This is graphic, and very sobering. So fair warning, and if it saves a life with its story, it’s worth watching.

THIS A VIDEO TAKEN BY A STATE TROOPER DASH CAM. SEE HOW QUICKLY YOUR LIFE COULD CHANGE BY

In those conditions that could happen to anyone. That said, it was pretty awesome how that SUV exploded.

Insane how that SUV exploded. For SUVs supposedly being the safest vehicles on the road, they sure as hell will never stack up against a semi-truck at highway speeds. Newton's Second Law sure comes to mind when considering the devastating power a truck has. Fucking things can weigh up to 80,000 lbs.

Everyone involved probably thought it would be a snowy but tolerable drive on the road. How quickly life can change, or be cut short.

Let it motivate you.

Doubt it.

In those conditions it doesn't take much to lose control. Looks like he got a little squirrelly and completely lost it trying to regain control.

One time I was going around a curve in similar conditions and I went into the curb like there was a magnet in it.

I seem to get a reminder like this every couple of months. People die suddenly. You never know when your very last moments on Earth are transpiring. I watched that video a second time and imagined that the people in that SUV--right before it started to lose control--had zero idea they were about to be liquified on the interstate beyond all recognition.

Don't waste your time on stupid people or things, and go for the gold. Everything ends.

This video makes me feel bad that I half-assed the few approaches I did today.

I thought SUVs were notoriously dangerous.

Not especially these days according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety:

SUVs safest cars on the road

From June 2011:

Quote:Quote:

Thursday’s report from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows SUVs with model years from 2005 to 2008 have about half the crash fatality rates as smaller cars.

The article does acknowledge the stereotype of SUVs as being unsafe:

Quote:Quote:

It's a big change for the vehicles which were once known for their high rollover rates.

Remember the Ford vs. Firestone rollover controversy?

Doesn't matter when hitting a semi-truck, but drivers of smaller cars may be alarmed about their chances of survival:

Quote:Quote:

news isn't nearly as good for drivers of smaller cars. The report says the vehicles have the highest driver death rates. That includes the Nissan 350Z two door, the Chevrolet Aveo and the Chevy Cobalt

That was a lot of BS spread by groups that are inherently against big gas guzzling rigs. The ONLY thing they were anywhere near correct on was they were more likely to roll over.

Note that is MORE likely to roll over versus a low slung car. Not "likely" to roll over.

In my 6000 pound Avalanche with 4 wheel drive, stability control, traction control, ABS, etc I feel a LOT safer than about anything else on the road short of a 80,000 semi or other large commercial truck and it's not tipsy in the least.

Speaking of semis, if you think they can do damage you should see what a train does to ANY vehicle on the road.

Judging by the road conditions in the video I'd say it was likely whatever that SUV was it needed tires, as it didn't appear anyone else was having problems moving at a good pace.

Living in WI I drive in that shit all the time at 60MPH. It's not a big deal as long as you maintain your shit.

hehehe

It does seem odd driving the old ones anymore.

I almost feel naked in my 70 Olds 442 W30 with no airbags, lap belt with separate shoulder belt, no ABS, crappy brakes, bias ply tires, not the greatest handling and about 500 horsepower under the hood. The traction control is my right foot as is the stability control, which I kinda like. [Image: biggrin.gif]

To say it's raw compared to today's cars is an understatement.

Hell, even though it's a lot bigger than a Chevy Sonic, you're sure not safer.

That video was ghastly. I'm kind of sorry I looked at it. That imagery is going to haunt me. I wonder who was in the car? Any info on this? It could've been an entire family dead in an instant.

A center divider could've saved their lives. The thing is I don't know how many times I've driven down two lane roads with high speed limits and there are semis flying by just a few feet to my left at 60mph. Those are white knuckle driving moments for me. I'm always looking for even the slightest sign of trouble as they approach me. For those those in SoCal, I'm talking about Pear Blossom Hwy heading toward Vegas through the Antelope Valley or Hwy 395 along the backside of the Sierras, or even PCH-1. It's dangerous as hell if you aren't cautious.

In the US, there were more than 32,000 traffic fatalities in 2010: http://www.nhtsa.gov/ The TSA does not strip search people who drive cars, which account for at least 32,000 deaths annually, so why strip search/send through cancer causing X-Rays for airplane passengers, when 3-4,000 died in plane related deaths 2001? Stop strip searching, TSA.

Because terrorism acts have a far wider impact on society, even if collectively they cause much fewer deaths. Think about what happened to the economy after 9/11. The airlines damn near went bankrupt. The tourism sector of NYC went bellyup, the stock market plummeted.

The body count is only one part of the damage terrorism causes.
