Datasheet: Fort McMurray, Canada

This datasheet is for anyone out there crazy enough to go work in the Canadian oil sands up in the frontier boom town of Fort McMurray. It is meant to compliment my thread on getting a job in the oil sands which can be found here: http://www.rooshvforum.network/thread-9826.html

About Fort McMurray (AKA Fort Mac):

The good: Anyone with half a brain can come up here and make decent money, if you are intelligent, ambitious, hard working and can stay off the C pipe, you can make a small fortune up here. Its a city of about 100,000 and most services are available, there are big box type stores and a few different bars, clubs and strip joints to keep a guy entertained when he has time off from his 90 hour work week. If you like hunting, fishing, skidooing and quadding, then this is the place for you. There is also Mcdonald Island park community centre which recently opened, one of the largest of its kind in North America, complete with olympic sized pools, rinks, big gym, golf course, etc.

The bad: Fort Mac is an ugly, relatively dirty, industrial town. Its population is made up mostly of uncultured Canadians (red neck) from various corners of the country where industry has died out in recent years, but mostly East Coast (especially Newfoundland). Rent and housing prices are insanely high, a mobile home (trailer) will set you back a cool half a million bucks, the rent in the last place I stayed in was $3500/month for a furnished 2 bedroom condo (company paid for it so I didn't care), a room in a house goes for $800-1000. Also, since everyone is there to make money, most people work a lot of OT, myself, if I'm not working at least 70-80 hours/week (preferably 90-100), then I don't want to be in Fort Mac. That's the culture there; work, work, work

The ugly: Although its not as bad as I thought it would be before I first went up there, THERE ARE more men than women in Fort Mac and a large portion of those men are young guys between the ages of 18-35, so competition at the bars is fierce. Thankfully, most of these guys are the douche bag, Ed Hardy types with no game whatsoever. However, with this unlimited supply of retards with way more money than brains and limited social skills, Fort Mac girls go to the bar expecting to have all of their drinks paid for them. This is the most extreme example of busted chicks dating up I have ever seen, or guys dating down, whatever you want to call it, I call Fort Mac "pussy purgatory", especially if I'm staying in one of the work camps outside of town.

Where to stay: If you decide to move there, I would suggest staying in the burbs of Timberlea or Thickwood, this is where all the people with money stay (or a lot of money, to qualify for public housing in Fort Mac, you household income must be LESS than 100K), there's actually some impressive houses up there. They're generic and you wouldn't know that you weren't in any other burb in any other Canadian city. Gregoire (near airport) is another option but it is lower end, mostly trailer parks (yes, the ones going for $500K). Then there's down town, I personally wouldn't stay there because there's quite a bit of riff raff (crack heads, whores, etc), its normal to go to work in the morning and have to step over a passed out native in your apartment lobby.

Where to PARTY: In Fort Mac the people work hard and they definitely party hard, binge drinking and copious amounts of cocaine snorting are quite normal (not much weed smoking since we all have to do piss tests, but you can do an 8 ball on Friday and be clean by Monday, yee haw!).

Club NV: The only "big club" in the city, its downtown and can probably squeeze in about 300 people on a weekend night. You will actually see some pretty good talent in here (don't forget, this is Fort Mac, not some sophisticated city like Edmonton, lol), you will also definitely see fights here, the first time I went in, I saw 4 different chick fights.

The Padollon: More of a bar/lounge, attracts a decent, mature crowd (drinking age here is 18), good place to eat, watch hockey or UFC.

The Oil Can/Diggers: complete shit hole, often see fights here but there is some talent on the weekend. You'll see more ethnic people here (Filipinos, East Africans, etc) but a lot of fake gangster types.

Restaurants (Earl's,Moxie's,Keg, Boston Pizza): These are all downtown and I prefer to hang out at these places, they all have hot waitresses who often make $500-1000/night with all the meat heads tipping them huge. Lots of normal Fort Mac girls in these places.

Paddy McSwiggens: Up in Thickwood, this is my favorite pub/club, they often have a band playing and the place gets packed. More of a mature crowd and not so much riff raff or fights, of course this being Fort Mac, most guys are wearing Tee shirt and ball cap with running shoes, your competition will be meat heads.

Whiskey's: Also up in Thickwood, younger crowd (18-22), some cute girls in here, I've only been once and almost got beat up so I didn't go back.

Strip Clubs: Show girls and the one beside Diggers (forget the name) both are run by HA, attract a rough crowd and generally suck. the strippers charge $30/lap dance, no touching allowed. The make their money by rolling up posters and stick them between their legs and then having drunk red necks throw toonies and loonies into the hole, classy, I know.

There's a few other decent pubs and bars in town that are alright to check out, but as you can tell, nightlife isn't the reason to go to Fort Mac.

More about the girls: As you can see, the demographics make this place suck but what makes it suck even more is the sense of entitlement that most of these women have due to all the guys competing for them. I tend to go for the many Filipinos there to hold me over until my days off, they're the normal ones. Standard game won't always apply, most chicks here don't care if you read books, speak a foreign language or travel to exotic languages, they want to know if you have a big truck and will take them shopping in Vegas or to an all-inclusive week in the DR. I don't really bother with them to be honest. For shits and gigs, why not do a search on POF for Fort McMurray, Alberta, see what you come up with guys!

