What part of Manhattan should I live in?

22 years old and I'm planning on moving there this summer for work. Any suggestions? I am thinking West Village, Chelsea, Upper East Side, or Midtown East.

Which area for good nightlife? (mainly bars) Any other fellow NYCers want to contribute some insight?

You'd have to give us a budget.

$1,500 a month for rent.

If you're planning on living alone, your only shot is a studio on the Upper East Side with your budget. You may be able to afford one of the other neighborhoods you mentioned with one or more roommates.

I'm thinking about a roommate situation. I'm leaning towards Chelsea but Ive read mixed things about that area.

Anyone know where the European girls tend to party/live at in Manhattan?

I would say SoHo, then Chelsea, then East Village, then Lower East Side. This is all assuming that you could do it on your budget and roommate situation.

What are your thoughts on 1OAK? I used to see a girl (we are still friends) that tends to party there and other nice clubs, so I am hoping she'd be a good way to introduce me to her other friends and help me get into these upscale clubs. Although I'd rather meet new girls in the city not ones I know or are connected to girls I know.

Had an ex on 60th and 1st that had a nice studio for $1600.

"...it's the quiet cool...it's for someone who's been through the struggle and come out on the other side smelling like money and pussy."

"put her in the taxi, put her number in the trash can"

That's Queens money.

And bumping a thread after 45 min is frowned upon at this forum.

What do you guys think about the LES? I hear that it has a lot of young people, great ratio, and the most bars per square feet anywhere. I know the housing stock is rundown but other than that, is there any other downsides of it?

yea. I'd use my savings to pay for my rent and then use my salary (70k) to pay for my living expenses

Chelsea is the gayist neighborhood in America outside of San Francisco. Upper East side, hoboken, and my favorite Brooklyn (where I live)

LES is ugly but "hipster" up and coming. If you are in business/finance I would hit the upper east side, if you are computer tech then maybe LES or def brooklyn.

I could help you out, give some more details. If you own a car? forget about manhattan, or sell it.

It depends on what kinds of girls you want to meet. I agree that the UES is good and also cheap now.
LES is fun and lots of divey (but not actually dive bars). Williamsburg is also fun, that's where I'd choose at your age.
Lots of hipster chicks but also other types of girls there.
I live in Gramercy so it's close to Murrary Hill, LES and close to alot of stuff.
The average rental price (per unit not person) is $3800 now according to the NY Times. Do you plan to get a roommate?
