in Japanese. The Japanese guy got in my friend's face. I knew what was going to happen next and I pleaded with my friend to let it go. He didn't. He pushed the Japanese guy out of the way and the Japanese guy made the unfortunate decision to push my friend back. Two quick punches later and the Japanese guy was laying on the road holding his head with a dumbfounded look on his face. We, of course, then proceeded to get the heck out of there in opposite directions.
