PS - I am going to set up my Wordpress site soon and I will chose between either Host Gator or Bluehost as I have continuously read doing research that they are equally good, both with great customer support.

Did I mention how fucking shit Go Daddy are? : )

Funny how you mention HostGator and BlueHost as if they're better than GoDaddy. Most shared hosting services are going to be garbage and pretty much all the same.

Well, the GD was from my own experience of using them and their customer service (which SUCKED, they were fucking rude and arrogant)

Victor Pride of http://boldanddetermined.com/ turned me on to Hostgator and then others all singing the praise of Bluehost.

I'll choose HG probably to start with as I like the monthly payment option.

Victor Pride is probably an affiliate of Hostgator, and will get a commission for every person who signs up through his links. But regardless, HG should be fine for you. If you're not running anything that requires high performance, (such as blogs, or websites where people slowly trickle in), then a cheap shared hosting package should suffice.

Both have been owned by the same company (EIG) for a while now.

Yes he does but he's not hiding the fact and he IS using them, so...

I found this article that listed 25 sites that do hosting as low as 50 cents a month.

I found one that is $4 bucks a year.

Just wanted to chime in here.

Have used both hostgator.com and lunarpages.com in the past, been fairly happy with both of them. Recently though, hostgator.com was sold to EIG, a huge holding company for web hosts. Ever since the sale, their customer service tickets often take up to three days to be addressed. They seem to have cut the staffing short.

I'm looking to transfer my shared hosting account to another shared host, or a VPS/cloud server if the price is right.

I'm leaning towards inmotionhosting.com. Has anyone used them, and if so, what was your experience?

I wanted to make a post a while back on this. Happened to me recently. I've migrated all my stuff to a new, cheap host/registrar which I'll be using indefinitely. Namecheap is really the way to go.

I use nearlyfreespeech.net for my own basic hosting. They charge you for how much resources you use and if you're running a few low-resource sites it's by far the cheapest way to go. My portfolio site and a few little scripts I host for my clients costs me less than 50c a month. Their support is almost non-existent (unless you pay for it) but their service is very good. If you aren't a tech person I wouldn't use them though. Another good thing about them is they have some really good policies on free speech and anti-censorship. They won't divulge your personal details without a court order. If you receive a DMCA take-down notice they allow you to dispute it and don't just blindly follow the directives that other hosts do.

For anything that needs a VPS-like environment I use Digital Ocean

For high-profile clients that want good (but overpriced) hosting I use Media Temple with cloudflare.

For medium sized businesses I use someone like bluehost, hostgator, or godaddy (i avoid godaddy if possible, great support, lousy product).

For small businesses I host the stuff myself and make a little bit of cash doing it. I would do this for larger and medium clients but it's too much of a liability and a pain in my ass.

Not a fan of Godaddy. As you said, their support is great, but the product and what you pay for it is overpriced relative to features. As mentioned up-thread, they've also stolen domains and ransomed them back to users at a higher price. Highly unethical, I won't give them my business for that reason alone.

Looks like Blue Host is laying off a lot of people, I'd imagine ticket response times are going to go up. That's what happened to me after EIG took over Host Gator.

http://www.thewhir.com/web-hosting-news/...tah-office

Quote:Quote:

Bluehost parent company Endurance International Group is closing its Orem, Utah office and laying off 440 employees, VentureBeat reported late Wednesday.

The layoffs will affect over half of Bluehost’s 750 employees, including accounting, customer support, human resources, and training staff, who were informed of the layoffs on Jan. 19, 2017, according to the report.

A memo to employees from Endurance and obtained by VentureBeat says the layoffs will gradually come into effect from March through October. It also said the employees will receive one month’s salary and three months of COBRA benefits coverage, in addition to one week per year of employment plus two weeks “standard severance.”

In an emailed statement to the WHIR, an Endurance spokesperson confirmed the layoffs.

“Transitioning our Orem office is a significant business decision that impacts approximately 440 Bluehost jobs locally.

We’re evolving the way we take care of our customers by consolidating the support function from Orem to our existing office in Tempe, Arizona. Many of these roles may also relocate to our offices in Provo and Salt Lake City. This will enable the Bluehost brand to continue to grow as a choice provider of online services.

