Hi guys,

This is my first post on this forum, so I felt like I had to create a post rather than asking my questions in a current post.

My name is Thomas, I from France, 29 years old (30 at the end of June).


Currently my situation is not great... at all !! I started a business 2 years ago and I had to live back with my parents (for personal&professional reasons).

The business didn't work that much so I think I'll have to go back to the routine and find a job :/ (in my domain, the best jobs are almost all in London)


Before going back to hell, and enjoy the ridiculous overpriced rents, rainy weather, crowded subways, and lovely british girls I'd like to live an experience in an other country.

So at first I was thinking at Poland or the Philippines, but then I was really interested in Colombia. (for the Weather/language/girls/low price/latin culture).
I'm tall, blond, pale skin, so I can't hide that I'm a gringo .. not sure if that's something good or bad, after reading some reports of people living there.

I speak some spanish (3 years at school). I can understand a documentary, or a movie, (well most of it) but I have some limited speaking. (Being native in french will probably facilitate the learning)

No need to say that I like latinas a lot too


I bought bang Colombia, which is good. But I'd like to ask some questions here :

First of all let's precise that I don't plan to bang as many super hot models as possible, but to date some cute and real girls.
I'm more looking for a serious girl, looking for a long term relationship (damn I sound so beta/AFC now ^^).

Concerning the rents first :
-I live pretty frugaly, I don't care living in a small studio (as long as it's safe), I do all my cooking by myself, don't do drugs, don't smoke, don't flash money over. It seems like Laureles could be a good place to stay (estrate 5).
I would like to stay for a couple of months, maybe 4 months. And I wish I could find a studio for less than 600 dollars a month. Is that possible or am I dreaming ?

Money :
-I read that you should not walk with too much money in your pocket, (sounds obvious), but what about the first arrival ? Is it better to come with a lot of cash (euros) and change it at the airport (don't think that's a good idea- but that's the simplest), or is it better to change it in my country, or to debit by card in the local banks ? (In all case the stupid bank system will make sure to make me pay for every transaction)

Scams / taxis :
- I lived one year in Bulgaria, and over there, the taxis are scam artists.
What about Medellin ? Are there some "offical" taxis (brand) ?

Community :
-Is there a big community of foreigners from rooshv.com in Medellin ? and do you meet each other to go out ?



That's it for the questions..
I am still trying to find some informations about the town, and the amount of money that such a trip would cost me, wondering if it's a good idea or not.

As far as money goes, just bring a debit card and don't take it out with you, just take it to ATMs when you need money and I suggest you go right back to your pad to drop off the money you don't want to take out and leave your card there. Just take out a little more than you will need. As far as arriving, you will need money to take a cab from the airport. Just pull out a couple hundred thousand pesos at the airport (I know that sounds like a lot, but a million pesos is just over $600). Taxis will not rip you off, they have meters. The ones from the airport to no have meters, and it will run you about 55k pesos. To go cheaper take a colectivo from the airport to San Diego and take a cab from there.

There is a big community of gringos there, but a lot of them you won't want to surround yourself with, such as the whore mongers and dudes looking for prepagos. Colombia is not cheap if you live in a desirable area, however it is cheaper than the US, but not by much. Probably a little cheaper than France I would assume. I say go for it man. Medellin is paradise. The women can be a headache, but the headache is worth it.

Taxis are cheap. Most of the time they will run you less than 5,000 pesos. which is about 2 or three USD. I didn't get scammed. But I speak spanish as my native tongue.

Alcohol is cheap. I could party all night and pay for shots for a girl and me at Mixology for less than 200,000 pesos.

A good apartment near Parque Lleras would run you $1,500 - 2,000 monthly if you meet a few people from around there.

Really, I was there from thursday morning to monday evening. I walked around with about 300,000 pesos + $100 USD. I didn't get mugged. I have an iPhone 5 which I use regularly. It didn't get stolen. I walked around wearing a Gucci watch, Ferragamo small bag, Dolce & Gabanna sunglasses (not bragging, just so you understand my point). I couldn't do that in some parts of Puerto Rico. In my opinion Medellin is much safer than Manhattan, or Puerto Rico (where I live). People I met told me Bogota was far more dangerous.

I never felt threatened in any way in Medellin.

Women are the most beautiful I've seen. They don't have the superiority complex American women have.

If you want to game women you have to do it in the day. In the night it will be FAR much harder.

-Premiun Mall
-Rio Sur


When time comes to leave Medellin, you won't want to leave. Trust me.

Go ahead then. The best way to meet them would be through friends. The hardest way would be going against the norm and picking them up in a bar, but it depends where and how. Take a pick depending on your guts and game.

Laureles is, quite frankly, where families used to go live when they wanted to settle down. The place nowadays is a black hole of nightlife and the closest, most interesting thing is the stadium, which is probably one of the worst places after 8 pm in the whole city. Try Envigado, or Poblado if you strike luck. If you don't, get ready to pay triple for the nightime taxis. During night, there's only taxis, don't take anything else.

600 greens a month? Envigado surely has places, and maybe even poblado too. Give it a go and see for yourself.

ATMs work. There's a good monex exchange in oviedo. If you use ATMs, only use those inside huge malls. After that, stay around the mall 20 minutes after you do it.

Just make sure the meter is on. And check the driver's appearance. Not all the taxi drivers are angels here, you know.

Couldn't say. I never hang out with foreigners in Medellin. I was gonna meet some RVF guys a few weeks ago but I was (and still am) on some treatment for a respiratory problem.

I'm always glad for more foreigners coming to this city where I grew up. So yeah, come and have fun. Keep safe too.

This is an interesting city. Have been there a few times. Prices vary tremendously in this city. I do not know for sure, but from what I hear, Parque LLeras and Poblado is the most expensive part of this city and the estimation to rent an apartment for in between 1500 and 2000 dollars a month confirms this. You can rent an apartment in the United States for less money than this. I would never go into a foreign country that is much less wealthy than the United States and pay more money there to live than I would here. It just doesn't make sense.

I personally think it depends what part of MDE you're referring to. Women down there love gringos, because they think all gringos are rich and have lots of money, which is definitely not true for everyone. Most were friendly, the strip clubs are good. There are lots of massage parlors, etc. It's easy to meet women. However, it's always nice to meet a woman who is not only interested in your wallet. Massage parlors and strip clubs are good for fun. I would not want to hang around women who only want me for my money, especially since they make almost nothing.

There are cheap places and also very expensive places. The way I look at it, if you go down to South America and stay in the most expensive part of the city, what's the point in even going there? You can find an apartment for less than 1000 dollars a month. It's always good to make friends with locals who can help find an apartment so prices are not inflated into gringo prices, which can happen.
