I wouldn't necessarily say so. Brazilians are extremely social creatures, girls are often weirded out when I got out at night solo. I usually tell them I lost my buddies, not that I came out alone.

That area is fine, not much going on nightlife-wise but it's easy to Uber anywhere. Good day game area.

I know that Sao Paulo natives are called paulistas, but I can't confirm. Maybe some brazilian RVF member can confirm.

People born in the city of São Paulo are called "paulistanos". People from the state of São Paulo are called "paulistas".

I've been swiping tinder in São paolo for days. I'm really turned off. I haven't seen one smokeshow. Now granted I'm from New York & LA. But still. I'd heard Brazilian girls are hot. I've spent time in Miami. San paolo seems way off.

What's going on with São Paolo? Most of the Tinder girls are chubby, ugly, and with ugly pig nose rings. There are a FEW decent ones but nothing really above a 7.

I delayed my trip. Now wondering if I should go at all. I've never done South America. My MO for a new continent is to travel to the economic capital and live there first. Get a sense of the local/regional/international culture, then travel from there.

I'm guessing all the hotties head to Rio or? Kinda like looking for LA/NY type girls in Chicago? They are there but much less?

Tinder has gone downhill in SP (and Brazil) in the last couple of years. It's mostly low hanging fruit now, or girls living in the outskirts of the city and setting their radar for several miles away so they can match guys living in the main areas.

Happn is better for online game in SP.

In the US you have to pay to message each new girl on Happn. Is this the same in BR?

I never had to pay to message any girls there. Unless it's a new version I'm unaware of - I haven't used it in a few months.

What you do have to pay is to "charm" girls, which is a way to assure the girl sees you like her. It's akin to the "Superlike" in Tinder.

Agreed, but neither should be your main source of prospects. Online here is just scraps.

If you get the chance, I would recommend you review this thread.

I don't know how familiar you are with SP. Paulista is a large avenue and Augusta crosses it.

If by Augusta you mean what is known as the lower side of Augusta (northeast of Av. Paulista, towards Downtown), that's a much more hardcore area. A lot of homeless people, crackheads. Girls are tatted up. It's a more alternative scene.

If by Paulista you mean the Jardins side (southwest of Av. Paulista, specially between Av. Rebouças and Av. Nove de Julho), that's the prime area. Very expensive to rent. Richer, posher girls. Much fewer clubs than on the lower side of Augusta, but less homeless and overall cleaner and safer.

It comes down to what kind of scene you are into and where you plan on heading.

Personally I think an AirBNB in either Pinheiros or Jardins is the best option.

Any general tips for safety in São Paulo?

Aside from obvious ones (walking in public with eyes glued to you phone)

Is it true alll Ubers have tinted windows?

Is it worth bringing down an old laptop to sell? I used to play chess with a Ecuadorian guy who said electronics in South America are way more expensive. He'd bring down a laptop every time he visited and sell it for way more.

I wouldn't point to anything in special in comparison to other big cities.

Situational awareness goes without saying, but if you stick to good regions like Pinheiros, Paulista, Jardins, Itaim, Vila Madalena, etc, you are probably safer now than a few years ago.

Downtown (Centro, Consolação, República, parts of Bela Vista) is the most dangerous area because there are a ton of opportunistic thieves and desperate bums/addicts. If anyone asks you for money, just shake your head and say "Desculpa" ("Sorry") and don't stop walking. Don't flash your phone too much, it's common to get it stolen by guys in bycicles who just snatch it off your hand and sprint away.

Obviously don't be drunk and loud or get froggy with anyone on the street.

Avoid cabs outside of nightclubs. Download an app called VAH - this app will give you a quote on all the ride services (99, Uber, Easy, Cabify) so you can see which one's cheapest and fastest.

Most cars here have tinted windows - why?

You can probably make money. How much depends on the specs of your laptop.

You won't get a good price by selling it at a store, but you can probably make a couple hundred USD if you sell it through MercadoLivre (eBay) or OLX (Craigslist), but it can be a hassle, specially if you don't speak Portuguese.

Selling guitars was also a thing for a while because you can bring one as extra luggage free of charge. You could post on guitar player groups on Facebook saying you're coming over from the States and you can bring an instrument - so you bring it with a buyer already interested and if he backs down you sell it online (obviously pick one with broad interest).

