Ulysses ain't got shit on our Odyssey - now, that's a line I might borrow! Tennyson ain't got shit on OP!
Regarding the worst tourists, I'd say it's the groups of obnoxious young men on stag parties, brought in by low-cost airlines. Their obvious despair at seeing so many cute EE chicks, but getting none, turns them into loud and sour drinking machines.
I always wondered what they hope to achieve, traveling in such large groups (for just a couple of days, on top of that). Groups that can -successfully- chase pussy, are groups of 2 or 3, no more.
So true! What's the point of traveling to a country with a better ratio if you plan to travel in a group of guys so large it ruins the ratio wherever you go? Sounds like mentally weak people that can't handle wandering far from the herd.
It's a stag party, I'd think much less of them if they're all taking their wives and girlfriends with them to make sure they don't tarnish the ratio too much.
They're obnoxious for sure but as someone who has lost many a brother to marriage they're also one of the greatest things one can do, basically it's a 75% chance that once a friend gets married you'll only see them a couple of times a year moving forward as they go down the beta rat race rabbit hole so I honestly have no issues with the mates getting around them and saying farewell and if you're from one of the socialist shitholes that most of the stag party groups are from where the fun police are out to stop it, I totally understand going to other countries that aren't like that to do it. Stag parties are also one of the few leave passes that beta married men get so it's also a chance to see all your other married mates.

To my foreign forum brothers, what are a few things I could do to improve my travel behavior so I'm not "The Ugly American"?
Don't be loud - Americans really struggle with volume control and the accent is a particularly piercing one so it's a bad combo.
Don't ask incredibly stupid questions or make incredibly stupid statements - Imagine you're at the Burj Khalifa for example, there is no need for a "wow it's really tall" type of comment.
Listen to the tour guide - This ties in with the don't ask stupid questions but when the tour guide has literally just finished telling you what the emblems on the shield represent if you listened it helps you from then asking what the emblems on the shield represent (have seen this done exclusively by Americans many times).
Don't talk over the tour guide - This kind of ties everything together but another almost exclusively American thing is the idiot (usually female) who read their Lonely Planet book and thinks they are in fact the tour guide...
Loud is certainly the main one. In the defense of American travelers, almost all that travel in 1 or 2 person groups do none of the above. Really the only young travelers that are bad are the frat packs and trust fund babies who are so loud and obnoxious/ignorant, so avoid that and you should be good. Most of the above are the realm of the annoying middle aged parents taking their entire extended families on holidays types.