So, all in all, Fort Mac is a dump but it allows me to live a decent lifestyle (work 4-6 months/year) so I'm going back. I should be there by late April/early May, so if any of you will be in the area, lets meet up and throw some toonies at strippers!

Here's some vids that will show you what the MAC is really like: (I posted them in the other thread so some of you may have already seen them)

Aside from liquor, coke, and strippers, what else are guys spending money on?

Sounds like you could open a Harley dealership or rim shop or practically anything that appeals to the 18-35 year old bracket with more money and a huge impulsive streak.

Trucks (and lots of after market parts), ATVs, tattoos, etc. The Harley dealership in Fort Mac does quite a lot of business. Basically any business up here is gonna make lots of cash, the barber shop I go to for a basic haircut charges $25, the cheapest in town. Anything MMA related will sell big time, UFC is huge here.

To give you an example of how retarded the meat heads are here, I once saw a guy rolling around downtown Fort Mac in a big Dodge Ram 3500 (probably cost about $60,000), he had a huge lift kit on it, and on the trailer hitch hung a big pair of brass nuts (like you'll see here: http://bumpernuts.com/) and a big huge decal across the rear window that read "DODGE THE FATHER, RAM THE DAUGHTER" pretty funny but this is the type of dumb shit guys do up here.

Similar goes on with the "cashed up bogans" in Western Australian mining towns.

Reminds me of stories of the Wild West railroad towns. It must be a crazy place to live and work.

But seriously good info. I am taking some classes down here in Georgia but my plan is to hit either Alberta or North Dakota within a year and a half. Thanks, Scotian for sharing the good word.

Hell on earth lol. Props for lasting in that dump. Its just whores and blow up there you end up segmenting Fort Mac dudes into two types: dudes whom are smart and work hard, save up - or dudes whom get dragged into the 'lifestyle' out of bordem and end up blowing 30%-50%+ of their cash on nonsense like drugs and toys they have little time to use.

A lot of broads from Edmonton pay of their condos doing "tours" up in Fort Mac.

I hear a lot of Somaliians are up there now too! My homie spent a good 6 months up there.. Hated it. Lol.

Yes Kosko, lots of somalis up there now, most moved from T Dot or Ottawa for work, 90% are working hard and doing very well for themselves, but it seems like a high number of the young guys are getting caught up in the crack game and losing their lives, guys this this one: http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/2010-2011/thelif...asirdirie/

Yea man a lot of the really young ones are getting into to many silly things. My homie says they have swarmed Edmonton and practically taking over much of the trade up there. But a lot are racking up cash and then coming back here with it. Some homies he knew we're flipping condos for a few years with cash they made up on Mac-beria.

As someone who works in the resources sector in WA, I can confirm it is nowhere near as obnoxious and you are not relegated to working 80+ hr weeks. Furthermore, the money is a lot better than what is on offer in Canada at the moment (for what I do anyway).

The other positive is you can be based in Perth (a city of circa 2 million) and earn the same money as the guys in the bush do if you have an education or specific skillset as its all a trickle down effect and demand is at an all time high.

Lukey, from what I know, you are correct. A very good friend of mine recently moved to Perth (November 2011) to do the same thing that he was doing in Fort Mac and he is making better money there, although he is working offshore. So far he loves it there but according to him, the cost of living is quite a bit higher than in Alberta. We also can be based out of major Canadian cities, either Calgary or Edmonton (some guys are lucky enough to have flights paid to other cities as well), living in Fort Mac can be subsidized, based on a guy`s skill set.

Canada is very comparable to Australia in many ways, both culturally and historically but especially our economies which both rely heavily on the resource sectors. Fortunately for you guys, your best customers are China and India, both booming countries who`s leaders don`t play political games, unlike our best customer, the USA, which recently canceled a major pipeline project to refineries in Houston, oh well, looks like we`ll have to build a pipeline to the Pacific coast of Canada to export to China as well.

It will be interesting to see how the new mining tax plays out for you guys down there, hopefully your economy keeps up, I`d like to work there someday!

Agreed on all fronts.

You know the price of living is too high when a pint of beer at the local pub is $12! ($11 USD/CAD). Honestly though, it is getting ridiculous in terms of costs here and its not slowing down.

I suppose the only town in Western Australia that sounds comparable to Fort Mac from what I am hearing is Karratha, which is where most fly in fly out workers are coming/going from Perth (probably where your mate is based when coming off the rigs).

Fingers crossed the new mining tax doesn't put a dent in the market, however I am off on another 2 year global sabbatical come the end of the year so as long as it doesn't slip until then I'm stoked.

If you do ever intend on coming this way feel free to shoot me a PM and I can get you in touch with some recruiters who can help. That said, Perth is no Medellin, so you will probably do as most of us do and that is grab your cash and carry on!