Ended up in jardim paulista. Central to everything with my own room and bath for $14/night. Going to nap and head to Augusta or vila magdelena late night. Everyone says don't get there before 1am.

Anyone coming here needs to do the San paulo free walking tour. Last few days I did them. Great intro to sp. They have 3 routes: paulista, vm, downtown. Depending on day you can do two. Give 20-25 R$ at the end. Lasts 4 hours.

I'm here 2-4 weeks depending. Anyone around feel free to hit me up.

Augusta was lively but not my scene.

I was in Barra Funda tonight. I had come from sightseeing in Luz area. Chickened out staying there past dark. Not the best neighborhoods.

Tomorrow trying bar scene in Villa Magdelena.

VM has a good bar scene. There's a nice park where everyone smokes weed and watches sunset. I don't know the official name. It's a bit of a walk north of VM.

A tour guide said the Brazilian Havaianas sandles are worth a lot more overseas. Like $30 a pair. But you can buy them here for a few bucks. I'm not sure it'd be worth trying unless I had specific buyers requesting styles and sizes.

I've been talking to some women on tinder who have said they have (or know people) who have been casually mugged while walking on the street.

Is this more likely due to them being easier targets (women) or their careless behavior (possibly openly showing cell phone, etc)
Reply

Ringo's São Paulo Datasheet

I saw a woman get mugged in broad daylight today. Placa Se is famous for that. The attacker ran off with her phone she was yelling and a police chased him then he dropped it. The metro and bus are also famous for pickpockets.

Everyone says I should go to Rio bc it's beautiful but they also warn you it's even more dangerous. Someone said they can't afford to pay the police there.

I do see a lot of police in sp. Eveyone tells you not to take selfies. Hold the phone with two hands. Don't be around certain areas at night.

I'm surprised I don't see more attractive women walking around SP. I've approached only a few I'd go to the trouble of texting to set something up. They were quite young and didn't speak English. The data networks aren't the greatest which can be an issue if you use translation software.

I've had a lot of matches on Tinder but most in 6-7 territory and they live quite far from city center. Been having to use google translate on and off. They do seem eager to practice English.

Italian building now charges r30 to go up. The copan is still free from 3-4. Bonespa viewpoint is closed. Martinelli still open.

You can save $10 going to the aquarium on Monday when it's 50 instead of 85. Paulista museum in Independence Park is closed but there's a free zoological museum nearby.

Not much English at the immigration museum. Was disappointed.

Ibirapuera Park is nice but the Afro brasil museum has not have English. Essentially the same history as the US with slaves. Go on a weekend or Wednesday when the Japanese Pavilion is open. The MAC has a decent view from the roof.

Seems like there's not much left to do besides some museums on USP campus. I think their winter break is coming up. Several girls have told me they have off 10 days starting next week.
Reply

USP campus around butantan has some museums. The main one deals with snake venom and vaccines. Kinda similar to the Red Cross in Bangkok without the live demonstrations.

The campus isn't that pretty. There's a small crime museum in the police academy. Saw a protest near there this morning. Didn't see any attractive girls around the whole day.

The main one is supposedly going on now from paulista to downtown. Young people warned me the city and mass transit would shut down but it seems to be running fine. My host dismissed the protest as nothing. Said they tried same thing in April but didn't do much. Kinda weird that the young people have a totally different perspective on it.

Been listening to survival guide for Portuguese. Besides a basic vocabulary and polite words I think it's better to concentrate on Spanish. I've found most people here can speak or at least understand Spanish. So if you get some fluency in that it's actually much more practical if you're traveling around South America.

I was on Vila Madelena in the afternoon last Sunday and lots of people were drinking. Came back tonight (Friday from about 12-1am). The restaurant-bars were emptying out and the bar-clubs were filling up.

Lots of decent looking women walking around in 2-3 sets. Definitely better than Augusta. Women were dressed up in tight skirts with their hair and makeup on point.

Everyone was in a social groups. At the restaurants eveyone is at tables together. In the bar there seems a little mixing. One set of girls asked me 10 times in a row "You're here alone??" The translator kept repeating it to the other girl in Portuguese like they both couldn't believe it and asking me again. Then making cry baby faces.

Girls were decent. Not like Augusta were most girls look like dykes. Still to be honest was a bit disappointed with VM. I prefer a nice body AND face. Most were one or the other.

