Men's Fashion in South America

What is popular fashion for men like in South America. Does male fashion change depending on the country? Especial how does male fashion differ concerning countries like Colombia,Brazil and Argentina?

Yeah they do change. In places like Colombia and Argentina, shorts are a no go generally speaking unless you are doing a physical activity. In Brazil, specifically Rio and upwards, shorts are well accepted and respected, even when going out to a club (of a lower or middle end). In all countries, it's like the USA, where polos and button downs are commonly seen. I am not suggesting you to change whatever you normally do. I would suggest wear what makes you feel good, f all that other stuff. But do what ya gotta do my friend

Most men don't dress very well in Brazil IMO. I had friends telling me how awesome some of my phaded year old clothes where when I was there. Though if you are at an upscale club you will generally see people dressing nicer. I would just go with something nice you would wear in the US to the clubs.

What about in Cartagena, Colombia where it's really hot pretty much all year? Still no shorts? Obviously not to go out at night, but what about just walking around during the daytime?

Shorts definite no-go at night in Cartagena.

You can wear shorts during the day easily. It is the beach.

Some lightweight long pants is smoother though.

In Colombia, all men look pretty much the same: jeans, some trendy tight black or white t-shirt with designs and big logos like Armani Exchange. Mullet or short hair. Shoes are always somekind of sneakers, not a ugly as the ones that americans use (= sports sneakers) but somekind of fashion sneakers.

Button down shirt (especially brighter, not traditonal "manly" colors), blazer, leather shoes = peacock in Colombia.

If you see someone with shorts and sneakers, well, he's sure to be from the US [Image: banana.gif]

Brazilian men don't do any effort to look good in general.
Everything is basic basic + basic = boring.
If you see a man carring a bag he is probably gay (99% of possibility) or he has been abroad once.

Deixa que essa fase é passageira, amanhã será melhor você vai ver a cidade inteira seu samba saber de cor!

What about ball caps in south america? I don't know if this is a good thing for a man, but people say I look at least 5 years younger in a ball cap.

You do not want to get "fresh to death" in south or central america. You do not want to do anything to draws attention to yourself that shows

-you have money
-you ain't from here
-you don't mind your clothes smelling like pissysweat after only 2 hours of wear due to the heat....

-jeans, shorts and t-shirts will suffice or a standard shirt.
-I would only consider looking real nice if it was a upscale joint in Argentina or Sao Paulo or San Jaun/PR hotels...that is it....

I have heard the horror stories of fancy gringo's in brazil not following the rules, getting walked to the atm by the cops and making that late night account withdraw or else.....

Good input. You definitely want to be dressed to the max in San Juan, particularly if heading to the El San Juan hotel. The wealthier locals go all out when coming here. Even though it's a fancy hotel, every other American I saw looked like crap - all the guys wearing their plaid shorts and flip flops. NO local guys dress like this, and the women certainly don't like it. One particularly attractive young boricua I struck up a conversation with made a point of saying how she always snubs the American guys who approach her, but was more than happy to talk to me because my style and manner was noticeably different. Moral of the story: keep shorts for the daytime and absolutely no flip flops unless you're going to the pool/beach.
