Not sure how a Tudor for an hour few days a week will help. Problem is your vocal is not that big. It be like talking in Russian with my wife 2 hours a day. Sure I'd get a bit berthed but it's not the total immersion I would need.

I did one of these programs in St. Petersburg. was the best year of my life.

well pleased, as part of my relocation package to Russia....the company are funding me for approximately 75 hours of one to one tuition. Bearing in mind I already have a base of the language, reckon this will be really useful........in helping to pick up women...........oh and for work of course !

Just strated studying Rusky guys!! I found a private tutor and today I had my first lesson, she is a girl from Belarus. To my surprise when she opened the door
of apartment I see a stunning tall blue-eyed blondie waiting for me....! Such a pleasant surprise indeed.. Shes beed living in Spain since she was little and just finish her languages degree at college. Im already thinking in flirting with her but I should be a good boy and focus on my Rusky ))) But sooner or later I´ll suggest I coffee, temptation is hard to beat..

I got a tutor because Its best way of compromising myself and getting an extra motivation. This way i´ll leran faster, hofefully. I´ve hired 1,5 hours twice a week. She charges cheap, 10€ per hour so im investing 30€ per week. I also commited on studying one hour minimum a day bymyself, so lets see how far i can go. Next spring/summer I wanna explore Russia so I hope i can have some basic skills for dating. I´ve started Pimsleur but its too formal, im gonna drop it and have a look to other ones like assimil or some other, any suggestions on best audio program?

Here's a fun story: I've been doing the Pimsleur stuff recently for kicks, and playing with Memrise (for learning Cyrillic). This has been something I've always wanted to learn but I always put it on the back burner. I'm only a few lessons into Russian 1 so far.

Anyway, there's a Russian Deli not to far away and I decided to stop in. I'm really curious to try speaking some Russian. Is my pronunciation even understandable? I have no idea. The shop is run by a little old lady who doesn't speak too much English. I had been in there a few years ago and I remember her being rather cold/standoffish. But that was probably just because of the language barrier.

So I go ahead and have fun dropping some of those Pimsleur lines.

I said, "ПРИВЕТ" (wondering to myself if this sh*t works...)

She says something back to me in Russian I don't understand, other than the word РУССКИЙ in there somewhere.

So I say, "Ummm, Я... Я ПОНИМАЮ ПО-РУССКИЙ НЕ ОЧЕН ЖОРОШО"

Got big smiles right away. She compliments my ability to speak Russian. We had a nice long chat in broken English and bits of Russian about Russia, the climate, and various Eastern European foods. A lot of the foods have no English on them so it's good to be able to try and pronounce the Cyrillic alphabet. I drop a few more words and phrases I know. I ask her how to properly pronounce some things I'm not sure of.

I think I pretty much made her day, because it's a pretty quiet shop in there. It was a lot of fun for me to have my first Russian conversation, too. I'll definitely be back. Plus I picked up some interesting food.

Just goes to show there might be random unexpected places near you to practice languages IRL, and for free!

Yep, I did the same thing.

1st Instance: I started off with Pimsleurs and had a little bit under my belt. And then one day I was like *snap! there's a girl from Russia who works in an office I visit often (It had never come into my head before)*, so one day I decide to try my Russian out on her...she listened to my opening words, and then slowly and wryly smiled. I mentioned that I was learning and that I wanted to try it out on her. Now here's the funny part, as I meant nothing forward in what I was doing...I was immediately sh*t tested! "Why do you want to learn Russian? Nobody learns Russian for fun" along with a few other choice questions. I laughed inside. Anyway, in the end it all worked out and it led to the tutor I now have. A blessing in disquise, as I had no intention of delving into learning to read Cyrillic at the start.

2nd Instance: A local establishment I frequent is owned by a guy who lived and worked in EE (black guy), and has a girl who works there who is from Ukraine. Have had plenty of opportunity to practice the Russian there, along with the benefit of them working up an itinerary for me of things to do...lol. She says "the women are going to love you", which is a little contrary to what I've been reading on the forum ...I'm black btw, so we shall see.

Point being, there are opportunities to try out the Russian that you may sometimes miss in your own backyard.

These are some interesting YouTube tutorials I've found for help in learning Russian. I would say they are good to get into for an early stage beginner (such as myself), once you've completed Pimsleur Russian 1 and the Memrise "Learn Basic Russian" course. (After which you'll have some basics and can read/pronounce phonetically the Cyrillic alphabet.) Just follow along with the dialogue and then look up unfamiliar words (i.e. using MasterRussian.com or Google Translate).

I'm really not sure what the story is behind them. They seem (or the audio portion, at least) to have been produced by the old USSR state-run record label Melodiya. But someone has edited them and added music (and quick shots of Soviet propaganda posters which make them kind of funny...). Regardless of that, I think they are useful for hearing the language spoken, and you'll pick up some new phrases, even if some vocabulary or city names (i.e. Sverdlovsk) may be outdated.

The Cyrillic (Russian) alphabet is not that hard. Make yourself notecards and practice a few times. After about a few days of practicing recognizing and vocalizing the letter sounds, start adding in basic words. I'd recommend starting Pimsleur as you're doing this, and you can just use their vocabulary list to integrate in with your learning of the alphabet.

I'm still looking for a good textbook/workbook to go alongside the Pimsleur lessons -- Does anyone have any recommendations here?

Russian alphabet is easy. But unlike some other Slavic languages, Russian is really not phonetic in nature. The way words are written often does not really match the way they are pronounced. First O in the word is often read as A for example while some soft and hard sounds that are added to the word often do not actually have real function.

Pretty much every Russian, except for old people, can read Roman/Latin alphabet. Even my mom learned how to do it when i moved abroad and started texting her using Latin charachters.