Opened a set outside Namadam (or something like that). Immediately got interrupted by a gross street person getting in the girls faces and making them run away. I don't know where he came from bc unlike Augusta there aren't many bums on the VM bar street.

Joined them in line. They were fun dancing up on each other. Didn't speak English. I could see the line and through the window was probably 80% guys.

R40 cover I guess it included a drink but bar was crowded. Went back for a piss and checked for talent. Maybe two 8s didn't look like they were having a good time. A few groups of 7s dancing with each other.

Girls I open catch me and want to start dancing. I'm exhausted; smile tell them I'll be back. They cut my bracelet which is when you pay on the way out (weirdly). Assured I can come back for free but they don't give me any kind of receipt or stamp.

I walk over to only other place that looks full. Todos Santos I think. It looks like 90% guys. I get to the cashier and peer in can't see any decent girls. Decide to head back.

Walk to first place but line has grown. Tired and don't feel like waiting. Take the night bus home.

Had some luck on Tinder this week. Skinny black girl made it pretty easy for me. Later told me she decided I would be her birthday gift to herself. She spoke no English. Was using google translate to message me in English. Almost zero ASD and LMR.

Matched with a tour guide I guess I'd had on a tour. I think she was shadowing from the back. She recognized me on Tinder like so know you! She ended up canceling last minute but left a free concert ticket for me at the box office.

Left symphony early and saw some of the protest in front of City Hall. Cops were in riot gear and some warning shots were fired. Couldn't figure out if it was stragglers from beginning or end of the protest. Apparently the presidents approval rating is 2%.

I might try Itaim Bibi or Vila Olimpia. It's supposedly the most upscale. I went down the street from guidebook (Rua dr Mario ferraz) it said something like where SP "bold and beautiful play". It was a Saturday late afternoon. Only saw two bar-restaurants with an older stuffed shirt crowd. The women were mostly post wall.

Met up with a local from CS on other side of Paulista. Italian area called Bella Vista.

We had a couple CS chat groups open for "beers" and another for "go out and party".

Maybe 4-5 people in each group with some overlap. Only one halfway decent chick who was already meeting friends at a different pub.

We went to Blue Pub which is an Irish type pub with live music and maybe 3 floors. It's a good set up with a pool table in basement and smoking on roof. You can order bar food in a couple sitting areas.

The music area has a dance floor and balcony. Too crowded and no one really dancing so much as shaking in place. Tons of open sets.

BUT, no attractive women. There were a few decent ones already making out wth dudes. Or so it seemed. They turn around and I'd wince. Actually was hoping I saw st least one 7+ but I didn't. Even if she was already taken it would give me hope.

Opened several sets. Girls are friendly enough. As a rule the ugliest girl in the group speaks English. Shame on me for that. I'd get to that point in convo for kino escalation and just be like nope. Faces werent hot. A few good bodies but overall most seemed overweight.

After a few beers. I ask the dude so honestly. How many CS girls have you banged? He's like well I banged the Argentina girl from last night. But when he shows me the picture I'm horrified. The lunch lady?

He's like no she's a good one. The night before that it was a South Africa girl. We fooled around but really I just couldn't. There wasn't enough attraction. So I'm guessing maybe like a 1-2 in my book? Girl he showed me was a 2-3.

Two girls opened us with the it's her birthday routine. They wanted us to kiss them. Now I know how hot girls feel in clubs. Eww get away from me. Haha but they were nice. She actually tried to go for the kiss! Yeah I pushed a teenager off me in disgust tonight.

3am I had to leave. Plenty of girls to pull but none worth it if you've been laid in the last year. The friend says he's staying. It's his favorite place in San Paulo. He said he's been everywhere too.

He said maybe there are better girls at a club in Itaim Bibi. I forget the name. Had an interesting convo with a group of female doctors who waited in the line for same club two hours and didn't get in. Only one was a 6.5 which I'm guessing is why.

Two beers with entry was R63. Eveyone warned me not to walk home. Was fine crossing paulista and straight shot to jardin. Got a 6.5 blondes whatsapp on the way out. Ok a 6. Fine, a girl with blond hair.

Confirmed that school is out the entire month of July for winter break. Maybe a good time to travel and meet (hot) students vacationing in smaller touristy areas of Brazil? I do want to believe in a world were Brazil has an attractive populace.
