The No-Shampoo Challenge

The No-Shampoo Challenge

This is my 6th week of the no-shampoo challenge and I've never had so much dandruff. More hair falling out too! I'm not balding, but thinning for sure. I remember seeing less hair in my palms when I used shampoo.

When I scratch my head, I get that gunk under my finger nails. My hair is also short, less than 2 inches.
Yeah it's easy to mold and style, but I don't know if the benefits out weigh the flaking. I also used baking soda once a week so that removed the grease and had similar results to shampoo.
i totally hope this is better for the long run. Any idea what how hair dye affects your scalp, even if you just use gray-away?

I'm now finishing two full months of no shampoo. Just a daily hot water rinse in the shower, no baking soda either. The first six weeks were a bit greasy, but in the last two weeks my hair has achieved a perfect equilibrium dryness/greasiness. I'm not experiencing the dandruff problem that other have mentioned. My hair has become truly glorious. I don't think I will ever touch shampoo again.

Along the same line, I have completely given up deodorant as well. I spray some high end cologne under my arms and the alcohol does a better job of keeping me fresh than deodorant ever did, by far. Get fancy because cheap cologne can burn, there are some harsh ingredients in the cheap stuff. I highly recommend spending some cash on some high end cologne. Not tacky department store stuff, go to a boutique like Le Labo and step it up. They have some wonderful and unique fragrances that will get noticed by girls when very close, way better than that played out Acqua Di Gio type shit.

I used to do this before I made the switch to baking soda. Only issue is that a simple reapplication doesn't have the same freshening power as baking soda if you're short on time.

OT: Been over 2 months since I've been on this now, although I've washed my hair with baking soda a few times in the process (maybe once every 1-3 weeks, haven't for a couple at this point). I've always used coconut oil in my hair post baking soda wash, and also on the occasional morning when I'm using the oil to fry eggs I'll throw a little bit in.

Hair's looking pretty fantastic, it's more manageable, and is soft to touch. I've been working out a bit lately, so you'd think it would be oily, sweaty, disgusting, and stink, but nope, it keeps itself nice.

I'd recommend this to any man that can stick through the honeymoon phase.

So I went 3 weeks without shampoo and my scalp got a bit itchy in some parts and a lot of small particles come off too.

Could be excess oil. Dump some baking soda in there. Work it in to your hair and scalp for about ten minutes and then take a hot shower and wash it out.

If only you knew how bad things really are.

Just read the whole thread. I've stopped using shampoo/conditioner and I've started to use soap to wash my hair. The hair's texture is nice and smooth and it doesn't feel dry either. However I am on week 2 and I keep noticing large flakes of dandruff. I take fish oil and multivitamins everyday and started to take zinc yesterday. What else could I do to stop the dandruff? Should I replaced soap with baking soda?

My scalp got atrocious, and I was using baking soda/coconut oil a few times a week at one point to combat it. Back to shampoo now. I imagine depending on your hair and skin depends on whether you can do this.

Agreed.

Same thing happened to me - I gave it about three and half months before relenting. I tried spraying my head with ACV in the shower every few days to alleviate the dandruff and itching...that seemed to help a little bit, but I was walking around smelling like a salad. It was a shame because I was really happy with how the hair itself looked.

I'm back to using Head and Shoulders dry scalp care twice a week. That seems to be a nice compromise. My scalp is back to normal, and my hair still looks a lot better than it did when I was shampooing daily. At the very least, this experiment taught me to cut down on shampoo. I also haven't needed any product.

I rarely wash my hair, but once a month or so I see some buildup from dust etc.

I use a bit of http://www.lushusa.com/Big-Solid-Conditi...US,pd.html to wash my hair, which makes it look a bit thinner for a day or two, but it's nowhere near as bad as a regular shampoo with Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate etc.

It contains Cetrimonium Bromide, which is not all that safe, but otherwise it's alright.

Hair normally doesn't smell btw. unless you work at McD where you get cooking oils into your hair that turn rancid.

