Cuba - Is there a way to get Internet?

To the people that have been in Cuba: Did you find a way to get Internet in your apartments? I found mentions about a provider that sells sim-cards that allow to connect to the web, but I can't find a website.

Yes.. It's like going to the moon.

Perhaps one has to bribe some officials to get a connection. And some people do have it! First time I was there the host family had a computer that was connected. But I don't want to live with a host family.

Some people because of their work are provided internet in their homes. It can also be had for a pretty steep price for the quality of service your getting. To my understanding it's 125 a month + a 30 dollar activation fee to have in your house...if your house can even be connected to it. Infrastructure for internet is not good their. Also, you as a tourist will not have that option. A permanent resident would. There are public internet cafes for people possessing passports from countries other than cuba. It costs 6 dollars per hour. There is also wifi in 2 hotels in havana. Hotel Parque Central and I can't recall the 2nd. That will run you about 35 dollars for 5 hours. depending on the amount of time the rate will improve or be worse.

Phoning outside of Cuba is prohibitively expensive if your in Cuba. The phone cards for calling to the US or Canada are 1.60 per minute. That's as cheap as its going to get. Calling with your cell phone will be worse. If your thinking about skyping, fat chance. Maybe, and I say maybe in one of the 2 hotels with wireless but I wouldn't bet on it.

Also, if you want a Cuban sim card you can't put it in your name. You will have to get a cuban friend to put it in their name. The rule used to be you could only have 1 sim card registered per name at any given time. So if your friend already has one registered in his name again SOL. This will cost 30 dollars. Plus 10 more which will be added as credit to your phone. Phone calls within Cuba are 45 cents per minute until betwen 11PM and ? in which it drops to 10 cents per minutes. Text messages are 9 cents each. Note: most cubans essentially use their telephones as pagers as they don't have money in them. Whoever dials pays. If you want to make the other person pay when your dialing type *99 before the number of the other person.

The last time I was in Cuba was 2001 and they had basic internet even back then.

There is / was an internet cafe inside the Capitolio (the goverment capital building in Havana). I don't recall any websites being censored either.

Of course I imagine that things have improved in the last 11 years. Mobile phones were illegal in Cuba back then and I know that they are legal now.

Check with your hotel or casa particular ahead. Call reception at Hotel Telegrafo in Havana (which is next to the Capitolio building) to ask them for details of internet cafes and access options.

Of course the hotel reception will speak English.

No you will not unless we are talking in the 3k+ a month range. There are foreigner only apartments in Havana where this service may be available but the price to rent is very steep. If it is available don't expect very good speeds.

This building would have apartments with internet. Expect price to be from $3,000 / month (1 bedroom/1 bathroom) - $30,000 / month. (Penthouse North/ South 4/4 with private pool)

A couple other buildings like La Cecilia residence or Monte Carlo residence may also have internet available but again the prices won't be particular cheap. You will need boots on the ground to find these places and even then you may not be able to find anything to be quite honest.

I've never had an apartment with internet except one place I stayed where an old czech lady was my landlord and she had internet but wouldn't let tenants use it.

Usually you can buy internet from the hotels in Cuba but they often run out of login cards. SO....good luck hah
