Yet another mother obsessed with "ignoring" gender

I am assuming by "cool" you mean you will continue to love your child unconditionally, then yes. You *should* be doing that, anyway. You shouldn't need any praise or encouragement to be doing that, much less from your fucking child.
This woman is a clear, shining example of our narcissistic society. Now, she may not be a clinical narcissist or a compensatory narcissist in her relationship with her husband, but she sums up nicely how our society & the West socializes it's citizenry.
First, is the media confessional device. This mother comes to the media (authority figure) and begs for acceptance (worship). She "lays bare" her thoughts and feelings in the article and her blog. She starts with herself, then describes her perceived feelings about her son's "gender identity." She never steps back to observe the situation for what it is - she is forcing her son to assume an identity. Even the article itself flirts with that conclusion, as it states his room is "crammed full of girl's toys."
Second, is the fact her brother was gay. When that went down in the family, she wasn't worried about gay acceptance but a usurpation of her role as the star in her own movie. As any well-socialized narcissist picks up, being gay can bring loads of worship and attention into your life. She knows she can self-aggrandize with homosexuality. She may have experimented with a period of loud homosexuality in her youth - you know the type. However, she can't deny she isn't gay, so she needs to find another way to utilize homosexuality. An aging, white heterosexual woman in a marriage is very common and also not worshiped in society. However, she has a "blank slate" in her dependent child.
Her "non-gender" child represents what she could never be - a rebel. All that unused emotional energy she never expended developing real, stable identity is ported out onto her vulnerable son. He is a boy forced to become a girl, the definition of oppression.
The point of this whole situation is to call attention to gender and sexuality, not create a world where all can be free to be, or whatever. In another life, this same woman would have little trouble with forcing extremely rigid gender-based roles onto children. She is just a conduit for wider society - and that is how she wants it. She really doesn't want any stable identity for herself because that means becoming something. In a world where you can truly be anything.
