What do you guys do during "down time" when travelling?
02-29-2012, 05:18 PM
I've been having a lot of free time while waiting on travel arrangements.
So far, I've been working out a lot, meditating, and going on walks around my city.
What do you nomads do when travelling and have down time?

When not with girls I try to relax. Most girls like a lot of attention, so it can be a pleasure when not with them. I’m on my computer if the internet is descent or catching up on my reading.

I had a lot of downtime at the Mango Tree hostel in Rio a few years back. I sort of became a fixture in the hammock out front. I'd sit there with my laptop surfing facebook. The staff would just start laughing whenever they saw me laying in it, calling me an internet addict.

Same. I used to joke whenever I'd be somewhere in the world with a friend while on my laptop. I'd say does it even matter where we "are" these days when so much time is spent online?

I don't have downtime in a civilized country. Between drinking, recovering, swooping, fucking, and planning the logistics for all this my day is booked solid. It looks good on paper anyway. My bank statement says otherwise.
With that being said, my next adventures will be a bit more calm. I plan on taking some online courses to eat up part of the day. Renting apartments from here on out will give me access to a kitchen, so I can study the regional cuisine, and work on culinary game. Hopefully this will keep me straight, so I can maintain a workout program.
Another distraction will be to allot $5K to gamble in the stock market, mostly in day trading. I know this will eat up a good portion of the day.
I become a destructive machine, leaving a devastating financial path when I have too much time on my hands while traveling. I know you high energy ADHD guys know what I'm talking about.

I spend too much time online, have a walk around, sit by the pool, read a book, practice my language...but mostly just waste time online which isn't very productive.

Yeah I find it hard to get motivated when travelling too, I sleep too late, stay up all night, drink too much and party too hard so it's no wonder why. I have many big ideas and plans but I never get round to them, something always comes up or distracts me.

I actually have too many interests now.
-Working online.
-Learning Programming.
-Reading. Huge IMO. if you read 20-30mins a day you can plow through 20+ books a year. Think what a few years of that will do for your brain and understanding of whatever fields you want to master.
-Learning languages. Again, half hour a day with the right materials, and you can hit conversational ability in some languages in a few months. How sick is that? Like, a whole new culture, or set of cultures, opens up to you from just that small daily time investment.
I just FUCKING WISH I'd started these sorts of daily habits 10 years ago, in my teens... ah well, such is the clarity of hindsight. I could literally have learned 5-10 languages. And I remember my Uncle trying to encourage me to learn C++. God I'd be a fucking monster by now, with serious earning/consulting power if I'd taken it up back then.

I read a book almost every 2 days at the moment whilst I'm travelling. Back home I rarely read anything.

I'm usually out exploring. Before arriving somewhere I try to have a list of things to do and see, and fill some of the time in-between just walking around with my camera. I try to only go online late at night before bed, and that's really only to check emails.
