I can't comment much on Delray G but I suggest you look at Boca which is dirt close and more your scene I'd bet.

I've posted up some info on it before but pm me if you've got any specific questions

Atlantic Blvd, East of Swinton all the way to the ocean (half mile walk) is where it's at. Parking sucks. Plenty of places to check out, bars and restaurants aplenty.

Cool.

Can you name some names?

The only two names that I can name are:

Bull Bar
The Office

But it's been awhile (over a year) since I've been to those places. Seriously, it's just a matter of walking east from Swinton and checking out different places to find one that you think is best. It's not like Miami because Delray attracts the younger folks from Palm Beach.

The bars/restaurants come and go with remarkable speed.

But there are so many others. Hit up Google streetview to get a sense of the place.

If the weather is warm (it usually is), you can literally stand in front of a busy place and just say hello to all the passing talent and see what you can attract.

As for hotels, the Marriot at the corner of A1A and Atlantic is good and occasionally there are deals to be had. A hundred yards west (on the other side of the street) is another hotel (I forget the name) that is rated well.

When you get into town, shoot me a pm (or email me - address is on my blog) and we can meet up after work. I work in north Boca Raton, very close to Delray.

I've been inside the Marriott and it looks like a nice hotel, although I've never stayed there. I went there for brunch on Christmas with some of my family about two years ago. There was tons of talent at that brunch.

Is there anything "can't miss" or world class?

No, it's a beachside community. Nothing too high-end. It's kind of like an orange county town in California. A little more low key than the major metros in the area, but still lots of fun. Boston's on the beach is a good bar though (Newly remodeled as well). Delray was rated as the most fun small city in the U.S. a while back.

Civilize the mind but make savage the body.

This is a good observation. As for the Marriot, I've stayed there, it's good.

Thanks for your help, but what does this mean?

Laguna Beach?

Newport?

CDM?

Huntington Beach?

San Clemente?

The way you are describing it makes it sound like none of those.

I went out in Delray several years ago. There were a bunch of small bars on Atlantic Avenue, including one decently sized night club. Forgot the name but what was cool was that it was partly outdoors. I remember meeting a fair number of tourists from Europe, Canada and elsewhere.

I remember a place called Dada on the west side of the nightlife area. It's a house converted into a bar/lounge/restaurant.

When everything closes at 2 am, you can head west (by car) to a bar called "The Ugly Mug". It's sort of a biker bar but I found normal people there too. It's open until 5 am I think.

I was passing through Delray a few months ago and I saw next to Boston's there's a new place called the Sandbar which was pretty busy during the day. But most of the nightlife will be on Atlantic Avenue near the train tracks (east of Swinton).

I enjoyed Delray but if it's not enough for you, 45 minutes north of Delray you have Palm Beach, and 45 minutes south you have Ft Lauderdale.

I stayed here once. It's nice enough, on the beach. It's maybe a 30 minute walk to Atlantic Avenue's main nightlife area. Just a few mins by car.

Delray Beach, Florida

I wanted to report back on Delray Beach, Florida.

I happened to go there during St. Patrick's day weekend, and who knew?

Delray is home to the largest St. Patrick's day celebration this side of Hell's Kitchen; close off the streets, parade, the whole nine.

Even though I am half Irish, I really can't stand St. Patrick's day, so I beelined it out of Delray after a night as I didn't want to get stuck in Delray behind all the parade lines.

Some thoughts on Delray:

- Because of St. Patrick's, I don't think I got an accurate feel for the place.

- Of what I did see, Delray is very "America" and not like Miami or Miami Beach. Fat people, early nightlife, early dinner times etc.

- I was going there for a little reconnaissance to see if my parents would want to move there. I am not sure they would dig it.

- Since this trip was not for me, I rolled up with a fly Cubana. When we went out at night, we stuck out heavy. I was dressed fresh, but not full Suited Down. Blazer, V-Neck and Slacks. But real sinister. She was all high heels and form fitting dress. Like I said, we stuck out, everyone was looking at us.

- Cabs are hard to come by in this town. The place is not really for me.

- Didn't see to many fly girls. More older people. Atlantic Grill had some pretty decent grinds, and was open later, which was a godsend, but the crowd was pretty old. Like some in their 60's and 70's. But people were cool. Some older cats were busting some dope dance moves. Older cats are cool in my book.

- The beach is pretty nice, although not as nice as South Beach. They are doing some sand reconstruction as well which messed up the aesthetics. Should be done soon though. I heard the waves are better in this area than down south as well. There are some nice canal type waterways that you see all over Florida. Real Estate prices didn't seemed pretty cheap at least by California standards.

- At night, I was walking with the Cubana, and it seemed like some guys were going to front on me (could be my California street paranoia) but they generally were cool. A couple of cats who I thought were going to be trouble sincerely complimented me on my Jacket.

- All in all, Delray seems like a nice little town although like I said, it is very much "America". Fatter people, worse dressed, early nightlife. There isn't a lot for me here. Since I spent so little time here I am far from an expert, but I didn't see a lot that would make me want to go back.

Sounds about right.

I bought my first car from a Volvo dealership in Delray Beach back in 2004 - I remember thinking that place was lame.

gmanifesto, yeah, there are lots of old retired people in Delray and a lot of bars cater to this older crowd. That said, local young girls in Delray can be pretty hot, if you can find a bar or club that caters to a younger crowd.

I forgot to tell you, but a car is highly recommended -- for basically any city in Florida. Even though you can walk around Atlantic Ave, having a car is the way to go.

It's changed a lot since then. It's still a small town, but I wouldn't use the word lame to describe Delray.

Yeah, I have actually met some fly girls from Delray in Miami.

I meet fly girls from all over the world in Miami - no need to leave this city for that town...

yeah, I'm a bit biased because I'm a man that has spent his whole life in either LA or Miami. It couldn't possibly be as bad as I recall it to be, but that is something I will primarily attribute to the fact that now, at this point in my life, I refuse to have a bad time anywhere.

Damn, when I get back from my summer travels, I now realise I should fix up my streetcars and do some recon on the towns outside Miami.
