Can you get bigger arms from boxing?

Can you get bigger arms from boxing?

To be honest, biceps curl and chin-ups ain't helping that much. However, I've noticed when I do do freehand boxing, my arms get really pumped, so if I box 3x a week and eat 3000 calories, do you think my arms will grow faster ?

I'm thinking no. Your arms get bigger by lifting bigger--the strain on your muscles breaks down the muscle fiber, and then your body rebuilds it bigger. The pump you get from punching a lot is just blood being trapped by repeated usage, like curling a 10lb weight fifty times. Boxing might get you nicely cut, though, as an aerobic exercise.

Start doing more compound exercises and your arms will grow.. As long as you have a decent diet anyway

I have multiple injuries preventing me from doing all kinds of presses. I can only pull now, so I can't do 5x5.

If you can pull, do chin-ups for your biceps. If you can do 15-20, add weight using a belt.

Assuming you can't do dips for your triceps because of injuries, try this:
Standing up holding a rope, elbows stuck at your sides, pulling the rope downwards. Know what I mean? These rops with two ends where you hold each end with a hand pulling them to your sides. Your upper arms don't move. This is a good triceps exercise.

Screw getting bigger, cut mate and get clothes that fit you like a glove. Especially considering you're low on funds. Right? It's expensive to get big.

no boxing will just get you leaner. It's a great discipline to immerse yourself in.

Weight training will increase your "mass", there's various exercises you can do, all depends on what you lift and the number of reps. Nexxtlevelup has some good info on that

There are probably better ways to get bigger arms, but yes boxing will definitely make them bigger. The biggest difference I noticed when boxing was my back. After two years fighting I had a cobras hood for a back.

yes! it's all about the lats. It's a common feature in the majority of boxers.

Carl Froch is nicknamed the cobra because of his huge back and lats.

Question for you boxers. I'm beginning to take a real interest in the sport but have literally no experience at all. I'd like to start training as a hobby. I'm in pretty good shape, sub 10% body fat, 6 pack, etc. How should I go about starting?

2/3rds of your arm size is your triceps. Focus on them, not biceps, if you want bigger arms. But you're kinda stuck if you can't do heavy pressing movements.

I can do push-ups but it hurts a little if I do the wide-grip one. The injury ain't healing at all, I suppose I should massage the injured part of my triceps, a lot of people say it helps.

GQ, money's tight, but carbohydrate is cheap! I would love to cut, but I have lost some weight in the past couple months, I'm down to 140, so I am way too small to cut now.

First thing is stance. You should stand with your feet about shoulders width apart with your lead foot pointing towards the center mass of your opponent. Someone should be able to push you somewhat hard and not be able to knock you off balance.

Slightly hunch your shoulders forward and tuck your chin close(but not touching) to your lead shoulder. The top of your lead hand should be about level with your cheek bone and a few inches away from your face. Your arm should be set so that when you throw a jab it feels natural while following the path that your lead foot is pointing.

Your power hand(rear) should be nearly touching your cheek on the other side, and about level with your lead hand.

Every punch you throw should start start at your feet(even your jab). Just practice hitting a bag or shadow boxing to get good at maximizing the power of your punches. Do not over extend your body trying to load up with your shots, and immediately bring your hands right back up to protecting your head when you're finished throwing a punch.

Also, always bend at your knees, and never your waist when slipping punches.

Truth be told. There is way too much to teach in just the basic fundamentals for me to properly explain it on here.

You can also learn from the best by watching Ricardo Lopez fights. He was the most fundamentally sound fighter I've ever seen:

Sign up for the boxing gym. No one will make you spar and / or fight a more experienced boxer anyway. For the first few weeks you will work on the technique, stance, basic punches, etc, then move to combos / defense, or you will move to muai thai / MMA / BJJ / Krav Maga.

I am assuming you are in your 20s and have no intention to be a professional boxer

boxers typically have relatively overdeveloped shoulders, back and triceps, but not much in the way of biceps as there's not so much pulling involved in boxing. That said, it keeps you lean and you can always do some chins or curls on the side, or do some wrestling/grappling training as well.

Problem identified. Continue lifting, eat more. Weigh yourself weekly. If you haven't gained weight, add 500 calories to your daily consumption. Start at 3500, then 4000, 4500, 5000, etc as appropriate.

BE VERY CAReful on boxing gyms. I boxed half my life. They absolutely WILL put u in the ring to spare with someone of more experience if you dont know the staff and things. Its a dick more but alot of gyms in DC and Baltimore were famous for doing this bullshit. They say they are testing heart early.. Its bullshit.

To avoid this make sure its a gym like a LA boxing or a gym in business for membership, and not trying to produce boxers form the street. If you get hurt, many times these hole in the walls... wont give a fuck.. but act like they do.... but places with big commercial names have money to loose.

Just a warning... they tried to do this to my cousin... but they didnt know he was a Ranger and ranked D1 wrestler in college, whose dad boxed in puerto rico(meaning his punishment involved alot of boxing drills and pain). He wore the dude out because he could plain fight and he was in way better condition.... but I have seen guys get fuckin hurt when they do that bullshit like its a joke. JUST BE CAREFUL.

LA fitness is too expensive. I can only afford the local boxing gym.

boxing gyms are good here in London, very professional outfits. The fella doing boxing classes at our gym is Gary Logan, he's on David Haye's team and appears on Sky Sports Ringside quite often.

Katatonic is right, it's too hard to give tips on a forum, it's best to get out there and find a trainer. Core strength is major when it comes to punching power.

Well once you get to the point where you can do at least 6 or 7 reps of chinups, a size increase doesn't really occur. At least in my experience.
If you can crank out like 15-20 chinups at a time, you should try to progress to the one armed chin. If you don't grow then something isn't right.

My advice for the progression to a one-armed chin is to do something like 5 to 8 reps, two sets, of weighted chinups. Once you get to around 80% of your bodyweight with a weighted chin you can work on the one-armed chin. Other possibilities include explosive chinups or archer chinups, partial one-arm variations. Really there's a lot of ways to get where you think you should be going.

If you are honestly just 140 pounds then by all means go for the one-armed. Unless you're like 6' 4" or something you should have a lot fewer issues than I would. I have trouble going past 30-40 pound weighted chins.

I dont doubt this story, but it does not jive with my experiences. I have boxed/thai boxed in a half dozen gyms and have never ever had that experience. In that, you usually have to really earn your chance to even spar. They do this because they need the weekend warrior basic member to finance the gym...so they make it easy on you so you stick around and pay and work towards being able to spar.

truth though, i've ever boxed in a straight up just plain old boxing gym though. Did have a chance to train with Tony Thompson but got caught up more with muay thai instead.

Do Intermittent Fasting (increases naturally secreted HGH in your body 15-fold) combined with Compound exercises (bench, squat and deadlift) and you'll get big fast.

I've boxed for almost 4 years now. It's a great way of learning to kick ass and gaining more confidence, but it will never make your arms bigger.

And don't overlook the deadlift! It's arguably the best exercise anyone can do! It works about 30 muscles during each movement! Check out this chart:

Find the boxing gyms clost to your house. Visit 2-3 of them and tell the management that you'd like to start training. Choose the one where you feel most comfortable. Try to get individual attention.

You can change gyms if you are unsatisfied.

Boxing will not make your arms bigger but it will make them more defined and cut. Best thing to do is box AND lift some weights.
