It's fiction but you definitely find yourself learning as you read these books, Child drops a lot of info on the various systems and equipment Reacher uses and comes across on his missions.
As well as detailed geographical descriptions of whatever country and town/city Reacher finds himself in.
Sure there's a certain pulp quality to it, it's not high art by any means but then it doesn't have it be.

Yes, I think I have read every Reacher novel so far. And I share your interest in his powers of observation involving physical threats.
For someone who enjoys Childs' Jack Reacher I also recommend a more international version: The John Rain novels by Barry Eisler. The first books are the best.