Armpit smell however is another story and while some guys apparently just smell manly, mine doesn't smell great, despite a clean diet. Putting some baking soda there works wonders for up to two days, although it probably kills off all pheromone smells that might give you an edge in gaming.

Put some coconut oil in my hair today. First time anything's touched it for several weeks now.

Never felt anything so soft

For anyone suffering from dandruff, use lemon juice. Make sure it's from a REAL lemon. Cut it in half and squeeze the juice into your scalp and massage it in. Personally, I leave it in for 30 seconds before rinsing it.

The acid gets rid of dandruff and oils, helps your hair grow and even highlights it.

You can even rub the lemon on your face for a natural skin cleanser. It kills the bacteria on your face and lightens dark spots and scars.

Try it and lemme know how it works for you.

i might try this tomorrow. Im starting to get the shit on the scalp and the associated itchyness. baking soda takes it away for a couple of days. Perhaps I also need to get a haircut.

I haven't used shampoo in 3-4 weeks and my hair has never looked/felt better. Stays however I let it dry.. had a chick mention my hair looks lighter although I haven't noticed. I use baking soda every day, a fairly generous amount dampened a bit then spread through my hair. Typically have a little dandruff but I have none since cutting the shampoo.

I've been off of shampoo for a year (almost to the day).

I regrew some hair that made me think I had a receding hairline. My hair is also less grey looking. It's not that I have fewer grays; my hair just has more sheen.

My hair is never greasy or oil. It holds and styles easily, and looks pretty awesome.

Same here. Right about a year of no shampoo. A year of absolutely nothing going on my scalp except shower water. The only thing I use in the shower is a bar of soap to hit the pits, balls, and ass.

And bishes love my hair.

God'll prolly have me on some real strict shit

For the guys having dandruff problems, try jojoba oil.

The lemon thing worked ok but jojoba oil works better and is much more convenient. I just massage a single drop (and I have very thick hair, a little goes a long way with this stuff) into my scalp every few days while showering and I get no flaking or dryness whatsoever.

I've been off the poo for about 5 months now.. No problems at all at this point, I use baking soda maybe once every 10 days or when needed.

Going to try this. My hair is really curly and oily so we'll see how this plays out.

I'm about 4 or 5 weeks in.

Decided to quit shampoo because my hair always looked like shit. My hair is (or was, when I quit) very oily.

The first few days were hell: all I could think about was washing my hair asap. I also got really bad dandruff, which was not encouraging at all to keep going. Still, I haven't given in.

My regimen is washing my hair everyday with water, preferably cold.

A few days in, my hair and scalp started feeling very dirty and block-ish, as I have curly hair. I tried used baking soda. It kind of worked, felt cleaner, but the dandruff continued.

Days later I used ACV. Same result.

Yesterday I tried Kosko's coconut oil recipe mentioned above. Seems like I had much less flaking today. It's still very early to see if it will be better with the oil, but I'll keep you informed. Also gonna experiment with not washing it all for a few days to see what happens.
So far I've tried:
- baking soda
- ACV
- coconut oil
- not washing hair at all, even with water

The best look is when I use coconut oil.

However, my dandruff problem still persists. It sucks having to make sure none of it is on your shoulders and I'm getting tired of seeing no improvement.

I don't want to go back to regular shampoo and I think it is quite clear by now that hair can (and most likely will) look better without shampoo, but what "natural" suggestion do you have to treat Seborrhoeic dermatitis?

I got back on shampoo over a year ago. I know my hair has potential and these anti-dandruff shampoos kill it, so I'll give this challenge another try.

I'm thinking of using some baking soda (cleaning) and tea tree oil (antifungal) to get the seborrhoeic dermatitis under control for the first few days.

Will report back.

Tried the no shampoo thing for a few months but the hair loss stayed the same for me. Hair was also a lot more greasy and had the struggles with dandruff like some of the others. I am now using Nioxin for thinning hair. I only use it once or twice a week though. I think that's the perfect balance for me. Nioxin cleans the hair and also gives it a fuller look whenever I use it for a couple of days.
