I want to land a nonprofit or government job by the summer.

I want to land a nonprofit or government job by the summer.

I am looking for advice on how to land a nonprofit or government job by June 2013.

My strengths:

-over three years of experience working with at-risk youth. I was a teacher's aid for an alternative school.
-College degree with a high GPA.
-Consistent work experience, from teaching to clerical work, even food service industry experience.
-I'm currently employed (substitute teacher for Hillsborough county and I sling pizzas on the side).

Weaknesses:

-no experience managing or doing any kind of fundraising for a nonprofit.
-no experience in government work at all.
-got a record (misdemeanor conviction from over ten years ago-out of state). Got a reckless driving conviction in 2010.

Everything tells me nonprofit is the way to go...

I heard getting a government job could take forever, so I am better off looking for a nonprofit. I still want to throw my hat in the ring in getting a government job, even if I have a very low success rate in obtaining a position.

Off the top of my head, I figure places like YMCA and Boys And Girls club would be big for me given my experience. I can imagine summer camps will be begging for male counselors come June. Also, I know immigration is about to explode once Obama puts a path towards citizenship for all the illegal immigrants so that should be a good place to look.

Any advice you guys can give me (tips, good things to highlight in my resume, list of nonprofit companies I can apply to)?

Hell, I'll even be the guy that takes the money out of the meter. I'm not picky!

My job search starts March 1st!

This may seem simple, but search for the local pages of nonprofits in your area that you'd be interested in working for, and scour for a "Careers" page. If they don't have one, send an email inquiring about employment.

Fed would honestly take at least 4 months, probably closer to 8 or 9.

I want to land a nonprofit or government job by the summer.

I got my nonprofit job when an older woman (35-40) at a bar from a woman who beckoned me over and flirted with me. By the end of the conversation she had given me a job offer.

I didn't do anything special. I was just gaming at the bar, as on any other regular night, but that night I was particularly on fire because lots of girls were hitting on me.

So I got ridiculously lucky.

What I've noticed from within a nonprofit, however: it's dominated by females. Must be at least 75% women. And of the men, only half are white, so white men are something under 15% of the population.

And here's the other kicker: Most of the men who worked at these non-profits were the most beta of the beta males, guys who have been working there for over 7 years, or they were alpha males (such as yours truly) who got hired because the women at the workplace wanted attractive men in the office with them.

If I wanted to get another nonprofit job, I'd go hang at bars with older cougar women and make friendly small talk until I found one who said she worked at a nonprofit. Then I would tell her I had no job, no plans for the future, and I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life. Then hopefully she gives me an offer for a job.

Worked for me once, might work again!

Alright, updated my resume, printed out a list of over 100 nonprofit companies in the Tampa Bay area, made my "100" job leads list. I think this week is all about laying the foundation.

I got a 60 hour work week next week so my job search will be slow down.

The week after is spring break so I have plenty of time to exhaust my options in regards to getting job leads, cold calling, etc.

Now I need a good sales pitch.

Can I just that you do not simply spam resumes. That is not an effective technique.

LoL. Sorry bro. Not saying it's impossible, but I moved to Tampa probably 6 months before you from DC. I had over 6 years of government type work experience. I couldn't find a job for the life of me except in food service, so I packed my bags and went back to DC after a year of horrible luck and a bruised ego. Got a job in 2 weeks after I returned. If that's the work you want to pursue, you should consider DC because of the strong job market here. You can get a job and then fly to Tampa to hang out on weekends. God I miss that area because of there being no sausage fests like I find here every weekend. Good luck.

Heh, no problem. Thanks for your reply.

I will have to tough it out in Tampa and see what bites. I have some factors working for me so I can manage. I sub teach now which ain't so bad.

I have to embrace long odds since that is a given in almost everything I want to do career wise.

Take state civil service tests where you are.

Do it regardless of where you think you'll be or what you think you want to do. Leaves the opportunity open in case you want or need it.

I am seeking employment in Oslo, Norway. Any assistance is appreciated.

The one thing you've got really wrong is the time frame.

I was in an in-demand field where the State I worked in was court-mandated to hire my profession.

It still took them 8 months to actually get me working.

Think more like 12-24 months to get a State job.

But once you get it you are really in a good situation, at least in California.

Hear all those people talkling about how the pensions won't pay?
Sour grapes. Where's their defined benefit pension? Oh, you don't have one? No wonder you're pissed.[Image: tard.gif]

I would be too. But instead I collect. Nay-sayers are reduced to howliong "it won't last !!" . Well, I got my money last week.. nothing lasts forever including me.

Calif State pension fund sitting on 200 billion plus.

State's budget is balanced because the people are smart enough to vote for increased taxes.

It's nice to be in the land of fruit and nuts. We're the nerd geeks everyone laughed at in junior high. Who's laughing now.

Take that, red state b+tches. But don't be too angry at us Blue State Libruls, we send you 50 billion a year.
We're all in this together. When China invades we'll be running around on dirt bikes sabotaging shit together.

That's why you have to start taking civil service tests NOW. Regardless of whether you will or think you will take the job, you have to set yourself up so that you have the option, months from now, when they start contacting you to see if you're available. If you decide you don't want the job, no big deal. But if you end up needing/wanting a job and haven't taken any tests, you're setting yourself back by months or years.

It can work depending on how you define spam.

I had a health care degree, and while sort of stranded in a state looked up all the clinics in that state that used my services and faxed them resumes. There were like 30 of them and I got two job offers. Granted that is not total spam, there was some reasonable expectation of relevance.

I remember reading somewhere that 80? 90? per cent of jobs are never advertised. If you just get in right when they realize they need someone it will look like kismet to them and they can call you and save a lot of work.
