Here in the USA, cooking skills have a weird class inversion. It used to be people NEEDED cooking skills to survive at all as a household. Then shit got automated, frozen foods, fast food etc, plus the decline of the nuclear family as the prime lifestyle move, and people could get by without being able to cook anything. It's always been a standby joke that lots of bachelor men couldn't cook, but I'm looking at you, single urban career women.
Now, there are damn cooking channels, and upper-middle class people take high-priced classes to learn how to cook high-quality food and spend bajillions on top-notch cooking gear.
Whereas cooking used to be something every family did to get by (some of the best recipes in every culture are prole in nature - BBQ, any kind of stew, etc), now being able to cook is a UMC non-essential skill they can show off.
It's like hipsterism - people who can afford better dressing down and idolizing lo-fi bands while they live in a cheap feral gentrifying neighborhood.
