I watched The Place Beyond the Pines the other day. It was weird. Not sure I liked it.

Nonpareil Reviews: The movies he watched on his 16-hour flight.

1) Django Unchained: Featured solid performances throughout by everyone (Leo Dicaprio and Christopher Waltz especially were beasts), lots of good action and that classic Tarantino dialogue, but a few issues;

1) It's about a freeman and a bounty hunter who kill white slavers and such...replace 'white slaver' (specifically the 'white' guy part) with...well almost any other group and no one shuts up about it, though not an issue with the film as much as its an issue with the times.

2) I'd really like Quentin Tarantino to take a risk again (and no, penning a script where the word 'nigger' is used 437 times does not qualify as taking a risk); ever since basically Pulp Fiction, what he's been doing is taking a pre-existing story, adding a bit of dialogue and a lot of violence and passing it off as his own. I'd love to see him make something that isn't just a homage or a pastiche.

3) The music was outstanding, but is it just me, or was it too loud at times?

4) I felt like it ran about 20 minutes too long.

Even still, cool flick, great performances, enough gore to satisfy anyone and a good soundtrack. B+

2) Skyfall: Definitely not as good as Casino Royale, despite the reviews and all that, but some good action sequences (the opening on the train, the chase through the London Underground, the conclusion) and a good hook (Bond is rusty after going AWOL), but again a few complaints;

1) It's 007: Skyfall, not M: Skyfall. In how many of the classic bond movies does M have more than ten lines of dialogue? Dame Judy wore out her welcome as M after Goldeneye as far as I'm concerned.

2) The movie hit a brick wall as soon as Javier Bardem appeared...when a movie hits the skids as soon as an Academy Award winning actor appears, you know something is wrong.

3) Adele won an award for a totally unmemorable theme song...because she's fat.

Not as good as Django, but with some good parts, though largely a victim of it's own hype. B-

3) The Avengers: This movie had more hype than Django and Skyfall put together, and unlike those two, the reasons I was left wanting weren't structural, they were all about personnel:

I never got on the Joss Whedon hype train; I can see why some people like him, but he's just not for me, and for all the flack that Michael Bay catches, I feel like Michael Bay and Joss Whedon are two sides of the same coin; Michael Bay makes big, stupid movies for teenage boys, and Joss Whedon makes big, stupid movies for teenage girls.

1) The Joss Whedon Character Creator: Let's see, we have a borderline-campy beta male villain who couldn't take over anything, let alone the world (Loki), the straight-man hero with less personality than a cold bowl of chicken noodle soup (Captain America) and the token chick who can kick the asses of any and all male comers (Black Widow). EVERY SINGLE ONE of Whedon's projects features these exact same archetypes, and they are tiresome.

2) Pithy humor and one-liner snark: At least eight scenes in the movie are underscored with an unnecessary and snarky one-liner from one of the characters.

Despite that, it makes a C+ because of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Scarlett Jo in a bodysuit, and of course the awesome final battle sequence.

4) Cloud Atlas: The Wachowski Brothers (right, sorry...one of them decided to turn his cock into a vagina, so it's just 'The Wachowskis' now...) did not have an enviable task making this into a movie, but first it was about a colony in the pacific, then I fell asleep after 20 minutes...then it was about some publisher on the run from the law, and then I fell asleep again...and in the end it was about Tom Hanks and Halle Berry fighting people on Easter Island? I fell asleep three times, during three totally unrelated, disparate stories, none of which featured excellent acting or setpieces...Just what the fuck? D-.

1. Trade - similar to taken, less Hollywood, slower.

2. El Medico: The Cubaton Story ... about a doctor who is becoming a reggaeton star and battling his desires to go against his families wishes and focus on his music. (True story). I don't think this film would be viewed as a good film by most but it's a good / interesting watch for those interested in Cuba.

Absolutely hear you on The Thin Red Line. Perhaps one of two or three of the best war films ever made. Of course including Schindler's List.

The wisdom Malick put into Thin Red Line is breathtaking. Also a pure visual feast for the eyes. Beautifully shot movie.

Matrix Reloaded - I liked it more than the first just because of the action. It's a good popcorn movie if you got a nice sized flat screen and stereo hooked up. I doubt I'll ever check it out again but I want to see the third one now.

I also think Letters From Iwo Jima is really underrated. It's interesting seeing that the Japanese in that movie are not the maniac lunatics that a lot of films portray them as, eventhough there is some truth to that.

I had someone ask me recetly if I was stranded somewhere and had three movies with me, what they would be. My choices were, which were based on more entertainment than quality were:

The Expendables 2: I thought the first one was good, but this movie kicked so much ass, and was so entertaining from the start that it really blew the first one away. I hate it when movies aren't honest, and they don't embrace what they are. This movie, from the beginning, told everyone in the audience, ok, you're getting exactly what you think you're getting from a movie with Sly, Arnold, Lundgren, etc.


Apocalypse Now: I consider it to be the best movie ever made. I want to explain it, but I find it to be so complex that its impossible. If you haven't seen it, take an afternoon or evening off and watch it. It took me a couple times seeing it though to understand it, so be prepared for that. But it's a rare movie that does not become boring after repeated viewings. And Marlon Brando, who might be the best actor ever, is just the best.

Alien: It is a toss up for me what is scarier, this or The Exorcist, but for me Alien is it. I can't imagine walking into this film in the 70's not knowing what to expect, as there had been nothing really like it until then. It's different now because everyone has seen those bullshit AvP movies. But regardless, the dinner scene is just crazy. I watched it in a lecture hall a couple weeks ago and I still jumped out of my seat.

I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey a while back and wasn't that impressed. I read a bunch of things online explaining the ending and breaking down what everything symbolizes throughout the movie but that didn't change my mind.

In the last two or three weeks I watched The Rock, The Abyss, Black Hawk Down and Pain and Gain.

Pain and gain was pretty funny and a lot darker than I thought it would be. Mark Wahlberg is massive, and even though Ed Harris is getting old he's still awesome.

Watched Pain and Gain on Sunday. Walked out during the middle. I did enjoy it a bit but started to lose my attention. The only reason I walked out was because I had dropped my motorcycle an hour earlier and my leg started hurting. I think it was cool. Will download tonight haha.

I thought Black Hawk Down was far superior to The Thin Red Line.

Don't get me wrong, Malick is a great film maker and overall I thought it was good, but it doesn't compare.

Finally watched Django Unchained last night. Solid, entertaining movie but 20 minutes too long.

One thing that irked me was the attitude of Jamie Foxx's attitude when he was on Candyland. After a while it got annoying that he kept on almost drawing his gun when he first saw that his wife was being punished for trying to escape and other instances when Samuel Jackson was trying to see if he would react to the lashes on her back. I found it annoying because it made no sense. You are deep in enemy territory with 20-30 armed men around you. What are you gonna do? You need to be calm and collected and get the fuck outta there ASAP.

Other than that, no complaints.

Gonna watch The Hobbit tonight probably.

If other members are looking for new movies to watch: I saw Lawless, Here Comes The Boom and The Campaign recently.

Lawless: Old-school crime thriller. A little slow but good acting and definitely worth a watch.

Here Come The Boom: One-time watch, certainly avoidable.

The Campaign: One-time watch, decent comedy, political undertones. Shows how both Dems and Reps are corrupt. Funnier than I thought it would be.
