Been in Shanghai for about 4 months now so I thought I'd drop a data sheet.
First off, I want to start off with a couple of disclaimers to the effect that a) my game level is minimal and b) Shanghai is a huge place that I've not had the time or energy to experience in full. With that said, in the tradition of RVF, I'll split this up into several sections. I came here for work and thus my overview will be from a living rather than a visiting perspective.
Subsistance:
If you are looking to come to China but don't have a job in hand nor money in the bank, you can absolutely find a crappy part time teaching job that will pay you enough to put a roof over your head and food in your stomach while you hunt for something better. My roommate is a 19 yrld Scandinavian girl who does corporate English training for 200 RMB per hour. Those jobs are ridiculously easy to come by, so dont think you have to have something lined up before you make a move to China.
Apartments:
When I arrived my company put me up in a hotel that was paid for 2 days after which I was on my own. I've never been in a place where it's easier to find a shared apartment, instantaneously, than in Shanghai. Use smartshanghai.com and you should be able to get a place same day as you arrive, lol. Note that I'm talking about living with roommates, I have no clue about renting your own pad. My place is 2700 RMB/month in Xuhui district but far cheaper accommodation is available, all over the city.
Women.
I'll preface this by copying and pasting something I wrote in another thread:
""One thing I have heard here before and want to discredit right away is the notion that game in China is as easy as lounging around for a few minutes and getting hit on by multitudes of hot chicks. The jokers who espouse this theory say you can go to Starbucks and sit there for 20 minutes tops before a hot girl approaches you by virtue of you being foreign. This has not been my experience. Likewise, you will not be eyefucked by females when walking down the street. They are far more likely to purposely avert their gaze than to invite you to approach by giving you positive eye contact. When taking the subway, I have never experienced girls purposely standing close to me when waiting for the train nor seen it happen with other foreigners. The upshot of all this is that just by going about your everyday life in Shanghai you will not be made to feel a sense of pussy potential emanating from the female populace. There is no rockstar feeling, at least if you're not 6'4 and built in which case fuk you lol.""
^^That initial impression is still in full effect. Shanghai is not a provincial dump and the women behave accordingly. I was in Guangzhou (which is a major city in itself) a couple years ago and the vibe from the girls there was much more approachable. With that said, it is absolutely possible to make this place your pussy heaven if you're willing to work at it. So without further ado, I'll subdivide this next section into 3 main categories:
We Chat:
For whatever reason I've been a fucking pussy lately and We Chat has been the one thing I can actually force myself to do on a consistent basis. It's basically an instant messenger program that Chinese girls use in lieu of texting. Its salient feature game-wise is a function called "look around" which does exactly that: find females within a 1000m radius that you can then add and if you're accepted, engage in conversation. It's a numbers game, but I like it because unlike online dating, the demographic you are targeting is ALL the women in your vicinity, not just the subset that engages in online dating. You could spend a whole book writing about we chat strategy but I’ll leave it at mentioning that it exists and can be used as an effective coward’s way out.
Day Game
Remember how I said I've been a pussy? Well, day game is where that characteristic does the most damage. I gave it a go twice and was successful twice, in the sense I met both girls again (albeit no bangs). One was 18 and the other late 20's (but she looked young enough to be a college student which is why I opened her) and it happened at a McDonald's and a Starbucks, respectively. With that said, the vibe I get from the local women is just not conducive to walking up to them and chatting randomly. If you do want to run day game, there are a few good malls that I know of: by East Nanjing Rd,, Xintiandi (where rich girls love to hang out) and by Huashan Lu & Hongqiao Lu. The last one especially is always extremely packed. Tongji University also has a pretty nice campus by the standard of Shanghai universities, where girls are readily accessible. I really need to give day game a go again or I'll hate myself when it's time to leave China.
Night game
Never been much of a club guy. The main difficulty in Chinese clubs (as in those clubs frequented primarily by chinese not foreigners) is that the local girls are either at tables with rich dudes, or if they're hanging around the bar, they're hookers. On the dance floor proper you have mostly laowais and a sprinkling of Chinese girls.
At any rate, the bigger clubs I usually go to are M1 and M2 (Muse 1 and 2) and these are considered Chinese clubs although they have a large representation of foreigners. They're almost always full. SoHo is another Chinese club, might get more empty than M1 and M2 on quieter nights, and there is a hell lot of pros there. Hollywood in the French Concession is usually laowai central, albeit some nights there will be a few Chinese girls who will tend to be down for some laowai cock, cause why else would they be there. Mook, Geisha, and Mint are some other Chinese clubs I haven't visited, with Mint being known as the place high rollers go to show off with bottle service.
There is a bar called Perry's in Kaixuan Lu in Xuhui that is frequented by Jiaotong University foreign exchange students and other young people and kind of serves as the launch point for M2 and other clubs in the area. It's ALWAYS fucking packed and basically impossible to get your own table at. It's not necessarily the best place to pick up girls because it's more of a social circle hangout than anything, but the insane level of crowding is lets you inconspicuously join social circles cause hey, you gotta sit somewhere! If you can chat a girl up there you are basically set for a venue bounce because after a few beers and a pizza everyone is heading to a club anyway.
I'll probably write more later but in the meantime if you got questions, shoot.
