[trip report] Rome

I spent three days in Rome, and while I did not f-close a single person, I saw the potential and would like to share my thoughts here.

General
1. If you go to Rome for sightseeing as a primary purpose - something everyone must do once - you will NOT f-close anyone unless you stay a week or longer. The reason is that there are so many things to see and enjoy that at the end of day you'll be very tired. Both physically from walking (and hot weather doesn't help) and mentally, from seeing so many things, and staying in so many lines. I didn't even approach anyone the first two days because my brain was too busy with "what else I forgot to see?". So plan accordingly; I'd suggest staying a week, and spending the first three days sightseeing, and the last four in pickups.

2. Do NOT stay in Central Rome (between Pantheon and Vatican) if your goal is not sightseeing. The hotels are expensive (starting from 100EUR a night for a crappy room), so the main population there is mostly older couples. People I talked to suggested the Traveste area which is where upper class locals live and all the clubs are, or Termini (train station) area which is where cheap hotels and hostels are (note that "cheap" here means something like $60 a night or so). Keep in mind the subway is only open till 9pm except Sat (till 1:30 on Sat), and taxis are expensive as is everything else (how you like a 3EUR Coke/water?), so if you're in the club in Traveste and want to go back to Termini, it may cost you more than the hotel room alone.

3. Know where the subway stations and major tourist attractions are - do map-memorizing before your trip. People been asking me directions all the time - just walk around confidently without a map in your hand and they'll assume you know the whole city.

4. Read some information about Rome. Surprisingly a lot of tourists do not know that Vatican museum is closed on most Sundays, and that tickets may be bought online (saving of 3-hour line). You will DHV a lot as a well-traveled confident person if you casually mention those things, even if you just read them online two days ago.

5. Forget about shopping there unless you're G [Image: smile.gif] your main problem would be to keep your money pile from melting off. To give you an idea, I spent 400EUR in three days (half of it on accommodation) and I didn't really buy anything but transport, food, drinks and entertainment. Museums alone are 5-20EUR each. Budget for water, you will NOT be able to refill your bottle as there are no drinking fountains. Well, unless you can drink from a regular fountain where the people routinely wash their feet in. Exception: Vatican has plenty of drinking fountains.

6. If you plan to go out into the clubs, pack the good clothes. Never been there, but talked to locals and they said the dress code is strictly enforced. So if you're walking around in a t-shirt, shorts and hiking boots - like every other tourist - you won't get into the most clubs. Bars/restaurants are ok. Note that if you wearing a sleeveless t-shirt or your shorts are well above knee, you won't be allowed into a lot of religious museums and pretty much all churches, including all Vatican museums.

Approaching

I only run a little of day game there, and your target would be tourists. There is A LOT of them from different countries, and you'll have a good selection. I'd say you have a chance to get any flag possible, from Ethiopia to Hong Kong. Focus on major attractions - Colosseum, Roman Forum, Piazza Navona, St. Peter square (I had most success there).

As typical with day game, focus on single girls or small groups of girls to make your life easier. For me the standard "could you take a picture" approach worked really well. Usually once the picture is taken I ask her to take one more, and watch her body expression. If she seems annoyed or in hurry, I let her go - maybe she's here only for a day and wants to see everything, very typical for Russians. If she takes another picture and doesn't hurry, I offer to take a picture of her with her camera (unless she is with the group and has it taken already in front of me). Then I ask where she is from. You may think it is not relevant (and it would not be in San Jose), but in Rome, which is full of tourists, this is a very natural and perfect transition. Once she replied, you're on your way to the normal conversation.

Now ask her if this is her first visit (100% in my case) and how long she's been staying, then ask her for her plans. Most likely they would involve seeing something you know about, so you can share some information you learned before, but not all of it. For example, you may say "Vatican museum is nice, but today is not the best day". Let her ask you what is the best day, and why. This naturally leads to your travel experience, her travel experience and so on.

At this moment you may be tempted - and she may suggest to - join her or her group. Do not. It is easy to stick with one person for the day in Rome, and at the evening she's so tired that nothing ever could happen. Ask her if she knows any good nightlife spots (she wont) and tell her it is tough because most restaurants close around 10pm or so, but you KNOW some good places (again check Google). Since you've established your knowledge before, she'll take it. Close by getting her number, tell her you'll call her later. You may arrange some plans right on spot, but it makes little sense. Say goodbye, and repeat.

If you still want to spend a little time with her - to build comfort - get in line into St. Peter Cathedral. The line looks huge and long, but it moves fast. If she is wearing a tank top and you have an extra t-shirt with you, you may get extra points when you go through all the security and she's turned away at the entrance to St. Peter. Then if you want to spend more time with her, get into the line to the basilica dome. This is a LONG line - 2-3 hours - and it is a good climb afterward (520 steps if I remember) - so you'll have a lot of opportunities to build comfort without distractions, cockblocking or anything else. Maybe even some makeout in Vatican [Image: smile.gif] Just don't get caught.
