This is a huge myth in our culture, in my opinion. The majority of jobs available to the majority of people, even with graduate degrees, will never, ever, ever pay $100,000 per year.

I consider it a myth perpetuated by entitlement, pop-culture, and economic misunderstanding.

Hey - I'm a case in point. Started out at 50k, got to 90k in 5 years and I quit. Pretty sure in the 6th year I would have gotten 6 figures. It was not a rocket science type of thing, either. Granted, this was before 2008 - things may be worse in the US now.

As for investing, there are different strategies one could employ. Not advocating tax avoidance here or anything, but since I am a non-US resident, I don't pay capital gains tax in the US - but I do get a withholding on dividends. So nice opportunities for me to exploit strategies US-based investors would not use - for example, I would never invest in a mutual fund, as they avoid getting in and out of stocks quickly to capture momentum - that would trigger a short-term capital gain which their investors don't like. They do like dividends, which are not favorable for me. So I can trade around ex-dates, for example, or sell covered calls for non-taxable short-term capital gains.
One could surely tailor an investment strategy suited to his own situation - I'm not saying it's easy, but it will be easier than making it as a rock star or a published writer.

Why doesn't anyone want to do it the old-fashined way?
- get a college degree
- get a good-paying job, you would probably start at $50k and move up to $100k in 5-6 years
- don't be a big spender in the meantime, don't aim to impress girls with you new ride or fabulous penthouse that would take up all your income. live with roommates, party like in college.

After 5-6 years of this, you should have upwards of $100k saved up, perhaps $200k if you've invested it well. Then would be the time to set up an investment strategy that delivers 10% or so consistently.

Put 200k in this and it should easily provide 2k/mo. This should allow for a comfortable, if not luxury, travel lifestyle. If you want more, then you'd have to put in 5 or 10 years more of busting your ass.

You need more than a college degree these days to get a "good paying & good career growth/escalating job.

You need a great degree in something professional or from a very good school. Also more times than not you need to have connections on the inside or these good jobs in big firms/companies ect.

On top of that alot of guys want to have a family/kids which would mean having to get married or settled down around 30-35. Soo that leaves a small window to travel around the globe partying and fucking women. Its a dilemma that many guys face.

I would be impressed if someone making 100k per year saved up 100k or 200k in 5 or 6 years.

They would have to be living somewhere super cheap in America.

100k is barely scratching by in many places.

Someone who makes 100k per year and is not able to save up 100K in 5 or 6 years than this individual must be really really bad with money.

"100k is barely scratching by in many places."

That's a bit harsh isn't it?
I'm sure most of the people on this forum would like to be earning that!

Living in NYC or just spending willy nilly granted it'll disappear pretty quick;but a single young guy sharing an apartment and watching what he spends should be able to save on that salary!

As for the OP your scope is far too wide.

Find something you enjoy which has possibilities for making a living ,then spend most of your time becoming the best that you can at it.
If it doesn't go the way you think you can change ,but you must try.
Also, commit to one main business, profession ....too many people spread themselves thin and get nowhere.

Personal Trainer

I've recently started to work at a high end gym in Manhattan. There are constantly hot girls in the gym (this is also due to the location of the gym), and I spend a good amount of my time working out and talking about fitness with other trainers and members. My workouts are getting even better, and I approach hot girls in the gym (mostly to try to get clients.. I can't really make moves on the girls at work). I'm on my feet all day (no sitting at a computer), and I'm constantly interacting with people, often hot girls.

The downsides- business has been very slow. Management will occasionally give me some leads, but it's mostly up to me to approach people on the workout floor and get them as clients. I know that things will pick up though.. I just need to work on a few things- mostly my approach. I'm learning about sales to help out with this.

The hours are also pretty shitty.

When I finally do build up a solid client base, things will be pretty awesome. the money is decent, and the work is pretty easy and enjoyable. Some of the trainers at my gym are making 6 figures a year.. just depends on which gym you chose to work at.

