I'd consider applying for the Freedom card by Chase right now if you don't have it. You'd get 15000($150) bonus ultimate reward points for spending $500 in 3 months. Freedom has bonus quarters. For this quarter it's Amazon and Zappos. You'd get 5% rewards for up to $1500 per that quarter. So the max you get can is 7500 points. Plus right now Chase is trying to compete with Discover so they're upping it to 10% from now to Christmas.
I stocked up on Amazon gift cards through that which you can use later. The reason the points are better than cash back is that they're worth more. If you have the Sapphire Preferred or Ink+, you can transfer your points 1:1 to a number of airlines Chase has connections with. You're looking at 2.2 cents per point if you go that route. Of course, you can always redeem as cash back at 1:1 as well.
