I don't agree with the 'this is all his fault' sentiment. You have no idea how much a persons upbringing can fuck up their brain. That kind of vicious, psychologically brutal upbringing causes all kinds of secondary damage. His father would wake him up at 3am to beat him when he was a child, and then walk away smiling like he did something good? Jesus Christ.
Everyone loves to be righteous and blame the individual for not taking control of himself. But mental development simply doesn't work like that. If your brain grew under the environment of 'you are a piece of shit', you're really at a disadvantage. Most people can't just reprogram themselves automatically. They need more forceful, psychological restructuring, delivered by other people, to try and correct their minds.
It's one thing for someone to be lazy, or unassertive etc, and then to 'man up' and get into a more active mentality. But it's another thing for someone who's mind has been brutalized from birth, to unwind all that damage.