Ever consider oil and gas? If so, you should consider coming to work in Canada. Companies are hurting for labour, even cancelling big projects because of a lack of skilled hands.

Its not the nicest industry to work in, but I made 60K in the past 3 months (been working like a dog, average 80-100 hours/week), which is gonna pay for my 4 month break this winter.

If I worked all year round, I'd say I"d probably gross about 220-260K, but I choose to work about 6 months and take my 100-120K.

Many of these jobs don't require a post-secondary education, I took a 3 month pre-employment course at a community college, entry requirement was grade 10!

Stop thinking about doing what you love. Think about how you can provide value.

Nobody cares about you and what you care about. But they care about how you can add value to their life.

I don't think you can accomplish everything you want there.

Seriously, get a hobby that you like, start up an enterprise or club in a city that lacks it. Say you like rock climbing.

Go to a city that doesn't have rock climbing, but you think would go for it. Get the lease of an old quarry pit, put the safety stuff in line, sell 1 day or two day instruction courses for tourists, and corporate team building exercises, buy a cheap caravan or shipping container and sleep on site.

That's your main vocation, and should break around even or hopefully a bit more. Then with cheap internet, start your online income streams.

Write your rock climbing blog, get a rockclimbing wholesale contact and dropship their product. If it gets busy enough you need extra staff, you hire one guy to be proficient enough to handle the whole thing by himself with a margin going to you, then you start the same enterprise in another city. Eventually you franchise the thing.

You have cheap living, your sense of enterprise builds, the women you meet are into your sh*t, thus DHV automatically

Its a tough question. If you want to work for the rest of your life in the oil industry, you may want to get a degree, but if you get one, make sure you get a technical degree, a business degree is better than nothing, however it wont guarantee you a job in the oil field, i got a job in the oil field because i met top top people (these type of people wont give a job to just anybody that walks up to them).

If you want to work in the oil industry on short term basis, then you may want to fly to Alberta now. Scotian gave me lots of good info on PM about Alberta oil field, it seems that there are lots of opportunities for people without experience, i dont know how easy it is for americans to get a work visa, you may want to look into it or you could just fly to North Dakota and try to get a job there.

So it all depends on how you define yourself. I am more a business oriented type of person, i see a job as a short term source of money, it gives me the right money, then i go run my business, i dont like the idea of working for other people for too many years.

(Job) ideas for an exciting life

Quote: (04-12-2011 04:58 PM)Chase Wrote:

I’m in the process of changing my life. That includes a job and location change. After introspection, brainstorming, and goal setting, I came up with some ideas.

General goals
-I am in the best physical shape I can be – athletically, mentally, sexually, and spiritually.
-I am fearless, passionate, extroverted, with natural dominance, inspiring people around me.
-I have an impact on the lives of others and help them achieve their potential.
-Game-related: I want to obtain the skillset to cold approach the hottest girls in the prime of their sexual value, for sex or long term relationships. To increase my sex drive and testosterone levels.

The ideal job/lifestyle should meet some of the following criteria (the more the better):
-Has a “hub” or “gatekeeper” function. I meet interesting and exciting people, get invitations and access to parties, events, premium woman, opportunities.
-The job/life will create habits and systems that automatically propel me towards my goals.
-International environment, including international travel
-Makes money
-I improve with game.
-Independence
-Opportunities to set up passive income
-Opportunities to be location-independent: I would divide my time between living in a metropolis and a sunny/exotic place by the sea.