This was not an easy conclusion, made more difficult because of the sense of community and camaraderie we embrace in Orem.

Shifting the majority of our resources and attention to centralize support, sales as well as professional services is a long-term strategy for the benefit of the business and our valued customers. This decision will enable greater efficiency across our family of Endurance brands for the benefit of our customers.

It is our priority to ensure a mindful transition for our valued employees and we are extremely grateful for their dedication.”

Endurance laid off over 200 employees of Constant Contact – 15 percent of its workforce – days after its $1.1 billion acquisition closed last February.

Bump to find out if anyone is using http://www.webhostinghub.com/hosting-plans or inmotionhosting.com, and if so, what's your thoughts on them?

Heads up for anyone interested in a cloud platform. Google just sent me an email, they're currently running a promo for their Cloud Platform that gives you 60 days free trial with no auto-renew billing, plus a $300 bill credit towards the services. Not a bad deal if you're looking for that type of system for their hosting.

https://cloud.google.com/

Not for me at the moment, as I'm just looking for something with cPanel, as I'm trying to transfer over my existing sites to another cPanel host. Still, if anyone else wants to try it, that's not a bad offer.

HawkHost for simple websites, no issues, used them for very long time, solid service from day one, and of course, they're not affiliated with that EIG trash whatsoever.

Apologies in advance if this post is too self promotional...

I have been working with fellow anti-Pantsuitist Bitcoin people to set up a free speech webhosting operation. We call ourselves Pizarro ISP. Our servers and my personal self are in Uruguay, started operations this year and now we are tried to ramp up subscriptions to our shared hosting to keep the business afloat. The current shared hosting machine is a beast with 128GB of RAM, two 16-core AMD Opteron 6376 processors, and a RAID 10 array composed of Samsung SSD drives. Unlike other shared hosting operations the entire disk slice you subscribe to is yours whether you use it or not. When the machine fills up we will get another. We also do colocation if anyone is traveling down here and wants to give their server a home here.

Fascinating concept behind your hosting service. What kinds of subscription rates are you charging? Feel free to drop me a PM.

Shared hosting plans run 0.001 to 0.002 BTC monthly. All payments are in Bitcoin. PGP/GPG public keys are used for account identifiers. For support, signups, and questions there's the #pizarro channel on the Freenode irc network. At this point the only hard rule is no child porn, but if your idea is legally dubious in a fiat jurisdiction the polite thing to do is ask if we can handle your use case. Blogging alt-right/light material and manosphere content is encouraged. A large part of my motivation in doing this was making a safe space for my own sites outside the reich of whatever Pantsuited abomination might come after Trump.

On the journey to get this far: Doing business in Uruguay is a challenge. Getting civilized servers here was a challenge. What Uruguay has going to it are fat internet pipes and the kind of excellent international connectivity you can only get with Atlantic ocean coastline along a with a clumsy and ineffectual government. The international connectivity part eliminated Asia and Chile. If I was picking a location entirely on quality of life metrics, I would be living with baseball latinos instead of football latinos (they tend to have more overlap with gringos in the sense of humor department).

Bluehost has been paraded across blogs with its dirt cheap basic plan but they don't offer free SSL like FastComet?

A recent update recently will hurt your Google SEO rankings if you do not have SSL enabled on your website.

I currently have a dedicated server with Limestone Networks. Great support and uptime. Been with them for 3 years.

I was with Softlayer before (now part of IBM). Amazing network but it's on the expensive side. I have been with them close to 8 years and when I asked for a deal to upgrade my server, they wouldn't give me anything so I moved on. I don't think they care about small client like me.

Also a long time client of iWeb but just recently canceled my server with them. From my experienced, their support sucks. I've had some negative experienced with them like mistakenly canceling and shutting down my server twice. I just stuck with them since I barely need their help and can't be bother to switch host. Should of canceled a long time ago really. Don't recommend them.

I've never use Godaddy for hosting but to me they are only a domain registrar and would not even consider them for hosting at all. I actually don't even use them to for my domains as their website sucks imo. I prefer Namecheap.

Webhostingtalk.com is a great resource for hosting related needs.
