Questions on uni taverns

This is fucking ridiculous.

Questions have been raised about whether taverns belong on university campuses, as part of a wider debate on what communities could expect from universities.

At a community forum at Curtin University yesterday, Tonya McCusker, philanthropic sponsor of the McCusker Centre for Action on Alcohol and Youth and wife of WA Governor Malcolm McCusker, said universities had a responsibility to change attitudes towards the culture of binge drinking, as they had done with smoking.

“When it comes to the culture of alcohol that’s something that needs to be addressed,” she said. “And I think if the universities can get together, develop common policies, look at situations (such as) should we have taverns on campus, because it’s not only for the individual... but the broader impact on our communities.”

Ms McCusker said though she did not want WA to be a “nanny state”, there were 5000 deaths each year as a result of alcohol and 75 per cent of the police budget went towards dealing with problems caused by binge drinking.

“And the universities can take a big stand on that,” she said.

Curtin vice-chancellor Jeanette Hacket said universities could do more to educate students about the negative effects of alcohol and could take small, practical steps towards changing the binge-drinking culture.

For example, she said Curtin had abolished Octoberfest celebrations, which used to be a major drinking festival involving up to 7000 people.

“Universities need to accept responsibility for the activities on their campus,” she said.

“I think the university has a responsibility in its relationship with student guilds to ensure to the greatest extent possible that student guild fees are not being pumped into drinks.”

Professor Hacket said universities also had to be explicit about what was appropriate behaviour for students.

“We’ve been through a time of liberalism, probably to our own detriment,” she said. “It only takes a very small number of incidents, and always gets a very high profile in the media, to damage the reputation of every student.”

Federal Tertiary Education Minister Chris Evans said universities should not be held solely responsible for all social problems in the community.

“Alcohol problems in our community start with adults, not with the kids,” he said.

Police commissioner Karl O’Callaghan, Edith Cowan University indigenous education professor Colleen Hayward and former Woodside chief operating officer Keith Spence also took part in the panel discussion.

The University of WA recently suspended orientation camps while it reviews claims of inappropriate sexual behaviour and binge drinking.

There is so much wrong with this. The bottom line, in my opinion, is that the older generation is so conceited and self absorbed, that they can ignore all of their own problems, and automatically assume that they need to fuck with everyone else's shit, inventing problems where they see fit.

The "sexual behaviour and binge drinking" is probably tame compared to the shit that their own fucked up generation went through. This kind of shit is obviously the result of a non-existent social life from a few butthurt retards, taking out their anger by throwing out misleading information that gets overblown to look like an epidemic, when in reality, it's absolutely fucking nothing. The worst part is, the community that is supposedly being affected by all this apparent binge drinking will cry out in protest against these "drunk hoodlums."

What they don't seem to realise, either, is that the people that are drinking on a regular basis aren't going to be phased by the lack of tavern on campus; they'll just either go home, or walk to the tavern/pub around the corner.

It's ridiculous that she can say herself how the very few incidents that occur are the cause for the media scrutiny, yet still thinks a ham-fisted approach in removing all taverns from the campus is an appropriate measure. At least Mr Evans knows where the problems lie - in the imaginations of socially-stunted adults.

Fuck government controlled western society. Anyone got any recommendations on European universities? Preferably somewhere that I can complete a degree in it's entirety and gain citizenship at the end/soon after.

You're an Aussie right? First, check your family tree and see if you have any European born grandparents, possibly even great grandparents, then check the laws of the country where he or she was born and see if you can claim an EU passport as of right. If yes, you're in and you can study and work anywhere in the EU.

If no, look at it carefully. The UK is really expensive for non-EU students and at the end of your degree you don't have any right to apply for citizenship; they'll kick you out. Other countries I'm not sure how it works, but universities in most of the rest of the EU are cheap.

You might want to have a look at places like Gottingen, Leiden or Madrid also Sweden might be good, and see whether they offer degrees in English - this is becoming more common. Check what their student visa requirements are and then what rights you may have once your studies are finished.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but hopefully I've given you some leads.

With my current degree, I'll be looking at studying in France for a semester as part of the French language course. I've been considering graduating with high marks and attempting a Juris Doctor at some EU university.

Thinking back, I believe that my grandfather may have been Polish. Going to research into this now.
