The final day of Electric Zoo has been canceled after two fans died during the electronic music festival. The New York Post reports that four others were hospitalized over the first two days of the festival, and that police believe the incidents to be connected to the drug MDMA.

"During the first two days of the Electric Zoo music festival, two concert-goers have died and at least four others became critically ill and have been placed in intensive care at area hospitals," said a statement from New York City officials. "Definitive causes of death have not yet been determined, however, both appear to have involved the drug MDMA (ecstasy, or molly). The Electric Zoo organizers have worked with City officials to reduce health risks at this event, but in view of these occurrences, the safest course is to cancel the remaining day of the event."

Sunday's lineup would have included Sebastian Ingrosso, Steve Aoki, Diplo, and Zedd among others. A statement regarding the cancellation appeared this morning on the festival's website. "The founders of Electric Zoo send our deepest condolences to the families of the two people who passed away this weekend," the statement said. "Because there is nothing more important to us than our patrons, we have decided in consultation with the New York City Parks Department that there will be no show today."

Deaths at EDM festivals get SO much media coverage that really isn't deserved. I have strong feelings about this subject.

Festivals like Electric Zoo and EDC (I was at EDC 2010 in LA when the girl died) boast 100k plus in attendance.

Everybody is high on MDMA. For the sake of this post, I'll conservatively say that 75% of people are on drugs.

6 hospitalized people per 75,000 (100k total people in the case of E-Zoo) is damn small. According to that math, .008% of people "overdosed."


How dangerous is the drug, really? Especially when compared to alcohol?

Long as your smart about staying hydrated and not over heating MDMA is pretty harmless unless by chance you have some crazy underlying rare medical condition like a few of the SMALL number of MDMA deaths have had.
There was a time in my life me an my mates were popping pills like pez and not once did anything medically scury happen.. as goes with every other MDMA user I crossed paths with who no harm ever came to them or anyone they knew.

NOW I did get some "bad molly" dunno what was in it but it introduced me to my first panic attack. I dealt with those for a few years afterwards... worst shit of my life!! I haven't tried it since, smoke some pot every now an then but I still have a panic attack for the first 20 mins or so after smoking then come down an giggle an eat.... In MDMA's defense one side of my family has had a panic attack disorder so I prally would have had to face then eventually.

Man looking back on MDMA induced moments I shared with close friends an random hoes seem like some of the best days of my life. The music seems like it was made for you for that moment in time, the love for you and your friends an random stranger is flowing hard, HEAT FEELS SO GOOD, and such

Personally, I find that MDMA by itself isn't that great, but can be fantastic mixed with other stuff (ie; coke, amphetamines, LSD, etc..). Anyway, IIRC, the LD50 for MDMA is something like 15mg/kg and standard dose is usually about 80-150mg. Something like 8-15 doses is the highest you could conceivably go before shit went real sour - you'd probably be too busy throwing up to eat more at this point regardless. (not sure who here would do that anyway, but you never know). But yeah, it's pretty hard to die as a result of MDMA intake. You have to do something pretty incredible or something pretty stupid to end up in a hospital/graveyard

Lame....I am not saying you should have a moment of silence for the deceased or fly your flag at half mast. But saying that makes you should like a douche. Two young people died while trying to have a epic night at a huge festival. They may have gotten a hold of some bad shit or maybe been new about taking it with no one to tell them how much was to much... maybe they just took to much but I don't think that makes it a'ok that they died. I should pretty much be dead now anyway looking back at all the crazy shit I did when I was younger. You never made a bad decision or mistake?

Normally my mistakes don't physically endanger or hurt me, yes i've done stupid shit but i was smart enough to know where the "point of no return" is. If I hurt myself it's no one elses fault but my own and the world shouldn't stop to mourn my disappearance nor stop whatever festivities are going on.

When it comes to drugs like MDMA or any psychoactives, you really have to approach it by walking in slowly step by step.

The first time I tripped, i had friends with me who explained how to successfully go through it and not freak out. When I tried MDMA the first time, my friend gave me water and gum and said, "Drink lots of water and be wary of clenching your jaw."

Sorry but if they were not smart enough to do some basic research into a psychoactive drug (erowid seriously is the best website ever), then they deserved whatever happened to them. These drugs have side effects and it behooves a user to not read into the potential pitfalls of something you're putting into your body.

Common sense is something that a lot of my peers of my age group (18-25) lack. This nanny state will only get worse. Why learn common sense if the whole world is padded in cuddly foam?

I can't say that I have much sympathy for people who ruin their lives with drugs. Well in the case of people trapped in ghetto hell holes who just don't know any better and have so many forces working against them I do feel for them. Bored middle to upper class people kids who since they were very young have been made well aware of the potential consequences and risks associated with such behavior...not so much.

Not saying that I'm reveling in their deaths or anything if that's what anyone is thinking - but with all the senseless tragedy that does happen in this world to people without them doing anything to deserve it, it's hard for me to spare sympathy for people like this.

I read a study about only 1 in 250 alcohol OD deaths being reported in national news as opposed to EVERY single Ecstasy overdose. As mentioned they either took way too much or it was something other than ecstasy, most likely both.

Like many things in America people dont do their own due diligence and listen to idiot news sources biased beyond belief, people smoke their cigerettes and pass out drunk, but drugs are so bad. Nicotene is more addictive than cocaine, its a scientific fact.

Most drug related deaths involve more than 1 drug. This is because, even though you may be taking safe, non-lethal doses of each drug, the effects of the drugs can potentiate, or "stack up." ie; Alcohol and opiates both cause respiratory depression. It might be that you just had a few beers with your buddies then took some pain medication for the ankle you hurt at work yesterday, neither of which would normally cause you any issue. Mixing them together, however, a dose of each that is tolerable alone could quite easily lead to your heart shutting down.

MDMA and alcohol both cause dehydration and general cognitive impairment, depending on the dose. Combining those 2, obviously you need to keep your fluids up - which is where most people get caught out. In a festival environment, where you're going to be dancing and sweating regardless, it becomes even more important to stay hydrated. I doubt either the 2 that died did so.

I'd also be willing to bet that the 2 who died were also women. Body mass has a profound effect on tolerance, among other things.

I was at ezoo on Saturday and i saw a lot of people fainting. I wasn't on any drugs but I was close to passing out because it was hot and a couple of the tents where music was playing had temperatures in the 100's. Combining the heat, drugs and the lack of water can be a deadly combination. If your going to do molly, get a DRUG TESTING KIT to see what you are taking. I have heard many people claim to have molly but what they really have is meth.

When molly first his the scene few years ago shit was a legit good drug if obtained from the right person. Now that the rap scene is all over it it has become a mixed cocktail of crack, meth, bath salts and maybe mdma if you're lucky.