I came up with a list of things that sound interesting to me. These could be a main job, activities on the side, or experiences/insights:
-Journalism: writing for magazines, adventure, travel, lifestyle topics
-Luxury industry
-Writing novels
-Working in an organization/club that offers exclusive services for wealthy customers
-Organizing exclusive parties/events
-Airport and aviation
-Art trader
-Environmental protection
-Luxury hotels
-Fashion
-Design and architecture
-Strip clubs
-Porn/video production
-Real estate
-Import/export
-Coaching (lifestyle, languages, sports, expert knowledge...)
-Urbanism
-Advertising agency
-Graphics design
-Something like coolhunter.com
-Musician
-Making introductions/bringing together people

Skills that I want to learn, do more or improve upon in the following years
-Boxing/martial arts
-Photography
-Piano and bass playing
-Writing
-Cooking
-Public speaking
-Dancing
-Outdoor sports
-Yoga
-Learning new languages: Spanish
-Philosophical knowledge

I would be interested in reading about personal experiences or specific action steps you took that brought you closer to your desired lifestyle!

Maybe you work in one of these areas and can give an insider's perspective on how to get in as a lateral entrant.

entrepreneur is probably the best job for you. get yourself out of the habit of thinking that you have to "work for someone" in order to make it.

if you're an American, the US government releases billions of dollars a year for small business to do things as simple as install toilet seats or as complicated as code re-entry programs on the Space Shuttle. State and Federal contracts. Small businesses get priority, minority businesses get priority, women get priority, etc etc etc.

What you're describing is a lifestyle, not a job. Make money, then live that lifestyle.

(Job) ideas for an exciting life

I got a PM for this thread inquiring how things have gone since I started it over two years ago and how many of my goals I managed to hit. Did I replace some of them with new goals?

The good:

-I got a new job at the beginning of last year in a new industry. Had an excellent start, still excellent reviews. It’s mostly a 9-5 office job, leaving me plenty of time for other pursuits.
-I have my gym sessions in place three times a week, gained 4 kg of mass (muscle and some fat), educated myself on the Paleo diet.
-Joined a biweekly mastermind group with older, experienced people. Worked through a Tony Robbins book with them. Also doing public speaking twice a month.
-Started trial sessions in Salsa dancing, meditation, and boxing.
-Learned some Spanish with an app on the daily commute.
-Had short trips to three different countries.
-In a relationship with a pretty 21 year old girl now.
-Started working on a side business together with a friend; a former book project we wanted to publish some years ago, now turning into an online product.
-Picked up playing the guitar a few months ago, finished a beginner’s course, I am getting good fast.
-Saved 25% of my income last year and 15% so far this year.
- More happiness, resilience, emotional mastery.

Those are all good things. And there can be much more.

-Due to a takeover of my company, the career options aren’t good. Salary is low, I am not challenged. Basically, the job turned into a boring desk activity. I need to move on soon.
-However: I haven’t moved on to another country and gotten an international job yet.
-I don’t push myself hard enough at the gym and in general. Though I respond to external pressure.
-Got T-levels tested. At the low end of what is considered the “normal” range.
-Still doing certain things half-assed.
-Had some health problems despite healthy nutrition and sports.

I want to increase my willingness to take decisions quicker, work for the things I want and not let convenience stop me from doing it. That might include a higher tolerance for discomfort and willingness for competition.

Haven't posted here in a long time, but I check in almost daily. Great community!

Feel free to post your developments over the last two years!

Very unlikely to find a job that specific.

I want a:
- Stress free job
- Slow paced
- Easy work
- Good money
- Chance to travel abroad
- Chance to meet women

The thing is, it is unlikely to find the 'ideal' job that meets everything you want.

Having said that, Environmental protection seems good (well for me anyway and it would probably be good for you too). I know someone (not very well) that did something like this. He lived on the coast in England which isn't your ideal beach location but he was travelling a lot to different places (generally your beautiful beach destinations such as different Caribbean islands). Very well paid but he was high up the company and seemed to enjoy his life, was stress free etc.

I got a job building pipelines for the oil and gas industry. I can travel the world, make big money and it's an industry with a lot of opportunity for progression.

My current job starts at $50K USD and could potentially go somewhere around $300-600K USD.

I quite like the idea of getting a well paid job/consultancy somewhere poor.... that way I can live like a kign and eventually get married somewhere where the man is still the boss.
